Are we still evolving?

If you can come up with a post to refute what blue_tetris had to say on this matter, then by all means keep the "debate" going. But if there's any real scholarly debate to be had on this issue, it's over the semantics. It's not "pointless and uninteresting" for me to watch young forumers with no clue get beaten on by Tsukatu and his followers, really, but a little unkind, perhaps.

Sure, if anyone's actually going to talk about whether we should redefine evolution in terms of what's currently happening to the human race, or whether ... actually, I can't think of anything else valid to possibly bring up. This is a semantics argument at best, and at worst, which it currently is, it's an unwinnable DURRRR pitting those who haven't read or understood Dave's post against those who have and will shoot the former camp down for it.

Fair enough, no personal attacks. I was mostly exampling what a real insult would look like.

Dave, I agree wholeheartedly with your first point, which wasn't my question, but I'm not so sure about your second.

So, to the initial question "Are we still evolving?":

As long as someone is dying somewhere for some reason, whatsoever, and someone else is surviving for a different reason, we're evolving. Whether you think that they are surviving for "bad reasons" or not isn't of consequence. If you were an ancient bird, you might be critical of all the birds who "keep using their seed beaks like fish beaks, the damn fools!" The fact that you don't like big butts (which is a bold lie, you other brothers can't deny) doesn't mean it's a "negative" evolution.

There's no such thing as negative evolution. Evolution describes progress.

My opinion is that technology makes this whole argument largely obsolete.

Technology is part of our evolution. Finding new ways to care for the sick is another aspect of our evolution. It's helping us survive and procreate as a species. Whatever results, in the end, is part of our evolution. Technology does not supplant evolution. Our brains thinks and help make more evolution. Evolution describes what's happening. Evolution describes the process of what we are doing and who (or what processes and techniques of ours) are surviving.

Everything we are doing is an evolution. Evolution describes a process. The process it describes is what aspects of us are helping us survive. As long as we are surviving or dying for any reason--be it technology, lasers, the moon, whatthefuckever--we are evolving. The moment we aren't able to conduct a discussion about evolution due to being completely eradicated, we're no longer evolving and whatever future species that adapted from our efforts (through natural selection and adaptation) is evolving instead of us.
