As some of you may know, the PS3 has a function that allows you to install another OS on it. This weekend, I have attempted to install it.

It installed fairly successfully. This is the boot screen that comes up normally. Then, it comes up with the logon menu. All well and good.

However, the last couple of times it has had a problem after I've logged on. This screen comes up; which is basically the desktop, except without the wallpaper, and minus the taskbar and icons. The mouse can move freely, but I can't click on anything (because there is nothing). I can also CTRL+ALT+DEL.

First time I booted it up, it came up with a taskbar, a wallpaper and icons. Second time, same. Third or so time, it came up with the taskbar, but no wallpaper and icons. Everything else was fine.

Next several times, this. I have no idea why it's not loading.

Another side note; the very first time I started it up, it came with a file manager called "Thunar". It didn't and doesn't work, and I don't know why and have no idea whether it relates to the problem.

This is the iso I downloaded to install it. It is Ubuntu 8.10; however, it is a modified version called "xubuntu", which is an official version of Ubuntu Linux that uses the XFCE desktop environment. It's designed for low-specification computers.

If anyone knows anything about PS3s/xubuntu/linux/computers that may be able to help it would be greatly appriciated.

Well, what exactly are you planning to do with it?

You've got a keyboard, yeah? After you boot into Xubuntu (doesn't matter if it's before or after you log in), press Ctrl+Alt+F1. You should get to a console. If you don't, I have no flippin' idea what's wrong, but if you do, I'm interested to see what your /etc/X11/Xorg.conf looks like.

D: Looks like I'll have to get this hack to stop it from auto-updating the system...

Anyhoo, this is a picture of the screen, and this is a zoomed in photo of the bottom right hand part of the screen. I managed to open this command box thing; it's about the only thing that works besides the mouse and the keyboard. However, I don't know what to do now.

I thought PS3 updates were optional.

They are optional in that if you don't do them your PS3 is limited to playing single player games and watching bluray movies that don't require things that may be released in future firmware updates.
