I'll be asleep for the first few hours, but hopefully I'll get a chance to check out how you're going at some point.

Wait, I'm actually GMT+3 right now, so the starting time would be 6pm GMT. Damn summer time :P
Oh well, I'll start somewhere between those hours.

Alright guys this started, make sure to come by!

The run has been finished with a time of 5 hours, 9 minutes and 12 seconds! I'm pretty happy with that considering I hadn't practiced most columns at all. If you were a god you could probably do it in 4 hours, but I'm only pretty ok at video games. I'll try and get this thing on Youtube in higher quality in a few days' time, but for now you can see it here, here and here. (internet went out twice so it's in a few pieces)

That was a lot of fun. What a good send-off before you leave us for 6 months. Maybe you will decide to try and beat your time a little bit after you return, once you shake the rust off.

This made me want to attempt a speedrun through the whole game too. :D

Yeah it was very enjoyable, nice job :D

Thanks for the compliments! Here's the run on Youtube with some downtime edited out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qzpng9vQWoM
(just realized there was some more downtime I forgot about, not a big deal though)

It's my last day of freedom today, so you won't be seeing me much from now on. I'll check the forums occasionally and be on irc on some weekends, but I probably won't be playing much N in the next six months. I will get back to playing more as soon as I'm done with my service.

While I'm here I would also like to say that I still intend to finish making the Best of N video I was talking about some months back. I originally wanted to have it done before I leave but I was lazy and just kind of didn't ever do anything. Sorry about that.

Hey guys, it's me and I did a thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkPWEqRg-Fc
That's a column 00 run in 17:46. So the WR is now mine and mine alone :D
I'm gonna keep doing runs whenever I'm at home, I'm playing really well right now (getting good runs very often) and I believe I can get 17:30 pretty soon.

Nice run man, and congrats! Perfect ending phrase :)

You bitch xD 9-1 kills this column for me, but I might give it some more tries in the future, according to some old calculations of mine, just avoiding big mistakes (deaths) and maintaining the cleanliness level should grant 17:15.

There's not much that can be done with the cleanliness without risking too much, maybe grabbing some 5 extra seconds.

Mibem what's your strategy when column speedrunning, do you reset very often? I barely had any completion at all because as soon as I could see the run over 18 mins I'd reset, but maybe that's not the proper strategy to practice.

I generally reset if I fall more than 10 seconds behind PB early on, but if I get past episode 5 without falling behind I tend to keep going to the end for practice unless something catastrophic happens (like a death near the end of a long level). I agree that 9-1 makes this a really annoying run, although the 9-3 laser tends to kill me even more often. Despite this I fully intend to keep running this until I get sub-17:30, after that I think I'll be done for good.

Nice work. I'll take a look at this soon.

By the way, I'd really like to see Eddy and MiBeM duke it out for a live Twitch run of column 00. Multitwitch facilitates spectators to easily watch both players simultaneously. Thoughts?

I'm willing to do a race with anyone who wants to do such a thing with me. I'll be available for all of next week (long holiday hype \o/), after that I won't have much time until June. I'll also be streaming speedruns of a few different games (mostly Wings of Vi and N) almost every day this week either way, race or not.

Phew, that'd be a lot of pressure after so long without practising. I'd like to warm up first, but that's gonna have to wait till the summer I'm afraid, when classes finish.

Yeah, definitely warm yourself up, Eddy.

I watched the video in 2x speed to save time; it also had the serendipitous effect of smoothing out the frame rate, which was quite poor. (And yes, I put the volume back up to hear you tell Eddy to suck it.)

Recording in 30fps makes the already suboptimal framerate of N look even worse for whatever reason. Sorry about that, 60fps might make a difference but I'd rather not because it takes up so much space when you record whole streams (up to 5 hours of footage every time). I also won't update Nreality to the better performing v7.2 because it somehow makes the 3-0 exit switch skip a lot harder.

Wait what? That's really bizarre, I'm still using v6g2 as well but I didn't know that, I'll try this out. The physics shouldn't have changed.

I was convinced that this was the case back when I was testing v7.2, I had a really hard time getting the skip while I could get it easily on v6g2. Testing it again now, I'm not quite sure anymore, it feels easier than it did then but I'm still not getting it quite as often as on v6g2. Maybe it's not real at all, maybe the different framerate affects my timing somehow, maybe collision detection / physics calculations are actually getting called more often (unlikely)? I have no idea.

Do you know what I think would be interesting? Allowing people to use overclock mode to get faster times. Perhaps an "overclock-permissible 00 run" where you can crank up the game speed to whatever speed you like, and your run is timed in the same way as normal. Of course, the faster you set it to, the harder it is to control the ninja.

Thoughts, anyone?

That's a cool idea, maybe I'll try it some time. Interesting risk-for-reward factor, would take a lot of practice to get good at though.

Salty 17:24
Got the sub-17:30 I was going for but I'm still not very happy with it, I think I'll keep going for 17:15 for the rest of the week. If I don't get it in that time I'm probably done.

Got a 22:20 column 00. Really bad run but a pb is a pb. Want to get a sub 20. Also, can somebody make me a moderator of speedrun.com/n ??

Nice! Verified your run on speedrun.com. If you want mod rights you'll need to ask one of the super mods, I got mine from Yeti (asked him on twitter).
