I went to a tourney today. :D

I only used Snake and won one round against a Jigglypuff easily. The I lost against someones ROB and someone elses Diddy. The Diddy was freaking rape! I almost got 3 stocked but managed to get a quick kill with up tilit before I died. Im also thinking of picking up Lucario

I've just started to play online games recently, and i gotta say it is much funner than bashing around comps, even if the connection is occasionally laggy. So if anyone wants to have a Brawl with me, give me a PM or better yet, talk to me on IRC, and i'll gladly WIPE THE FLOOR WITH YOU GRRRRRRR arrange a nice friendly match. :D

And just a heads up, I play with either Iceclimbers or Kirby. Ganondorf is far to slow as it is, and lag effectively makes him about as useless as a solid gold t-shirt.

Nah, I live to far away to make going to tournies worth it, and I have no idea how to find them anyway. But I am going to uni this year, so maybe i'll find some Smash-enthusiasts that way.

Looking forward to brawling you guys, asap :D

australian tournaments are small and infrequent (sydney anyway). Unless you want to go for long drives at inconvenient times for a lukewarm experience, just get some friends together. Last time I went to Nintendo Connection Tour 08 (ages ago), with all stages and items on. it was crowded with noobs, single elimination and basically incredibly bad.

I would love to play you online (being australian and all), but I've nevery been able to get smash to connect to my router. And lag makes slow characters better in general because the usefulness of fast attacks is reduced by the delay of the latency

I've found that it doesn't lag too much in a two or three man brawl, but with four players, be they all players or one or two computers, lags like a bitch. And its really annoying since comps are sometimes added if there are extra slots, but not others.

spudz: I live in rural vic, about 40min out of Melbourne. So this looks like the best one for me: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=210245

that looks a lot better than the Sydney stuff. However, read the note
Ice Climbers chain throw is banned past 5 grabs, any more should be reported to myself or X and a warning will be given, 2nd time will result in a disqualified set.
That may be a deal-breaker for an IC player...

As for online, maybe I'll be able to play you if I can be bothered to lug my TV downstairs, I can probably connect it directly to my modem (I'll need some hardware though). Coms shouldn't be a problem because if using friend codes, you can set it up as you like right?

Yeah, I saw that, but its not gonna be a problem at this point because I can't do chainthrows. Maybe after I get better that will be a problem, but I'm not the kind of person who would infinite grab someone anyway.

As for the comms thing, i believe you can customise that, yes.

Iceclimbers chaingrabs are so hard to learn and do, especially since the timing is different for almost all chracters. The only one I can do is the single popo chaingrab on fast fallers and occasionally the down throw into nana's spike. Your tournament has some strange rules, like the stages that are banned for just DeDeDe.

Also when we do our online matches I demand no items and none of the banned stages.

My net connection for the Wii is wireless, so that makes it a bit laggier than a hardline. Also, when i first played it, i had the console at the opposite end of the house from the router. Now its a few metres away and works far better, apart from the aforementioned lagginess with four player controlled characters.

spudz: At the moment, the only chaingrab i can do is the standard Popo F-Throw -> Nana Grab, and not with any regularity. However I'm quite adept at the Popo F-Throw -> Nana F-Air, to the point that i can regular smash people of the bottom of the screen. I figure if i change to the Gamecube controller it will be easier to do chaingrabs, but i just really like the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo.

And with regards to items, I'm all with you on the no items thing, but i disagree with the all stages unlocked thing. Some stages are just no fun to play on for me eg: 75M, Rubble Falls. If someone else wants to use items, we need to compromise and do say, every second match with item on or something, because its unfair if they have to do it your way because you are being stubborn.

Hmm, so we already have some conflict on level choices. The best thing to do, imo, would be to each sort the levels into ones we like and ones we don't like. Hopefully that way we can create a core group of levels that everyone is happy to play on.

Stage Preferences
Levels marked with a 'o' are Melee levels.

my method: popo backthrow, nana f-throw, popo backthrow etc.fix errors with a popo f-throw. I'm not 100% though, I sometimes make mistakes.

The reason I do this is because the timing for a popo backthrow is basically just pressing back then z almost as fast as I can, with less variation between characters. And after you do this, popo is in a position behind nana, so when you fthrow it results in popo walking a bit forwards to grab from a less strict-timing position. (actually, if you can get the right position you can quickly backthrow alt back and forth, but they can often break out before you get in position. It's what the pros do though.) Also, including backthrow means you don't have to change timing when you reach the edge, you just sort of get in rhythm. The downthrow is of course not infinite, but it's a less risky way to rack up damage at low percents and the fair spike is effective against those characters with bad recovery. I usually charge in grab for an upsmash though.

I don't play with items, and I basically just don't play those who want items: I won't force it on anyone, I 'll accept if they don't want to play by my standards and just find someone else. Fair?

as for stages, I've always had the belief that the interest and variety in smash comes from the characters and players, and the stage is just a backdrop for this. I think stages shouldn't really interfere at all except in regular ways that actually change playing strategies rather than just giving one player a free kill every once in a while. There is also the problem that some stages encourage repetitive or shallow strategies: like stalling in hyrule or turtles in the mario bros stage. I will grudgingly accept stages like pictochat and wario ware, but some stages I absolutely refuse to play, like new pork or 75m.

Smashboards actually has a standard already, but I'm ok making our own..

here's the beginnings of a list, with some stages I don't think anyone will argue with
Battlefield
Final Destination
Smashville
Yoshi's Island
Castle Siege
Lylat Cruise
Pokémon Stadium 1
Luigi's Mansion

EDIT: condog's list:
walk off edges are fundamentally flawed because
1: chaingrabbers can walk off with them
2: people on high percents have reason to camp at the extreme edges because at the edges, percent doesn't matter, any hit will kill. If the other player wants to actually fight, he has to follow, and the ensuing "battle" is very short and annoyingly random

stages with walls also pose a problem because a good percentage of characters have infinites or effective infinites (high enough % for a guaranteed kill), which, while it doesn't ruin the game, it makes it a lot more boring in the fairly common eventuality that a player slips up near a wall.

So reconsider shadow moses and eldin please?

you're missing some stages, spudz, notably eldin

If you give me the opportunity, I'll play "cheap". if I'm dedede on circuit and I grabbed you, I'm not going to purposely release you out of honour, I'll chain you to the edge and kill you. Doing otherwise is so artificial. (that said, I don't mind the stage, it just gives chaingrabbers an advantage.)

I will also have no reservations about racking up 200% with metaknight jab against the wing of corneria then dsmash for quick kill. This doesn't show I have no honour, it shows that the stage should be banned for allowing that strategy at all.
