Well you could ban idiots from intelligent communities to find that the only communities left for them would also have idiots therein forming a massive blob of idiots that encourage each other to be idiots.
Then well they could all come in at once instead of you trying to deal with each person individually. Really I'm not sure how a dumb apple would spoil the rest either.

Did you read the article? It's not that a fool makes the other people around him into fools, it's that a vocal fool makes it look like the quality of discourse in the community is low. A fool will have no qualms about hanging out with intellectuals (he may not even realize that this is the case) but an intellectual may balk at the idea of joining a community where the most active person on IRC is kuri.GamingWolf wrote:Really I'm not sure how a dumb apple would spoil the rest either.

Reddit.
Oh, also, this happened to us.
EDIT: does the author of this article understand that italics stand out a little less every time he or she uses them?

Actually Hacker News but there's so much cross-posting that it barely matters.centerƒire wrote:Reddit.

I don't frequent HN, or rather I didn't during the old days but are you saying this has happened to them? Because the content and discussion there is still 20 times better that reddit's. I'm sure it's gone downhill some but that's honestly mostly to be blamed on reddit. Front page of the internet unfortunately either brings unwanted attention to the remaining good sections or brings too much attention to the terrible ones.Duchess of Awesome wrote:Actually Hacker News but there's so much cross-posting that it barely matters.centerƒire wrote:Reddit.

Well if you're worried about appearances from other people you're just going to get into a schizophrenically political mindset. You can't treat a group as an individual and you can't treat an individual like a group. I really don't have a problem with what's going on here right now so if you're going to file a complaint about the worth of anyone here by completely judging them within your own perspective, I suggest that you come forward with what exactly it is you want me to do about it.Duchess of Awesome wrote:Did you read the article? That said, your concern suggests you want you to do something about it. Well, what are you waiting for? This community is more of a tavern to me than a career.

Oh, I thought you were commenting on the source of the article. HN has its own sort of douchebaggery but it's admittedly a higher-brow sort of douchebaggery.centerƒire wrote:I don't frequent HN, or rather I didn't during the old days but are you saying this has happened to them? I think what you mean is that you shouldn't treat an individual like a group and vice versa. You certain can do it, and moreover people do do it. You can't expect people to really get to know a community before they decide if they want to get involved because the former likely requires the latter. At a certain point, any potential new member of a community is going to be judging the community based on, again likely, a shallow impression of what it really is. Certainly there are exceptions but as a general rule it's socially acceptable on the internet to judge a community by its outward appearance and people do it all the time.GamingWolf wrote:Well if you're worried about appearances from other people you're just going to get into a schizophrenically political mindset. Nah, I don't want to do anything about it. Just thought it was an interesting article.GamingWolf wrote:I really don't have a problem with what's going on here right now so if you're going to file a complaint about the worth of anyone here by completely judging them within your own perspective, I suggest that you come forward with what exactly it is you want me to do about it.

Also, I know I'm an asshole.

I'm not sure about the suicide part (nor do I even want to address it), but yes to the others.Rhekatou wrote:Is kuri the one who had the suicide / banned / five different names problems?
And I guess I still fall in this category of "stupid" users, don't I? Or, I did... No clue.

I suppose the brand of "stupid" mentioned is not the kind of stupid that is known to the one doing it.Sunset wrote:I'm not sure about the suicide part (nor do I even want to address it), but yes to the others.Rhekatou wrote:Is kuri the one who had the suicide / banned / five different names problems?
