I didn't really have a problem with wikileaks until they went and did this shit. How does that help anyone?

I was under the impression that Wikileaks isn't trying to help anyone, per se. They just put out information. That is information. They put it out.smartalco wrote:I didn't really have a problem with wikileaks until they went and did this shit. How does that help anyone?

See your sig.peking wrote:After some deliberation, I've come up with two reasons to support Wikileaks—the second one is the most important in terms of defending the practical effects of the release of classified information.
Wikileaks merely distributes the information; if anyone is going to be charged with a criminal act, it should be whoever originally obtained the classified information and gave it to Wikileaks. Wikileaks is merely a publisher, just as the newspapers are, and to criminalise this would be to set a terrible precedent that would essentially kill serious journalism.
Furthermore, if this information has ended up on Wikileaks, it is probably relatively easy to access. That is to say, if there was someone with access who was prepared to take the personal risk to release this information to Wikileaks, there are most likely others with access who would give away this information after being bribed or threatened or if they were motivated by a radical ideology. It is thoroughly possible that terrorists and other nefarious figures already have this information. By bringing it to wider public scrutiny, Wikileaks could well be making things safer by removing the illusion of security through obscurity and bringing potential vulnerabilities and issues (as well as, you know, the truth) to light.

Is this verifiable? Because to me it smells a lot like propaganda. The whole article had a mud slinging air to it.Smartalco's article wrote:While Mr. Assange is already evading detainment on Swedish rape charges in Iceland

The rape charge is, indeed, something similar being overblown. Is this a brilliant move on Assange's part to get the Wikileaks leak itself out of the limelight, or was he just horny for Swedes?

Yeah, so sliding backwards a little bit here in the discussion, but really? Do you realise what you just said?g-knobe wrote:EDIT: It's a good damn thing Assange raped someone, else the warrant might never have been issued. At least he'll be tried for something. You just acknowledged that in the eyes of the law no crime had been committed, so it's good that something unrelated had happened so that he could come to some presumed justice for his not-illegal-acts. You flagrantly just supported peversion of the law, and dubious acts that are not out of place in a 90's cop film.
"Look, we're sure he's a dealer, so let's just plant the evidence and work from there."
I am stunned, because that seems to be quite an abomination of logic, right there.

Also, I just saw this:

Yes, I did. You are taking me too seriously in this particular case, seeing as I really, really doubt he actually raped whoever they said he did.squibbles wrote:Yeah, so sliding backwards a little bit here in the discussion, but really? Actually, I think that he is taking you exactly right, bro. If you don't think he raped the girl, then you are hoping that he gets arrested for something he didn't do so that he can be silenced.g-knobe wrote:Yes, I did.
