If you're putting people like lord_day (who could fit into both lists) into 'mapmakers', that'd suggest that mapmaking takes priority over community contribution. So I'd put him in 'mapmakers'.

That said, does it matter? Hold on, is this just a list to be kept here on the forums to inform other members of the community, or is it a plan for the N Wiki?

Soon as in later. Probably post-December. However, aperture and I are in contact, so rest assured we are at least thinking about it.

Oh, hah, whoops.

Yeah, apg should be in both lists, then (although perhaps not in mapmakers, if others feel that way. Definitely in community). And by that 'priority' comment, I didn't mean in terms of value to the community; rather in a "if it has to be one or the other" kind of way.

Okay, look dude, I'm gonna be honest here...

These things aren't ever really a good idea. The community already has a feel of who's active where and who the big names are, as it's the nature of communities to understand itself in this way. Furthermore, it will inject a healthy amount of drama, both because we'd be contesting the worthiness of individuals. Even people who make the list can be offended that others, probably including people who they thought considered them friends, would suggest that they're not important. If nobody suggests that nobody is unimportant, any moron can nominate himself and you end up with a "I will edit the OP to include everyone who posts in this thread" messageboard game, and that's just retarded. And obviously, people who don't make the cut won't feel terribly good about themselves, especially those that thought they might make the list.
We have a very intricate web of connectedness; each member probably has opinions, both good and bad, about a substantial number of other members, but you'd be forcing all the possible negativity to come to light if you want to make this the least bit honest. You're completely removing all tact from our interactions forevermore if you have us lay out what we think of everyone else (which, again, would be a requirement for your A-List to be accurate).
...not that the list could even be objective anyway, since it's compiled necessarily from bias. For example, I happen to think you're all a bunch of asshats and that I should be the only one on the list.

And another important point: Who are you? I've been a part of this community since 2004, and I don't know who the hell you are, so how could you possibly be someone with enough scope to be able to make a list like this? If someone who had been here for a while or someone on staff tried to do this, then fine, they'd probably have enough insight to make it reasonably accurate. I'd still think it's a horrendously bad idea, but they could at least pull it off.

I'm not speaking as someone in power but as a member when I recommend that you stop this foolishness. You don't have to listen, but I highly advise that you do.
As for anyone else, from the same position, I ask that you not participate. You can if you want me to think you're a shithead, but I ask that you don't.

Goddamn children...

Exactly.

This community is small enough that we all know who's respected for what. This thread offers very little benefit.

Naysayers;

In the crazy and highly unlikely event that we ever get any entirely new members, if they go here and see all these notable names, that is where they will go for advice and guidance (hopefully.)

Doesn't it make sense? I mean, the existence of this list doesn't hurt anyone, except for those fickle enough to be upset about not being included. (That reminds me...why am I requested for removal?)

I'm a little perplexed as to why you need this thread at all.

After a few days here you'll likely know the style of maps and posts that interest you.

After a few weeks you'll probably have picked out your favourite personal authors.

After a month you'll no doubt know who is considered in general to be the best at what they do.

-

The main danger of threads such as these is the influence they might hold over new users. Instead of exploring the forums and archives and deciding for themselves who their favourites are, they'll be told from the off who to pay attention to. Now, I'm not suggestiing that all of you would be so easily lead, but it would certainly have a degree of effect that could potentially subtract attention away from newer authors (especially on NUMA).

The forums are full of references to who's great at what, and NUMA has countless references (so and so influenced this, this is a ded to etc..).

So, take the time and explore the community yourselves. This thread is largely redundant and potnetially harmful. I really don't see much benefit, if any.

I have been here for over 4 months.

I am not asking for the 4 months for which I have been here, but the scores of months for which I had not. I know some, I don't know enough. Is that so wrong?

Well, I'm not really protesting, merely raising a few concerns. If I want to know about a community I'll get involved, and if I have to I'll do my research. It makes no difference to me if threads like this exist or not.

How is that preferrable to them making a post like normal and reading the replies? All the quirks of this community will naturally manifest themselves.

Good god, I hope you're being sarcastic. I'm so bad with that stuff on the internet. If not:

You do realize you said "the only people who would care are the people not on the list" immediately followed by "Why might I not be on the list?"

...

right?

Uh...I said it was fickle to complain about not being on the list, then asked why I was requested for removal.

Requesting for facts is different from complaining...right?

You imply that you are interested in the reasons for requestins your removal so you can complain about them.

Anyway, here they are: you're annoying and spammy, your maps are not particularly notable, you haven't spent enough time around the community to make any high-profile friends, and you're not an interesting person. Those were my reasons. This is why people will feel bad if they don't get on this list. People like me will tell them what we think. Tsukatu is seconded, although originally, I didn't really have much of an opinion about this, since I thought it was Wiki-related. Good on Yanni for stepping in and clarifying.
