A Christian who's actually a Muslim?! Someone has been watching a little Fox News and made the mistake of thinking it was fair and balanced.
I don't think it's possible to argue with a person who believes in these "facts" because someone somewhere said them.
For what it's worth, this is one of those rare elections where I don't mind either Presidential candidate. There's a bunch of people in America who have trained themselves over the last 8 years to hate one side or the other with a passion, and these people think McCain/Obama is the worst thing that could ever happen to America! Clearly, they don't have perspective on the issue. They're both so close to the middleground in much of their stances on the issues that to hate one of them explicitly means you've lost sight of what they stand for.
Palin is a crazy whore. Biden is ineffective and neutral.
Anyone who says that they like Palin isn't a Republican, but is something weirder and more fundamentalist insane. Here's a woman that just happened to get a pick for VP during the same election which earlier saw a woman making a run for the Presidency. What a fucking coincidence. Moreover, she's so very conservative and yet so very afraid to tow the conservative line that she leaves her constituency with no idea how she feels about things.
I don't know two things about Biden. It's probably because the media has really been hounding Palin more, exposing the kind of nonsensical whore she is. That's bad, on one hand, but it's good because it lets the Republicans know precisely the kind of weasel-worded nonsense that their ticket will try to use just to earn a vote.
McCain could have done much better without Palin.
We laugh when McCain says he's a "maverick", because he's towing the party line so well, but he really is different from any Republican before him. If the things he said were actually true and he could commit to them in office, he would evolve the entire party to the left a shade to meet the modern expectations of government. McCain is very much different from the Bushes and Reagan and Ford. In fact, he might even have a similar quality to Jimmy Carter, who was twice as good as Reagan. (The Republicans really like Reagan because he was the only worthwhile Republican, not because he was the best President.)
If the guy were able to do what he says he'll do in office, he really would be "maverick" in that he wouldn't be a classic Republican. He'd be the new Republican, which was the Democrat just fifteen or twenty years ago.

Not at all odd, and it's more like awkward phrasing than a slip. At first glance it might seem like Obama meant to say Christian, but that wouldn't fit with the sentence—he was agreeing that John McCain had never personally called him a Muslim. The host tries to correct his statement, thinking he meant Christian, which Obama initially agrees with, before clarifying with "well, what I'm saying is that he hasn't suggested that I'm a Muslim".incluye wrote:It's kind of an odd slip to make, though, isn't it?blue_tetris wrote:A Christian who's actually a Muslim?! Obama did mean to say Muslim, he just didn't intend to suggest that was his actual faith. The summary '...the Democratic presidential nominee was outlining his Christianity but accidentally said, "my Muslim faith"' seems quite misleading when, according to the interview quoted in the article, he was not outlining his Christianity at the time.
A verbal gaffe couldn't make a guy a Muslim—it's not reciting the Shahada—and it would be essentially irrelevant considering Obama is a well-documented professed church-going Christian.

I was almost in the exat middle of the political compass. I don't really care to vote for anyone, though, as I'm 16.

I see it a bit differently. All the speeches he gives aside, and whether or not he appears to have a different mindset altogether, it still came down to voting exactly as though he was a mental Bush clone 90% of the time. If you (not you "you"; the "anyone in the general audience" "you") think that the way Bush has been running things for the last 8 years is anywhere near minimally acceptable, then I'm sorry, you've proven yourself too stupid to be considered informed about anything, and you shouldn't be allowed to vote. If you vote for McCain, you're voting George W in for another four years, and that's just unacceptable.blue_tetris wrote:We laugh when McCain says he's a "maverick", because he's towing the party line so well, but he really is different from any Republican before him. And something recently dawned on me...
McCain is old. This dude is meaningfully likely to kick the bucket while in office... meaning Palin would be in charge.
Palin as president. Can you imagine how screwed the US would be?

I think that's the biggest fear of all. I mean, I don't expect McCain to die. I think that's a funny joke that we liberals make. But the fact that Palin will have an influence over the nation is a scary thought. Think about the role of the last VP. If Palin even wears the Cheney hat for a moment, shit is hitting fans.Tsukatu wrote:I see it a bit differently. But, yeah, I see how McCain votes like a New Republican (the Republican Bush invented) to some extent, but I see these shining rays of hope in the way he perceives certain things; for instance, getting scrotum-shocked by Vietnamese people seems to have mellowed out his stance on human rights a bit. Not enough to vote for him, mind you. Certainly not. I'd vote for Lieberman before I'd vote for McCain; and I'd definitely vote for Obama, if I felt like voting in this election.
I'm simply saying that if McCain does win, it's still a point for the liberals. No matter how this election goes, the political center for Americans will be shifted a bit left from what it was the last eight years. It was possible we were going to get Bush x 2 or even Bush x 1 for a Republican nominee. Instead, we got Bush x 0.7, which is still 70% more Bush than most people would enjoy, but it's better than a majority of the alternatives that could have showed up on that ticket.
Palin is there to fill in gigantic Bushy gap.

Unless you were disagreeing with my statement, which looks plausible as I reread it, in which case we must agree to disagree.

I think Suki's right. Have you been keeping track of what Palin has been saying? If you want to do anything with Palin except rape her and leave her to worry about what to do with the unborn child, then you are crazy.

That was sort of the point. I thought after all the verbal abuse you'd be wise to my brand of humor by now.incluye wrote:My goodness, you just repeated yourself.Tsukatu wrote:Of course not always. For example, if you think the McCain/Palin ticket is more sane than the Obama/Biden ticket (or that it's sane at all), then that's a pretty foolproof indication that you're insane.
"Remember, just because someone has different views than you doesn't mean that they're insane."
"No, of course not. But if your view of ticket sanity is different than my view, you're insane."
Unless you were disagreeing with my statement, which looks plausible as I reread it, in which case we must agree to disagree.
But it'll be more than disagreement - I do want you to know, in all sincerity, that if you support the McCain/Palin ticket with the knowledge that you'd be basically voting in a slightly more liberal George W Bush for another four years, then I don't think that you have the capability of making an informed choice.
I mean, unless you can justify it somehow. But, haha, like that's gonna happen.

I love you.Tsukatu wrote:I'm something of a demoblic republocrat. Basically, I'm a democrat because liberal chicks are hotter, but I'm also selfish and insane.
I'm voting Democrat - I registered to vote this afternoon, and I'm mailing it in tomorrow. I can't stand McCain's inability to accept change, or his complete obsession with changing the subject.
Also, Palin is mentally handicapped. She likes to lie. A lot.

This kind of stuff really frightens me. Though I give McCain some credit for trying to put a halt to screams of "Traitor!" and "Off with his head!". Palin is like a rabid dog - I think McCain made a terrible choice with his VP.

I agree with Kablizzy, for the most part. I think choosing sides just makes things complicated and divided; however, being divided does come with its benefits. Being 17 I haven't been following the election incredibly close as I might have been if I were actually voting. I would not vote for someone just because I am "---." That is just ridiculous. I will vote for whomever I can agree with and whomever can do the best job of running this country. Of course that likely means switching sides every election or so, and when people ask me whether I am Democratic or Republican I hate saying that I am one or the other - half because of what I just said and half because I hate getting into stupid political fights that usually end up in one person yelling, "Well McCain shouldn't be president because HE HAS A FUNNY FACE NEENER NEENER!" or "A black guy? Really?" On that topic, though, having a black president could really do some good. My English teacher once told us a story where she was in Verona and picked up a TIME magazine depicting the fist woman to hold a major political position (something along the lines of that) and she felt so different because for the first time there was this subconscious role model for women, the first to step up to that. All these 'ole white guys have never really dealt with that (notice I am being general here so don't nit-pick me) because the only presidents we have have been old white guys. I watched a video where the guy realized this (I believe it was a Young Turks video or something?) and how great it could be to have the first black president. Of course voting for Obama just because he is black is about the same as voting against him because he is black. So I try to look at things from my incredibly undeveloped (except for a few stances) political viewpoints and pick the best. So far the only thing I see with McCain is the war only because I do not think it would be a great idea to just pull out. I think pride has a lot to do with the war, both staying and pulling out, and there is a lot more to it. So, that pretty much sums things up for me. I need to learn to make paragraphs instead of mountain texts.
Also, in leaving, everyone should take a look at this.

As something of an aside, the Secret Service is officially investigating the threats against Obama yelled at Palin rallies. they've made it clear that if they determine who yelled the threats they would prosecute them.
