The Skinny: IRC and Ventrilo.

Welcome to Metanet! If you'd prefer a more live experience to the one you are used to on the forums, prepare to join the wonderful Metanet subcultures that are IRC and Ventrilo.
Ah, the wonders of IRC. IRC? What's that you say? Internet Relay Chat is one of the oldest forms of chat and most addicting on the net. If you already know about it, then don't let me stop you! If not, then let me introduce it to you! IRC is an excellent way of opening new doors in growing communities, just like ours. mIRC and Chatzilla are perhaps the most popluar IRC clients available.

Server: irc.mountai.net
Channels: #n , #music, #doomsday

General rules for the IRC channel can be found here.

mIRC is a free downloadable client which seems to have an expiry date, but never actually expires. Like sex!

Chatzilla is a built-in for Firefox. It's lame, as are all those who use it.

mibbit exists.

Xchat, for our Linux friends, is also all right.

Note: If kicks for bad behavior persist, banning from the channel altogether is an option.

Feel free to use it 24/7.
Original poster was Kablizzy, but I raped his post and added new content.

That being said, here are same basic commands that will help you navigate mIRC, the program I recomment the most:

/msg (Nick) to Message a member.
/me blanks. (Makes it appear as, "SlappyMcGee blanks")
/server irc.mountai.net (Actually connect to the server if you don't want to set it as default.)
/join #n (To join a channel.)
/nick (Nick): Change your username to (Nick).

A lot of the rest is self-explanatory.

Hope this helps.

NB: The back-up server is always irc.starfusion.org. Go there if the server is down.

Links!

XChat (Linux, Windows, Mac)
mIRC (Windows)
Ventrilo (Windows and Mac)

Easiest way to connect:

1. Click here. It's my personal site with an embedded Mibbit chatbox.
2. Enter you username. Password is only necessary if you have registered your nick and want to be identified automatically.
3. Hit Enter on your keyboard.

I'd never have thought I would find an mIRC client for Mac.

Thanks Tanner.

And of course thanks Slappy for this.

Cool idea. This'll be insanely useful; I for one know how hard it was to find out about irc from a noob's perspective. Again, great idea.

It's true. My girlfriend calls me Slappy and I've had ED ever since tanner showed me the picture of him looking like Bruce Vilanch/ Dave.

maybe it's just me, but Vent seems very weird. There's like what looks like a million topics, and its all confusing :/

Those are channels where people can go to have private conversations, or to have a conversation in general, without getting in the way of the people in the lobby.

Except they aren't actually used, so just chill in the main lobby

The new beard really seals the Bruce Vilanch deal.

About that, when you get on Vent, could you please not go through every channel? I'm sure it was probably really interesting to see 400 channels, but please don't cycle through every last channel, as it's kind of annoying in a way. Also, if you don't have a mic, I recommend pressing the chat button on the right hand site of the program.. believe me, it makes the program so much easier, and we can help you set it up if you need help. other than that, I'm happy someone got on Vent, as it's been so freaking lifeless for the past week or two.

Yeah. Hop into chat (using the button on the right side) and whoever is on Ventrilo can help you set things up.

Aw, dudes. We definitely forgot the easiest way to get on IRC. 3 steps:

1. Click here. It's my personal site with an embedded Mibbit chatbox.
2. Enter you username. Password is only necessary if you have registered your nick and want to be identified automatically.
3. Hit Enter on your keyboard.

You are now in #n. Enjoy.

Wow, nothing happens on Vent whenever I'm on, no one ever talks, but neither do I. All I heard was about this podcast thing and how it sucked balls. It doesn't seem very exciting at the moment.

Silverex XChat is what I use; it's the best choice in my opinion because it's highly customizable and open-source freeware.

Also, thanks for posting this. I was wondering if there would ever be a topic for it in the new forums.

Good tutorial. Perhaps Vent won't be as sleepy now.

Ventrilo web site: http://ventrilo.com/
Click "Download" on the left.
Download the client program that goes with your computer. And sorry, Linux users.

the irc is great, much more fun than Vent, people are noticing my presence.

By the way, who's this Tanner person? I saw him but i don't know of anyone on the forums as that.
