The High Country by Richmond Fontaine (via gloomp)

gloomp gave me this album to "shatter [my] misconceptions about country music," and well, mission accomplished. This is easily the darkest country I've ever heard, and has some elements of hard rock on songs like Angus King Tries to Leave the House. The album also seems to be very lyrically oriented, which means that it's pretty good that I still liked it given my terrible listening comprehension with words. For now, I'm going to hesitate to call this anything more than fairly good, but this could easily grow into something even better. Good stuff.

Wide Angle by Hybrid [via xwd]

First of all I love Hybrid’s logo. “Hybrid” might not be the most unique name, but the way it’s stylized makes it look awesome. But I’m not that impressed by the album itself. It’s like every deadmau5 album ever: meant to be listened to in full but droning and repetitive enough that it’s not worth it. (Sorry to pick on you, Joel. You’re good at what you do.) There were a mix of female vocals, male vocals and French lyrics. Theme From Wide Angle even had a little Carlos Santana flair going on. The intro and closing tracks were orchestral and sweeping, but that’s about it. Pretty much all the tracks were identical to me and very few things stood out. It’s not the type of music you can dance to, it’s not the type of music you can sing to, and it’s not even the type of music you can multitask to. (Maybe it’s the type of music you can listen to on a train while you judge those around you.)

It’s not bad at all, but it’s really just not my type of music. Everything sounds the same and there’s nothing memorable except Theme and the orchestral pieces.

Parade by Prince and the Revolution [via TommyWiseau]

So I kind of have this weird love/hate relationship with the 80's. On one hand, I think robots are totally awesome, and everyone wanted to be a robot in the 80's, what with all the electro and techno and synthpop. Plus it's the decade that gave us acid, so I can't totally hate it. On the other hand, it's when people figured out how to use digital mastering, and it took them a while to iron out the kinks and make everything sound not tinny and trashy.

This album... well, I like the idea of 80's synth-funk, I guess. And quite a bit of this sounds decent. But what really gets me is the production. The drums have way too much reverb and echo on them compared to everything else. Way too wet. I generally prefer my drums to be dry, nice and crisp with a good punch to them. They just generally feel way too weak, like they're in the next room down the hallway or something. And the mixing is a bit suspicious sometimes. It sounds like a trainwreck in a couple of places.

Still, there are moments where I get over the production quality or it kind of clicks. I kind of liked Girls & Boys, Kiss, and ANOTHERLOVERHOLENYOHEAD. The parts without the obnoxious drums were good, like Venus de Milo or Do U Lie? or Sometimes It Snows in April. There's generally a good vibe throughout the rest of the album, too, if I can get myself to focus on it instead of the echoing trashy drums. Lots of weird sounds and nice grooves.

Also I'm like 90% sure every song is about sex. Let's get funky.

"Büyük Düşler" by Mor ve Ötesi [via ortsz]

I don't know Turkish (add that one to languages I want to learn but will prolly never have time to do so) so all of the songs here ... I can't understand a single lyric (I've looked up translations though! I did my homework). With that said, there are a good amount of great songs here. I really loved Kördüğüm, which had a very sad feel to it, but it sounded very pleasing (the translations didn't help much, sadly). Şirket, Kış Geliyor, Saklama, Çocuklar ve Hayvanlar, and Büyük Düşler are all really good songs as well, with the title song a great ending to the entire album. Overall, this is a solid album. Arbitrary rating: 9/10

Big Black - Atomizer [via gloomp]

This album lives in between two genres I have conflicting feelings about - punk, which I certainly respect but never have really come to appreciate, and noise rock, which I enjoy but have never really loved. Atomizer, however, was a great way for me to settle into both genres. There's subtle melodic elements to the band's aesthetic, allowing them to stay true to both genres while not delving into the thrashing wankery that could have easily occurred. It really changed my perspective on 70's-80's punk, which I originally felt was just full of angsty whiny people with little musical talent and album names/covers like Big Black's follow-up, "Songs About Fucking". Not to say that each song is a sublime masterpiece - truth be told, only two songs, the back-to-back "Kerosene" and "Bad Houses", are sublime masterpieces - and most of the songs, including the aforementioned, have typical punky lyrical themes. But each song was at least interesting, usually standing out among the rest for one reason or another, which is respectable considering the limitations of both punk and noise rock. Big Black is a mature band, willing to experiment with their music but not for the sake of experimentation, and it shows with elements like the occasional string instrument, or the influence of other genres (like the dark wave bent on "Bad Houses"). Hearing a mature band is surprisingly rare, and it made for an exciting listen.

Real Estate - Days [via Aidiera]

This is a pleasantly languid album. There's a lot of late-eighties alternative in it. Snappy drums anchor blurry harmonies and jangling guitars, while vocals drift through the air like a late-summer breeze. "Days" perhaps lacks some spark, but I can certainly see myself giving it a few more spins, especially on days like today where it finds itself a nice fit with the weather and my mood. Altogether a solid album. No homo.

Watain - Lawless Darkness [via mediate]

Another album of clean, professional black metal. Feh. I appreciate this stuff, but I'm not sure I really like it. The problem is how monochrome it comes off, another big grey expanse of "emotional" that inspires no feeling in me. I don't mean to be too harsh, it's an okay album, one of the better of this sort probably, with the last track actually fairly interesting, but I just feel so little about it. I don't mind music that doesn't move me emotionally, but only if it seems like it's trying to do something beside that, and this definitely doesn't. Yawn. Next.

I fucked up with R18 swaps, sorry. This next round is just gonna be the leftovers and then I think we'll try a new approach which isn't round-based.

Super Gravity by Super Gravity [via oh hai Johnny]

I wasn't really looking forward to this album too much. I don't know what it was, I just couldn't manage to get my enthusiasm up for it, and then there's all this other stuff I've been distracted with, and now I'm finally getting around to it. I mean, I've listened to it, it just didn't make much of an impression on me. It's probably because I'm listening to this on some really crappy headphones, since I've been too busy to get my good headphones repaired.

Anyway, I'm not much of an expert on indie rock, but I'm kind of trying to expand my knowledge about it. So here we go, some kind of garage rock band. They've got plenty of things going for them, like their high level of energy and the occasional catchy riff, but I'm not really sold on the vocals. I guess the mixing is okay, since I can hear everything in there and nothing really stands out too badly. Obviously it kind of sounds like they're in a garage or dive bar somewhere, with a bit of reverb and distortion on everything, but that's part of the desired effect. Same with the amusing use of effect pedals. They don't want this stuff to be too clean, otherwise it wouldn't get you out of your seat.

The songs themselves are okay. I'm down with the occasional "wail on stuff as hard as you can" situations as long as you're trying to actually play music and not make as many different sounds as fast as possible. The solos kind of push the border at times, though. It's still cool hearing extended drum fills in the background of guitar solos like towards the end of Freeze Frame, so I'm okay with it. Really, that's how I feel about most of this album. It doesn't really do a whole lot for me. I know I'm probably supposed to get out of my seat during it, but it's not quite driving and energetic enough for me. Drummer's pretty good, though. Some interesting fills all over the place.

I think my favorite track was Makeup-Breakup, since it was kind of fast and had some different guitar sounds. Majesty was nice too. Really, if you're looking for some blazing guitar solos over garage rock, this'll work.
