i really don't see the point in lying about reading a book...besides, i doubt anyone with the attention span or capability to understand the content of the book, would actually have a reason to do soxVxCrushloaderusSupremusxVx wrote:1984 is the book people most often lie about having read.

Oh, that. That was back when scythe still bothered to warn us about nsfw content. Good thread.SlappyMcGee wrote:http://forum.easterviking.com/viewtopic ... lit=OregonxVxCrushloaderusSupremusxVx wrote:1984 is the book people most often lie about having read.
P.S. Good job linking back to your glory days, though it had nearly no bearing on the present topic. Wonder how many more times you can slip it in before the year's over.

Are you dense? The action was entirely spawned by AF not reading 1984 and lying to his teacher's about it. Let's see how many times you can overstep your competence before the year is over.flagmyidol wrote:Oh, that. That was back when scythe still bothered to warn us about nsfw content. I don't know what you dudes are talking about, considering I'm running a gigantic absurd webcomic and the same dude I always was. Maybe you are just back-peddling, though. Maligus has no frame of reference for these so-called 'good times' I used to have, and frankly, what you said, flagmyidol, was not a -joke-. I mean, I guess you could have been being ironic about me not being cool anymore, but evidently, you genuinely believe that, and you were starkly wrong about it not being at all relevant to the topic at hand. So, I'm not sure what to make of anything you've said other than, "I make bad jokes or be a dick and then when people don't find me being a dick hilarious they have lost their edge". If I were admin, I would change your nickname to Louis C.K.
I finished the Doctorow book. It was pretty amazing, although short as hell. I'm reading A Game of Thrones on Clovic's suggestion. It's been moderately amazing, but it's daunting as hell. (In a week of reading, I'm a seventh of the way through the first book in a series.)

1984 is a classic, as we all know. It is Great Literature. That is, it's one of those books you're supposed to have read. It is also one hell of a fucking difficult book to read, and for that reason a lot of people haven't read it. That's not to say they're ignorant or anything, it's just that they don't want to put themselves through such a grim book. Same reason Beckett's trilogy has been sitting unread on my shelf for months. So I can quite understand the motivation behind lying about it.Maligus wrote:i really don't see the point in lying about reading a book...besides, i doubt anyone with the attention span or capability to understand the content of the book, would actually have a reason to do soxVxCrushloaderusSupremusxVx wrote:1984 is the book people most often lie about having read.

Alright, I apologize for not paying all that much attention to that thread. I was /not/ "being a dick," in any way.SlappyMcGee wrote:I don't know what you dudes are talking about, considering I'm running a gigantic absurd webcomic and the same dude I always was. (I realize that humor/sarcasm/whatever is harder to convey over the internet; I kind've assume that most people will err on the side of humor, not dickery.)
Finally, I agree completely with gloomp that 1984's not easy to read, and it's unreasonable to expect today's kids to get through it. It's also a book that will only be understood by those who would have read it regardless.
EDIT: To cap off all the rambling, I finished Conrad's Nostromo, and it is /brilliant/. I'm almost inclined to agree with the quote on the inside flap proclaiming it to be the greatest English-language novel ever. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, especially if you're already into Joseph Conrad.

Just finished The Sandman by Neil Gaiman. Way too long, way too overwrought, way too amazing in every way.

I love the shit out of you, SlappyMc... SlappyMc... SlappyMcGeisha.
Anyway, so far (100 pages in, ish), I really love the dialogue. Dickensian, twisted, the author assumes you know things you don't... makes you connect and think a little. So refreshing. Also the way he slips in his own opinions as a sort of message to his government, and to give his book meaning on a different level. Also the characterizations, the descriptions.
Ew, I'm gushing.

Reading The Known World (Which is AMAZING) and Gravity's Rainbow, which is also amazing. Also in the middle of many other things, but those are the two books I am focusing on. Known World should be done by tomorrow and I don't know if I will start something else while I am still trudging through Pynchon. Thinking about going through Homer, but am not sure.
