I had a large conversation with some friends recently about our expectations for the future expansion of human technology. I expressed my belief that humans will be cable of creating conscious AI within the next 50 or so years, and that doing so could allow us to accelerate to much higher levels of technological advancement at a much faster rate. My friend did not agree with this view, however, stating that our lack of resources on Earth and our overpopulation will stunt the development of high-level AI.

Will it be possible in our lifetimes? What will the implications be? Will it be possible to create conscious AI that has humanity's best interests at heart, or will it be self-serving and mark the end of the human race?
