Looking for a Verizon/Ntelos compatible QWERTY phone.

I'm supposedly getting a phone soon and my parents have asked me what I want. What I would like is a durable phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard (typing on a touchpad is ://). An example of something I want is the "Sidekick Slide". Price shouldn't be a problem; we're due for another contract so the phone will be discounted. However, I can't get a phone with a mandatory data package (~$70 a month), just something to text and talk on.
Any suggestions?

I'd go with the waejrasdcfsmdaf. I have the older model of it, but mine has gone through the wash twice with minimal damage. I also like the way it looks, and the keyboard is just lovely.
Oh, wait, nevermind, I think it has a mandatory data plan.

Don't get a dumbphone. Get a smartphone.
I'm not on Verizon, I'm on AT&T, but I have an LG Xenon. It's a slider with a physical QWERTY keyboard. The problem is that it isn't durable. It's like a toy. I regret getting it, it's slow, and most LG dumbphones run the same OS structure. The upper part of the phone is kinda getting shaky from excessive sliding (and I'm not a hardcore slider either).
The best phone I see on Verizon is the Droid, but I believe it requires a data plan. So I'm outta ideas. Just thought I'd let you know LG is kinda low quality from my experience.

I totally agree with Techno on the Droid, but since you can't get the data package then that's out.
I highly recommend anything Samsung, although they did let me down with the impression. So the two that I would recommend are the Samsung Saga or the Samsung Rogue. Both seem very good for dumphones.

It seems to me that the only way this phone is going to be usable is for it to get literally 10× faster across the board. There was a speed improvement of maybe 10% between WebOS 1.0 and 1.2.1, so I think it's safe to assume that they've already picked the low-hanging fruit. I don't expect the performance of this phone to be even remotely suitable for every day use for at least a year. I figure it's going to either take a substantial amount of work on the lower levels of the OS, or they're going to have to throw Moore's law and new hardware at it... and the recently-announced Pixi is clearly not the hardware that's going to be 10× faster.
As soon as we wish to be happier, we are no longer happy.

That's actually the first time I've seen a guy complaining. That said, I've never used a Palm Pre, so I can't really say much.
From all the videos I've seen of it, it seemed pretty snappy. Maybe that guy was running 10+ apps all at once!
I dunno. I certainly think the OS is the best mobile OS out there right now. (Of course, WP7S is coming and that may change it all, although I haven't seen any multitasking on it).
