Really cool song some kids at my high school made. 1.5 million views according to the search and counting. They definitely deserve the attention, it's great that such good music is finally getting into the mainstream.

Anybody got any really good indie-rock? With an awesome vocalist? Looking for something new to jam to...

I so recommend this for anyone that likes chill stuff. So good.

Excuse the fanciness; when I thought about the relative lack of activity on the forums, I decided to go into more detail so I had something to post on my blag. But while we're talking about it, yeah, I did just raise the bar for quality, bitches.


INFINITY SHRED EP 001 (Gnar Dream)
This month saw the release of a new EP from Infinity Shred (who were formerly known as Starscream before legal action from a similarly-named but far less awesome band), and along with the new name comes a new sound, of sorts. The style is roughly the same—progressive electronic post-rock—but there's now more warmth and varied synth texture and less 8-bit, and while I'm a big fan of Starscream / Infinity Shred's earlier chipmusic-based sound, I'll admit that this is not a change for the worse. This is a very nice EP, and what’s more, it’s available for a very nice price. In fact, you can download their whole discography there (minus the early releases they pretend don’t exist) for just $15.50. Don’t think, just do it.


BEASTIE BOYS Paul’s Boutique
As a casual appreciator of the Beastie Boys, I have for years been meaning to give their magnum opus, Paul’s Boutique, the attention it deserved. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until I heard the tragic news of MCA’s death that I was spurred to action. For the last few weeks since then, I’ve been spinning* this album fairly heavily, and and as the rest of the world is already well aware, it is good. Though its reputation owes much to the extent and inventiveness of its sampling, it is clear to a listener like me, who was born after its release and can only recognise the most obvious of the samples, that Paul’s Boutique is firmly a work of art in its own right.

* Metaphorically, though I wish I was listening to it on vinyl because it is clearly that kind of album.


MEW A Triumph for Man
I’ve been quite fond of a few tracks on this album for a while, but I gave it a few more full plays through this month. I don’t think my opinion of it has changed much; it still pales in comparison to any of Mew’s later albums, but it does have a few great songs like Wherever and its perfect shoegaze / dream pop chorus (“cannot sleep, open your eyes / look outside, tell your goodbyes”), Panda and its beautiful melody (and fairly uninterpretable lyrics), and the perfect pop song that is No Shadow Kick (with literally uninterpretable lyrics; they’re faux-Cantonese nonsense).


モーニング娘。 4th 「いきまっしょい!」
4th Ikimasshoi! doesn’t include any of my absolute favourite Morning Musume singles, nor does it include my absolute favourite generation of members (6th). Yet, as I decided this month, it’s my favourite Morning Musume album. For an album that’s so long (just over an hour), its consistent quality is remarkable, and yet this doesn’t come at the expense of variety. While all broadly within the J-pop idiom, the style of the music ranges from rock and funk to swing, the requisite weird Eurobeat-ish track, and early-2000s contemporary R&B (though to be honest I could do without that last one). And the production’s perfect. Featuring what was then Japan’s biggest pop group at the peak of their power and popularity (or slightly after the peak, perhaps), 4th Ikimasshoi! is something of a must-have, regardless of whether you’re a fan of J-pop.


椎名林檎 三文ゴシップ
It was also in this month that I first paid significant attention to Sanmon Gossip, perhaps the least popular of Shiina Ringo’s solo albums. Certainly, it’s her jazziest solo effort, and though I’m fond of jazz, jazz pop is far removed from my own tastes (namely bebop, hard bop, and post-bop). Yet, I found a lot to like about this album. There are perhaps a few songs that are merely average, but the same can be said for her previous album, Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana, which is nevertheless near-universally acclaimed—the only difference is that on that album, they’re disguised under more inventive arrangements. Though I'd agree that KZK is a bit better, that's largely because of a couple of stand-out songs that outclass anything to be found here—not because Sanmon Gossip is somehow lacking the brilliance and diversity of Shiina's earlier work. That brilliance and diversity can still be found in abundance. Consider the ridiculous (and awesome) ’70s fusion of Mittei Monogatari (featuring wah guitar, funk basslines, flute, sax, and a fucking vibes solo), or the solo accordion accompaniment of Bonsai Hada, or the twisted electronic rock of Togatta Teguchi, or the largely a cappella version of Marunouchi Sadistic, or the classic rock and roll of Yokyō, or the straight-up jazz of Karisome Otome (performed with a legit band, Soil & “Pimp” Sessions)... yes, there’s a lot to like about this album.

The only good reviews are one line ones. When I'm reading a review the only thing I want to know is what it is and if it is good, not the description of all the feelings the reviewer felt while listening to it.

Anyway, it's something I accept it may be enjoyable to some people.

Sounds like a dude with a lot of muscles on his mouth and lungs that when he got his first sax, proceeded to record his very first sounds and somehow managed to sell it to people. Every single fucking time some sounds were starting to make sense, he proceeded to ruin it in the most horrible way. But somehow I think this is better than Oxygen Destroyer. Maybe because at least it's different.
