Perhaps. It might have given more fight against the PS2. But I think it was the marketing that killed it off. The fact that SEGA was blowing off people by repeatedly selling new hardware (Mega CD, Saturn, 32X), by the time they sold the Dreamcast, nobody trusted them. So when the PS2 was rumoured, anybody who was interested went straight away. It made strong sales to begin with, and was very well recieved, but they got practically no sales around Christmas time, despite a shortage of PS2s...Chase wrote:
The Dreamcast was awesome yes, but was it too far ahead of its time? Was it released too long before the PS2? If they hadn't released it as early maybe it would have had a better chance. But against that you could say the same about Microsoft and the Xbox 360, but that became very successful.
Had they never released the CD, 32X or the Saturn, and just jumped straight to Dreamcast, maybe there'd be a forth (or fifth, counting PC) competitor in today's console "war"...
