I'm very glad I saw this topic, it's very helpful.

Though they are arbitrary and most people don't really care what rating they have on their maps (to a degree), I feel like it's hard to argue against the fact that when people see a map that's rated well, they are drawn toward it. It's a basic psychological principle in action: when something is popular, more people want to see it.
This is true, I find myself playing maps that are rated or are one or two votes away from a rating more often than maps that need 5 votes. Or if they're by authors that I know are good. So I guess what I'm saying is that rates are important and so is the author: if you've made a name for yourself then more people are likely to play/rate your maps.
For example, if I see a map by Palemoon with no votes yet, I usually play it regardless of what it looks like because I'm assuming the quality will be high (the same with many other authors).

I disagree. That will only give you an N Art reputation. Though perhaps it will get your name known.
l_d is right, jut look at schaaaf. After his tidal wave map, he got a reputation for being a good tileset artist. Now if he makes a normal map it won't get rated, but most of his tileset arts do.

Anyway, thanks for writing the article l_d I'll try and use some of the ideas you stated here to raise my profile a bit.

Here's a twist, ways to get your maps ignored.

-Childish behavior in general. No one likes faggotry.
-Having bad maps. Simple as that, put your soul into them. I promise someone will pay attention. If not, PM me, I'm always up for a good review =)
-Re-submitting. Have faith in the system. If it's ignored, try harder next time.
-Not getting involved in the community. I think once we know you on a personal level, we'd be more willing to play your maps.
-Spamming. Most of us know not to feed the trolls.

Any others would be appreciated =D

I been thinking. Wouldn't it solve almost all problems by lowering the number of ratings required for ranking from five to three?

That actually brings up a really good question - is the minimum number of ratings for a map to be rated even *relevant* anymore? Should we even have a minimum? It was implemented as a counter to maps with 1 vote of 5 being top-rated, but we don't give a shit about that anymore.

This is what I've been thinking. Well having a single friend would mean that your map would quickly get into the "Five" maps section, it would leave almost as quickly if it wasn't genuinely a good map. If we make it three friends, we avoid the mapspam (same backwards and forwards - FUCKING AWESOME.) and still get more good maps played. At five, it's unreasonable to find the map if you aren't on the IRC, and even more difficult to find five people on the IRC who are willing to play and rate a map.

Wow - this topic is great - yet I'm still not following the rules to get my maps noticed. (I have read this thrice, you know)
Names of Towns

Longest: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
Shortest: Y

OMG THIS IS COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (not)

Great advice. I am one of those guys who usually doesn't care about aesthetics, but now I will :)
