Here comes another for-netbooks operating system. Jolicloud.

It's a mainly cloud-based flavor of Ubuntu with backup services and some sort of Facebook-integrated friends network. It also has a handy one-click application installer and it's optimized for the small screen and lower processing power of a netbook. And dear God is it pretty. I haven't seen really good understated-efficiency type UI design since Leopard, but Jolicloud looks polished to a shine, just like its website.

What do you guys think? Do we need another optimized-for-netbooks, internet-centric operating system? Does Jolicloud do the job? Is anyone ever going to use it?

Too internet based. But functional enough.
PC magazine (or maximum pc) had a review about different netbook systems a while ago. I'll see if i can find the issue.

If I had a netbook I would download it, for sure. It looks pretty and it's features are useful.

I've heard great things about it. One of the awesome things I think they do is to provide a list of netbook models which they support, which is a pretty cool, no-bullshit approach.

Personally, I think we need another netbook OS about as much as we need another flu pandemic, but we need a better netbook OS pretty badly, and it could fill that need. Whether it beats Crunchbang remains to be seen, I suppose.
As soon as we wish to be happier, we are no longer happy.

Horray for easier downloads than Linux!
But seriously, it's just Ubuntu if you don't have internet.

I'm downloading it, and I'll be posting my thoughts afterwards.

Currently using Ubuntu Netbook Remix, with a full install on the SSD. It has been an interesting experience. It's definitely not faster than XP, except at shutting down, but I do like how it's faster than the regular ubuntu. The UI is simple, but effective, although there are some tiny annoying shit around the panels.

I'm going to try Crunchbang one more time, this time on the SSD. I believe the SD card was being hella slow.

But yeah, I'm really looking forward to this. I'd love to see an awesome, polished OS for my netbook.

at Free Geek we install Easy Peasy (formerly the Ubuntu Eee project) on all the netbooks we sell (which are mostly Eee 700 series machines right now, the others are too new for us to be getting them donated). There are some annoyances with how it relates to the file manager, but other than that I think it's an excellent match for netbooks, with plenty of local software along with your internet needs. It's also quite nice looking.

Oh, I should give some feedback.

I have a Eee 701 and I installed UbuntuNR on the main disk some months ago. As I said on the earlier post, I did download Jolicloud, but I didn't install it yet. Cause UbuntuNR is working really really greatly.

It's fast (omg 5-7 secs to shut down), it's good looking enough and the Ubuntu Software Center works very well (okay, this isn't a NR exclusive, but it's worth saying some about it).

I might try to install Jolicloud soon on my brother's Acer Aspire One, and I'll give feedback about it if so.

About that easypeasy, it looks like it's pretty much the same as UbuntuNR, so I won't bother downloading it.

This is amazing. I'm using an Acer Aspire One A110 and this is the best experience I've had so far with any OS on this machine. I've had Windows XP, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Netbook Remix and now Jolicloud on here and Jolicloud is easily the fastest boot and most responsive. The only snag I had installing it was using the provided USB creator but using the manual creation method was effortless. The actual install was faster but otherwise similar to a Ubuntu installation. This is far and away the most user-friend linux distro I've ever used and I'm hoping that plays out in its favour. I haven't had too much a chance to play with tweaks yet but I imagine that anything a PU would want is still in play. Updates were straightforward and timely. Installing applications was the best thing ever. No mucking about with repositories to get Skype installed. No wacky error messages on first boot.

Best. Netbook. OS. Ever.

No joke. If you have a netbook, put this on it today.

Well, I'm quite confused. Ubuntu NR has a nice user-friendly UI, updates are also straightforward, installing applications is easy as pie and I didn't have to do any "mucking" with repositories to get Skype installed. And I did not have any wacky error messages on first boot.

Can you be more specific on what are the differences between Jolicloud and Ubuntu NR?

Also, how much space does it occupy?
