Anyway, I read a fascinating book on this recently. In several billion years or something, our sun will start expanding, gradually making life on Earth impossible. Assuming humanity hasn't succumbed to one of its hundred other major problems, this will spell our doom.

PS My friends and I have already planned a big party on the day the Mayan calendar ends.

I saw a show on this yesterday explaining the whole Mayan thing.

On December 21st 2012, the Earth, Sun, and Black hole in the center of the galaxy will all line up, switching the polar charge on each end of the earth. Doing so would knock out all cell phones, internet, and TV, and many global blackouts would occur. It's not the end of the world, it's supposed to be a time of great change. Nostradamus also saw this same event happening, but he predicted that it would be a time of global destruction, not just a time of global change. So, that clears up all of the talk of the Mayan stuff, THAT'S what is supposed to happen in 2012
