Hey Macro, I think you should reorganise the Original Post's categories of players. 5 categories of people who played and already at Great Grandfolk seems like a short term way to go.
Generic Numbers seems a bit boring, I don't have any great suggestions though. Pack of cards maybe? Military Ranks?

Now that Christmas is over, the new year has begun and a decent number of players has submitted runs for the previous map I think it's about time to announce the next one:

179890
"OUTER DX 02-3: If you're small and on a search" by DW40
Suggested by Aidiera. :)

I expect some really interesting routes and lots of thwump tricks here. Good luck!

Good point, shomman. I guess that a native English speaker could come up with much more original titles for the categories than me but of course suggestions by anyone are welcome.

Good map this week. Did a quick speedrun.
Also, here's a proposed system. I haven't designated corresponding Total score amounts, I can do that in a couple days Edited to include proposed score milestones that would get you these ranks:

Emperor - Cumulative score over 7500
King - Cumulative score over 7000
Archduke - Cumulative score over 6500
Grand Duke - Cumulative score over 6000
Grand Prince - Cumulative score over 5500
Prince - Cumulative score over 5000
Duke - Cumulative score over 4500
Marquis - Cumulative score over 4000
Earl - Cumulative score over 3500
Count - Cumulative score over 3000
Viscount - Cumulative score over 2500
Baron - Cumulative score over 2000
Knight - Cumulative score over 1500
Esquire - Cumulative score over 1000
Gentlemen - Cumulative score over 500
Peasant - Cumulative score over 100
Stowaways - People who participated in the contest without knowing it

Let me know what you think.
I think it's big, and future proof enough :)
Also, perhaps don't add them all to the first post, because it'll take up a lot of space. Maybe you could, in a spoiler, but otherwise maybe just one or two above the current highest.

I think the problem is that scores vary too much with each map. That means that if you miss a single map it's already very hard to catch up unless there're tons of maps available. And the ranges are so wide that, as long as you play all maps, you'll be in the top one already, without a need to polish your runs. If the ranges were smaller this would be solved but on the other hand it would then have the consequence that they would be pretty short, i.e., players would be there for a week and then skip to the next one, or maybe even skip a whole rank.

Right now (500 seconds) it only lasts 2-4 maps depending on the scores, which already seems quite short to me, as this "rank" thing is something that I'd ideally expect to last tons of weeks until you finally get promoted, and so it would really be an achievement to be satisfied with, and truly a neverending contest. This can't be done I think, because the difference between a 0th run and a poor run is very little (a matter of a few seconds maybe) compared to the huge difference between playing or not playing a map (usually over 100 seconds, even 200), which encourages quantity over quality.

I'm not complaining just making an observation regarding the ranking system :P I like shom's suggestion on defining tons of ranks for a long time.

I thought about that too and I came up with the following idea: The ratio between your total score and the highest one in the competition defines in which category you find yourself. Categories could be:
0% to 49%,
50% to 79%,
80% to 89%,
90% to 94%,
95% to 98%
99% to 100% of the highest cumulative score in the competition.
(The players' percentages are rounded up or down depending on the first decimal place.)

Like that you can get into good categories even if you have missed one or two maps but if you aim for the best category you really need to make an effort and submit good runs.
However, I see two problems:
1.) It's possible for a player to drop to a lower category which wouldn't go well with the original "Climb" idea.
2.) The higher the total scores rise the more insignificant it becomes if your runs are good and you could get into a good category just by submitting mediocre runs on all the maps.

I hope the idea and the problems became clear. After all, it was just an idea that came into my mind. Discuss.

@shomman: I like that! If we stick to the original system I'll accept your suggestions. :)

That's quite a clever idea macro. In regards to your points,
1) I don't think this is too bad a problem. People still climb :)
2) This seems to undermine it a little bit.

@Eddy, I see your point. I guess part of the main achievement would be getting those ranks earliest as well.

I'm struggling to think of any better options. I don't know which I prefer. Macro's might be a little confusing, I don't know. The original was simpler.
