No, it's not an issue of "sounding stupid." You can make a lot of true things sound stupid, but that doesn't make them any less correct. It wouldn't do good to convince someone if it sounds stupid, of course, but a fact doesn't change just because someone says it funny.
For example, there's, like, this stuff that's in everything, and, like, it moves really fast and stuff, and it all has this counterpart that's also in everything, and the two really don't like each other... but if you were to put them, like, so they're all separated and stuff, and you put a wire between them, the first stuff will start, like, bouncing all hella crazy in the wire, and that powers your plasma TV.

The problem with "God loves you" is that it's an appeal entirely to emotion. It's normally only used when all attempts at reasoning have utterly failed, and Christians (because for the most part they don't have any reason to back them up) have gotten really good at the appeal to emotion. But the fact of the matter is that feeling really sorry or happy is no reason whatsoever that one should be convinced that anything is true.
