Whenever I try to start up N, it immediately freezes and stops responding. The window is always stuck where it first loads, but nothing happens beyond that.

Could somebody please either...
1) Tell me how to fix this problem, or
2) Tell me where I can just play an in-browser version of 1.4?

2) Heh, doesn't exist.

1) Try one of the following:
The first one is the one that worked for the one other dude who posted about Windows 7 issues. Failing that, I'd try the other two.

I've tried all three. They don't work.

Huh. What Flash player are you on?

Alternatively, try downloading Nreality, which is exactly the same as N plus some extra stuff that you're free not to use. I wonder if that has the same problem.

10. Although it still plays in 7.

I tried Nreality, but it didn't work either. It just won't load.

Do you have any anti-virus running in the background? It's unlikely but possible one of them is messing with it.

Hmm... For some reason, it just fixed itself. I didn't even do anything to it.

Okaaaay...Nevermind! ^^;

After reading through various similar problems I still couldn't get to a solution to my laggy problem.
Having one thing said: It's not lagging insanely. It just disturbes gameplay that much, that normal gameplay is impossible.
I already tried running NReality in any Compatibility Mode, I also read about the sound problem of Vista - it won't work for my Windows 7. Having a quite fast and new computer I assume that the lag doesn't appear because of system overload, since additionally NReality is the only program running. I also tried to reduce the graphics to the medium level without success.
Maybe it's because I have Windows 7 64-bit, but my knowedge about computers isn't that big to surely say that's the problem.
So, any ideas on what to do get the ninja runnning fluently again?

I'm having this same issue on my new laptop:

Core i3 350M
4GB DDR-1066
ATI Mobility 5145 w/ 512mb RAM
500GB 5400RPM HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I never had lag on my old laptop (a four year old Thinkpad T60), so I doubt that the hardware isn't powerful enough. The lag mostly seems to happen when a new sound is played (when I jump, collect gold, etc). I tried the Vista fix, as well as running it in XP compatibility mode and nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Doing these worked for me:

Also I always play N with sound off, don't know if that has any effect though.

I tried those settings, and also tried disabling the sound, but it still lags.

Anyone have a fix for this?

The other settings worked for me, dunno what else you could do. Except the rather extreme measure of running N in 256 colours.

Goddamn windows key ...

Anyway, I just ran NReality6d4 with no compatibility and fresh .sol and it lagged. Oh, it lagged. So, I turned off sound. Still lagged. Then I set the following compatibility settings and it stopped lagging!
  • Windows Vista (service Pack 2)
  • Disable Visual Themes
  • Disable Desktop Composition
  • Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
  • Run this program as an administrator
Try 'em. They may help out. I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise on my school laptop.

Well, I downloaded NReality6d4 and played using those settings, and it got rid of the lag. But I hate playing without sound. It's a shame this game isn't really supported by the developer any more. Thanks for the help.

AFAIK, they still are supporting it ... did something change a while back?

I don't know, maybe they are, but considering how long Windows 7 has been out, and considering this seems to be a fairly common problem, I thought they would've released an update or posted a fix for it.

They've been jumping from project to project but haven't released anything in about six years, yeah. Right now they've decided to put all their time into the next version of N (which hasn't been the case for a long time) so things might get better for you soon.

Also you'll find that most N players quit playing with sound a while ago so probably weren't aware of the Win7 issue (myself included).
