2/6 doesnt equal 1/3 because it hasnt been simplified. Therefore, its not exactly the same. Whats more, I dont see a 2 or a 6 anywhere in 1/3, so obviously different numbers are used; again, they arent exactly the same even if they represent the same number. Its like saying 5463/9 is the same as 607, as it blatantly looks a lot different.

GTM, equality doesn't mean that things look the same or are the same thing; it means that they share the same numerical value. 2 + 2 = 4 is true, yet 2+2 and 4 are not exactly the same, they share the same mathematical meaning.

I am making the assumption that Kablizzy means 1/3 and 2/3 in the arithmetic sense. We must then comply with the axioms of mathematics, as has been explained before me, and conclude that they are, in fact, equal.

I do believe this can be proven more extensively via the lambda calculus, but I am not familiar enough with said calculus to show you all.

When you simplify an expression, by the definition of simplification, you do not change its value. Thus by stating that 2/6, simplified, is 1/3, you concede that 2/6 is equal to 1/3.

1/3 != 2/6 when you're typing. It takes a tad more brainpower to realize everything I wrote in the last paragraph, and there is some delay when you hit the keys. Boom, a few fractions of a cent from your internet bill, just wasted thinking. Frankly, I sometimes think even typing 1/3 is a waste of time and just write .333333333333 (and then some)
which saves not just lot more time than either, but it also saves keystrokes.

1/3 also != 2/6 when you are writing. At least you can write 2/6 in one stroke and say that you like cursive.

But mathematically, 1/3 does equal 2/6. And 3/9. And 4/12. And 5/15. And my thanksgiving turkey I had one midsummer morning how the hell did that get there? And 6/18. And x/3x as a general rule.

I assumed he wasn't talking about pure mathematics, but instead using real world principles.

For example, taking one apple out of three is not the same as taking two apples out of six. Same ratio but the actual result is different.
