Goddammit. I said NZ$2100, which is only US$1600. Plus, I don't want a desktop and a laptop. I want to be able to game at school too.
Yeah, £2400 is insane. That's akin to sixteen motorboats, a summer home in Guam, and a blowjob from three filipino boys.
¥2400? Are you crazy? You'd be lucky to get a DVD of three Filipino boys doing unspeakable things on motorboats in Guam for that much.

Honestly, just get either that Asus or a MBP... MacBook Airs are shit for gaming since they have low-end CPUs

Here's another suggestion which (I hope) will see you under $1600 USD. From the US site: $1400, no shipping. A lenovo T510 laptop. I use it for school (as in, my university gave it to me, after paying $1500 per year, with all programs preloaded on it) and I use it mainly for CAD processing. It can easily handle that. I see people at school playing EVE and LoL, which are working well with the system. I played L4D2 on high settings and there was a slight noticeable lag, medium having no lag at all. Problem is, NZ prices for this are more than twice as high. As well, for some reason I got a normal 2-pin cable with my laptop and lenovo gives the annoying 3-pin cables with the online orders ... hmmm ... If you can find a 3-pin laptop charger cable, looks something like this, get the laptop. I recommend this personally as it's battery life for gaming is not horrible (2.5 hours while gaming) and about 3.5 hours if do something else. Here's lenovo USA so go to products, laptops - t series, t510, customize the performance one and choose these settigns (or better):
  • Intel Core i7
  • Windows 7 Professional (either 32-bit or 64-bit is fine, note that 64-bit will see more memory than 32-bit, but some older games may be incompatible.
  • NVIDIA NVS 3100m Optimus Graphics with 512MB DDR3 Memory
  • 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM) (It's $130 fricking dollars to get 1 dim in the US, but free for NZ ... wtf?)
  • No fingerprint reader or camera (really unnecessary features, but if you want them, they are cheap at least)
  • 500 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm (it's really a must to get higher rpm hard disks if you wish to do a lot of processing ... otherwise you will be slowed down)
  • 9 cell 2.8Ah Li-Ion Battery - Dual Mode (a must if you want good battery life)
  • Bluetooth is nice to have.
The equiavlent costs around NZ$3300 according to lenovo, but I doubt the NZ dollar is doing that badly ;) This laptop is pretty good, though. It is worth nowhere near $3300, NZ or USD, but $1500 is a reasonable price for it.

The XP emulation on the 64-bit Windows 7 Professional should be compatible with about 80% of programs made after Win95.

Ergo, if you wish to use 4 GB of ram, you will go for 64 bit. Thank you Kablizzy, for that. I suspected that most W95 games would work with XP mode, but was not sure, as I don't require XP mode for any games. Back to pavel, I suggested that one specifically because it comes with WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL and not HOME PREMIUM because, as you most definitely know, HOME PREMIUM DOES NOT OFFER WITH XP MODE. Thus, when having Windows 7 HOME PREMIUM 64-BIT, you are guaranteed issues with older apps and will either need to UPGRADE ($200 upgrade package for 7 professional, unless you are a university/college student in the US or Canada, in which case it's a lot cheaper) or get 32-bit. That clear enough? I specifically suggested WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL there. If you wish to cheap out, go ahead, but I warned ahead of time. Next, it's a damn laptop. Even for games, you don't need more than 4 GB of RAM. Hell, I'll even risk it and say that for most games you don't need more than 3 GB of RAM. Chances are, he already knows how much RAM he will need for his games. I suggested 4 GB because that's not only avoiding issues with most games that are out now, but also prepares for more intensive games that will come out in the future. Starcraft 2, which came out this year in JULY, requires 1GB of RAM at MINIMUM, and recommends 2 GB of RAM. If you are running games from the 90's and late 80's, you will almost certainly be using DOSBOX to run those games, which only has a 32 bit variant. This will work with 64-bit windows, as windows itself has a 32 bit emulation. It's only some applications that you need windows XP mode. Finally, who in their right mind would ever buy more than 4 GB of RAM for their laptop? It's excessive. No need for it. If you know how to customize your installation and how to make it run efficiently, you don't need more than 4 GB for your laptop. Desktop, different. You may want to have more, depending on your usage. Servers, WAY different, especially if you plan on running VM's off of it. You will require much more RAM than just a measly 4 GB. But this is a laptop. Be serious! 4 GB is enough.
Make sure it's windows 7 professional and you won't have any problems with most games and applications, no matter whether 64 or 32 bit.

You failed to persuade me that having 4GB RAM and an OS that will only see 3GB of it makes sense. Who cares? Even if he needs to play 16-bit games, Blizz is right about DOSBOX and there are a multitude of x86 emulators such as VirtualBox that can be used to create virtual PCs for free. If you're going to buy a $1000 or more laptop, you better make sure you can futureproof it with more RAM in the future. 4GB RAM is the norm for laptops these days. Any less is simply obsolete unless you are buying a netbook, which the OP is not buying. Why you'd suggest 4GB RAM and a 32-bit OS is ever beyond me...

By the by, I'm seriously considering upgrading my MBP to 8GB RAM. No joke.

Explain exactly where I suggested 4 GB of RAM and a 32 bit OS. Until then ... I will consider you not reading properly. Blizz only said about XP emulation, unless I'm missing something invisible in his post.

...Actually, come to think of it, yeah, 3 GB of RAM is going to be almost exactly as much, cost-wise, as 4.

You realize you go to school to learn right? Not play games? And that the consensus of pretty much the entire internet is that gaming laptops are a really stupid idea and that you'd be better off (and spend less) just getting decent desktop and a low-powered laptop? (Which would run N and any other flash game just fine if you absolutely have to play games).

See first post regarding exchange rates. That goes for everyone. I'll probably be buying a laptop for about $2100, which is US$1600. This is important. Also, everything in New Zealand is more expensive. It's just a thing.
You said NZ $3000. Now you're saying NZ $2100. Which is it? Also, if you're using the dollar sign without a qualifier, it always means USD. If you want to talk about your little island nation pastoral Communist dollars, you can say NZ$. If you don't like it, too bad.
Plus, I don't want a desktop and a laptop. I want to be able to game at school too.

A $1600 laptop will be obsolete for gaming in a year, if not already obsolete on the day you buy it. Do yourself a favor and pay attention in class.

Gaming laptops are a huge scam.

Fuck yes. And for added awesome, 360 controllers make for awesome computer-compatible SNES controller replacements. (As would I PS3 controller I'm sure, I just don't have a PS3 controller to attempt that with). Combine my laptop's video out with my 32" TV, Snes9x, and a 360 controller wireless dongle, and I get to play Super Mario World from my couch again :D (except it looks even better with the smoothing filters!)

A) The Genesis version is superior. @Pavel.

B) I also use the XBOX360 controller. The PS3 Controller drivers are much more difficult to make work.

I think what we are suggesting here, OP, is you save up your money and buy a good desktop computer and play games on your home computer or console :P. I agree, the POS3 controller is a pain to install in Windows. If I had a 360, I'd overuse that controller on any game I could. Alas, I'm stuck with the PS3 controller. Good for driving and racing games (Need for Speed, for instance) but really bad for something you'd think it'd be good for: flying games (having the ability to turn controller in some direction and iuse the analog sticks to move camera sounds like a good idea, but it doesn't work well with the PS3 controller. I wish it did, because Descent 3 is such a great game for a controller vs a keyboard/mouse).SNES9x is best emulator for SNES? I'll consider trying it out. Last SNES emulator I used was DS SNES emulator and that sucked balls.
