Are you okay with gays?

Debate serious and interesting topics, rant about politics or pop culture, or otherwise converse in essay form about your opinions. The rules of conduct here are a little stricter.

i may have already stated this, but i see no reason to treat gays as being inferior in any way to heterosexuals. the physical realm is ephemeral and unimportant. the mental realm is all that really matters in the long run. so physical sexuality orientations, to me, mean next to nothing.

Yah I'm perfectly fine with gays. In fact their is someone that I go to tournaments with that is gay. After 5 months I didnt even know until he told me. At first I thought he was joking becasue he really didnt seem like he was gay. But yah we are still friends and their havent been any awkward moments.

I think some people think way to exreme of gays and think that they all talk in lisps or other stupid things like that. They are just like everybody else.

Okay, random anecdote.
So, I'm gay, and when I was a little kid, I couldn't pronounce ANY consonants. like, none at all. I went to a speech therapist for like 2 years, and I sounded kind of weird until I was like 8.

I wonder if there's a statistical correlation between speech impediments and sexual orientation? if so, it would be very interesting to neurologists, I reckon. It'd serve as further evidence that sexual orientation is predetermined (either genetically or during early development).

I don't think there is.
I mean, in all seriousness, I think the majority of homosexual men that talk with lisps are doing so because A) they feel like Spaniards speak the sexiest and so want to mimic them and B) they are trying to stand out with a verbal notice to everyone around them that they are gay.

I know and have met quite a few lesbians who speak just as distinctly as anybody else I know. In fact, I haven't heard of any lesbians who speak with a lisp. Maybe some of the butch ones try to speak in a lower voice to differentiate themselves, but overall I wouldn't think there would be a correlation between homosexuality and speech impediments. Far more straight people have speech impediments anyway. Or at least those who claim to be straight.

Also, I'm starting to take the thought that yungerkid may be in the realm of too many psychedelics. But hey, if you want to bitch me out, yungerkid, go ahead. I'm only speaking from experience. Be sure to PM me about it.

too many psychedelics? O_o with 5+ people remarking that same comment, maybe i'd better evaluate my diction.

anyway, i'm a Christian. and did you even get what i was trying to say? my point was that homosexuality does not affect the mental capacities of people. thus, homosexuals are still of value and an acceptable element of society. we should abide them.

@b_t: yes, sexual orientation is partly mental. but it does not affect a person's capacity for reason and individuality.

You know, the only reason that we start absurd arguments like this (both in day to day life, and on the forums) is because we are scared. It is human to be scared of what is different, and in America being gay is VERY different. Those of you who go out of your way to state that you are okay with gays are only showing how much you fear them, you fear them so much that you need to reassure yourself that they are fine. If you really are okay with gays you won't say anything, just let your actions get your point across.

Now personaly I find gayness a little creepy. I won't knee a gay in the crotch, but I won't befriend one, but that's just me.

we're not just stating our opinions. that's not the point of the debate thread. i personally am here to enrich my mind and open it to new ideas. we do not just state ideas, we prove them and share our reasons for our beliefs. so in real life, our actions should reflect the opinions we present here. we don't go around trumpeting our opinions vocally in real life; that would be absurd, as you say. but we are here not to just act, but to share our ideas and the reasons behind our actions. that's the point of the debate forum.

also, i personally am not afraid of gays. and i doubt that very many people here are. why does it even matter in the first place if we are afraid of anything? or are you implying that our arguments for or against toleration are based on fear over actual logic? if so, then perhaps you yourself would care to demonstrate some actual logic? maybe not. also, (on an unrelated note of course,) would you care to prove your statement that we who say we tolerate gays are actually afraid of them? can you maybe present statistics that would indicate that you are probably accurate?

Really?

Because Eternal Boredom, did you know that when you have a text-based discussion system it's a bit hard to measure the vocal inflection used when saying that you are okay with gays? Also, it's a bit hard to show that you're practicing what you preach on an internet forum. I'm going to use inductive reasoning to say this, but assuming that most of the people on here tell what is true about themselves most of the time then it would be logical to assume that many of the people on here either think they are okay with homosexuality or they know that they are okay with homosexuality. Fear has nothing to do with someone saying they accept others who are homosexual. You don't see white supremacists walking around saying they accept black people because they are afraid people will discover they are KKK/neo-nazi and shit.

Fear does have a bit to do with those who say they don't accept homosexuality. Why have I turned this around? Because the fact that you don't accept it probably comes from some fear of what you don't understand.

So you discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation? That's a pretty dick move because you act like you are just "tolerating gay people but god forbid they actually try and talk to me." Even if you don't agree with homosexuality for whatever reason does not give you any right to act as if they're second class citizens who don't deserve your friendship because you think they're creepy. And stop saying things like "a gay," because once again you are acting like homosexuals are some group of people who aren't quite human and whose only purpose in life is to seek you out and hit on you. Just because you know someone who is gay doesn't mean they're going to hit on you any more than the girl sitting next to you in math class who doesn't even know you. See Atilla's point earlier.

...

Now don't hold it against me, i don't judge them because of their sexuality, i judge the because of the way they act. I have known a very few amount of gays, two of which have caused my general phobia of them(yes i know it's irrational) if a gay person were to act like any other person i would be fine, but they seem to HAVE to go out of their way to flaunt around their sexuality through their behavior. Also, personaly, i knew a huge dick who was gay, so i associate gay people with him...

Another HUGE thing i despise is "oh, im gay you need to accept me for who i am." If he hadn't mentioned that i wouldn't have given a shit about his sexuality, but the mere fact that he needs to announce it is what annoys me.

I hate imprinting :/

It's fine if you don't like those gay people. Just don't let the actions of the few individuals you've known affect your attitude toward all gay people.

I feel like many of us are going to the opposite extreme here. There's a world of difference between the opinions of Eternal Boredom and Evil_Sire so let's try to recognize that. Eternal Boredom seems relatively open-minded and none of us are in any position to hold his life experiences against him.

I once knew a gay guy that punched a dude in the face. Can we really tolerate gay people if they go around punching dudes in the face? Sounds like they need to learn a lesson in tolerance, doesn't it?

lol

i want to bring up another topic involving gays: the three kinds

1. The gay who is ACTUALY gay
2. The prison gay (as in said person cannot get a girlfriend but is desperate to be in a relationship)
3. The "gay" who always hangs out with girls...

what do you think?

So... there are gays, sraight guys who screw guys, and guys... is that what you are saying?

Um...

------------------

On a serious note, you might say there are two kinds of gays;
1. Homosexuals
2. Queens

1. being a person who is attracted to a person or persons of the same sex.
2. being a person who purposely acts out the steriotype of homosexual men (see 'Lord Strutwell' for details), whatever their sexual orientation.

I can understand people disliking Queens, in the same way as they might dislike goths or emo's or any particular social grouping, but i cannot understand people who claim to hate homosexuals.

Simply, if nothing else, for the fact that they may well be friends with a homosexual and not know it.

Unless you are offended by homosexuality as an ideal, in which case you are simply a bigot.

Okay, let me clarify some things i have said

When i said the "gay" that always is with girls, i meant guys acting gay so girls will hang out with him. At my school there is a guy who claims to be bi-sexual, but he always is going out wiht girls...

Another point i believe i wanst clear on was: by saying that we are "okay" with gays, we actualy prove we arent.
This i can explain with an example; a person accuses you of being racist and you counter by saying "im not racist, i have lots of black friends"
That there is a classic example of racism, you are singling out your black friends for yourself.
Now apply this to gay people (sorry about the unrelated example, im in a hurry)

But it's true. I do have lots of black friends.
