If I may say so, these artists I approve of.
Jurassic 5
Tupac
N.E.R.D.
Kanye West
Gorillaz (Pop-Hip-Hop)

I know, all over the place, but they're good. Kanye West is debatable but his Graduation album is good.

You seriously can't dismiss a genre based on the mainstream acts, there is a great deal of lyricism in hip hop (yes, even in gangsta rap, albeit less so) and a great diversity in subject matter. Case in point, The Herd, my favourite Aussie hip hop group, with a strong focus on political and social commentary.

Talkback squawking hacks won't relax
Until Jones'y, Zemanek and Laws are all axed
77 percent of aussies are racist
And if you're here, I'll say it your faces
Rich redneck pricks still hold all the aces
So I'll buy ya a beer, with an arsenic chaser
Better off dead? is that what I've said?
Tempting to take for all the blood you've shed
No doubt your as bad as your dads and ya mums
Mainsteam media making me so f**king glum
Just anglo reality, intellectual cavities
Channel 9 fostering prejudiced mentalities
I won't be a casualty, just mention casually
That I can't stand for you shit-eating bullies
Preying on peeps without a mainstream voice
Most of you stay silent but I've got no choice

Dude. Fuck yeah. Yeah.

Gorillaz is pretty much the only rap/hiphop/pop i listen to. But that's okay, because they collaborate with a huge variety of other artists, such as MF Doom and De La Soul. That and their inherent awesomeness.

Gorillaz? Hip-Hop? Doesn't fit.

The most people who are disliking or hating Hip-Hop and Rap ONLY know gangster stuff. Here's just an example:

Stan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaixPM-XSkM
Lyrics: http://www.lyrics007.com/Eminem%20Lyric ... Lyrics.htm

I could name MANY other songs like that.

By the way, Eminem is my favorite Rapper. I've got every album.

I hear that hip-hop is in a state of 9-1-1.
Eminem told me.

but I'm not going to refuse to listen to something because the lyrics are dumb.
Isnt that a pretty good reason to refuse to listen to something?

I like some, dislike some. I was a huge eminem fan for a long time, though that probably counts against my liking rap. I havnt heard as much rap and hip-hop as i would like, but i have heard some really really good stuff. And some really really shit stuff.

Like most genres, then.

@Tsukatu; with that news in mind, are you going to consider getting down to buisness?

when i listen to music, i judge it based on the amount of creativity that goes into songwriting. seeing as most rap has generic or extremely uncreative supporting instrumental pieces, it's really down to the lyrical content for me. i think that a quality rap song should have creative rhymes, contain a well thought out story or message, and a specific and unique atmosphere. to me, it's all about the words.

the only three rap songs that i like are 1. Boyz in the Hood by Easy-E, 2. Got High by Afroman, 3. LAX by Xzibit. these three songs demonstrate a superior mastery of the english language as well as an ability to construct an intriguing setting for their stories. i would recommend them. i just haven't heard much quality rap. there's not that much creativity in the rap scene nowadays.

Actually, I think it was Bob Dylan who is credited with creating the first R+B song.

I don't really care for the stuff or what it stands for/promotes. I don't know how many of you guys live in what would be considered an inner-city area, but it's the kind of culture that 's around me all the time, and it's both discouraging and sometimes frightening. I think that people who have grown up listening to this, paired with poor parenting, poverty, and limited opportunities truly think that the message in the lyrics is the way things really work. The romanticization(sp?) of the thug.

This is in no way to be construed as bigotry, it applies to any race.

I can usually care less bout the lyrics, usually anything with a good beat is what I listen to. I find Jurassic 5 very, uh, pleasing to listen to. In concerns with the rap culture, I find it generally annoying.

I've listened to your recommendations for new music before and I've always been disappointed. -_-

On the subject of Eminem, he is the best selling rapper of all time, so you have to argue that he is doing something right. I used to be a very big fan, but then I grew up a little.

Maybe you just need to open your ears a little more and accept more forms of music! :P
But to each their own. I'm not familiar with most of the bands you listen to, so that probably makes it a bit harder for me to suggest new music for ya, wedgie.

And I've come to the conclusion fairly recently that a lot of the music I listen to requires an
acquired taste.

even though i would much rather listen to metal, rock and alternative music, i like to keep an open mind on everything including rap but lately i have gone off it so much because of the attitudes of the artists and the people following it.

at my school, loads of people get stick for listening to metal and rock because these rap followers prefer rap. just because they prefer rap, doesnt mean they can enforce their opinions on others, i dont have a problem with rap at all, i find SOME (not all) of the lyrics are meaningless because theyre just about sex, prostitues, drugs, gangster life etc, but i dont mind some of it.

i think it would be a much better genre if the fans just listened to it without forcing their opinions on others and talking shit about my music.

though i do understand that not all people who listen to rap/hip hop are like this, the majority that ive met, most certainly are.

that was long. :P

The genre itself is no better or worse because of the people involved. The genre is better or worse based on the actual music. Since everyone is going to have differing opinions on that, there's no way you can say "this is a bad genre" or "this is a much better genre", etc. Personally, I hate rap, but I can understand why some people like it.
Tsukatu wrote:If you were to tell the general American public in the 70's that disco was flippin' retarded, not a whole lot of people would listen then, but decades later it's an embarrassing part of the history of our culture.
I think we might have a similar sort of situation here.
Seconded; you can look at some genres, such as jazz or rock, and people still listen to them today. No one (except Ermac :P) listens to disco today. I really doubt that in 2030 the next generation is going to be listening to rap.
