Are you okay with gays?

Debate serious and interesting topics, rant about politics or pop culture, or otherwise converse in essay form about your opinions. The rules of conduct here are a little stricter.

Very interesting how a topic about gay tolerance transitioned into appreciation for Mexican food in both theory and physical manifestation.

But while we're on this detour, I like mexican food. In theory as well.

Gforce wrote:Honestly, I'm not sure what to believe about gays. Being a Christian, I certainly believe that God is against gays... what I don't understand is why. Most rules given in the Bible can be reasonable from even an atheist's view (most rules are there because doing something would hurt someone else). However, homosexuality is not one of those rules. The only reason I could see for God saying no to being gay is because it focuses sexuality on pleasure, rather than procreation. Conversely, I don't believe that God wants us to be restricted of all sexual pleasure, namely in married couples. Therefore gays should be able to marry and enjoy each other, right? But no... the verses conflict. It's a topic which I'm very unsure about.
I find that banning gay marriage rights because of 'religion' is EXTREMELY (I empahsize extremely) stupid. I mean, who gives a crap if two people are getting married if you don't even know em. Just like that episode of family guy and lois has a social epiphany about gay marriage.

In short, I'm ok with gays. There pretty smart people and can light up any room.

Also back on Page 5, particularly Tsukatu's list of verses:

Deuteronomy 21:18-21- If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

I suppose we're supposed to obey this rule as well? What about almost all the other rules from Deuteronomy that 100% of Christians do not follow?

I don't recall whether this was already brought up on an earlier page of the topic, but it is generally believed that Christians don't need to follow all of the Old Testament laws because most of them were only intended to be temporary measures. God mellowed out a bit when Jesus landed on Earth and set up the new covenant with more love and less vengeance than Moses's laws.

Straight up: I am prejudiced against gays. Why? Because my mind has been programmed that it is "right" to see a man with a woman, therefore to see a man with a man (/ woman with woman) must be "wrong." Of course, the way I think has no bearing on what the truth actually is, but it has a lot to do with how I see the way the truth actually is.

Now, that doesn't mean I don't agree with gay marriage, the right for them to love, etc. etc. I'm all for that, because, even taking a very selfish look at the issue, I don't want to spend my life with a lesbian woman who thinks she has to "hide it," when I could spend my life with a woman who loved me, too.
(Sure, there's the whole thing about rights, which is fine, but my reason hits closer to my heart than "like, world peace and stuff," which is why I use it to defend my position)

It's not prejudice that is bad, it's acting or speaking on prejudice that is bad. So when people say they're okay with gays, I don't assume they aren't prejudiced, I just assume that they can keep their feelings under control, and they can tolerate them in the same way you tolerate someone who is disabled.
EDIT: I realize tolerate has some negative connotations, those were not intended.

To the people who say they don't want their kid being dragged up the isle by a man, I say that I'd rather that than up the isle with a woman he hates.
To the people who say that they don't want to see that kind of thing (in their daily lives), I ask when the last time you walked down the street and saw a couple having sex was.
To the people who bring up religion, I say then kick them out of your churches.

In short, I respect being gay as something like being Jewish. You can be Jewish. I think you're wrong, I wish you wouldn't be, but if being Jewish makes you happier than pretending to not be Jewish, then I respect that. Of course, even that's a bad analogy, you can change religions, but I use that as opposed to "black" because in .0001 second of looking at you, I can tell that you're black. Not the case with gay/Jew, unless you're stereotypical, but that's a different issue entirely.

I wouldn't think a "yuck" reaction would be appropriate, although I think being a little uncomfortable is ok when you first find out. But seriously, people don't choose to be gay. Try to place yourself in their shoes.

That image is a graph of the results of an Implicit Association Test on sexual orientation across 270,000 people. The IAT basically evaluates your automatic, subconscious biases. The right side represents implicit bias towards heterosexuals, while the left side is implicit bias towards homosexuals. The middle (white) is little/no preference. I was evaluated as little/no preference. You can take the test yourself at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/d ... atest.html (click "Sexuality IAT") (The questions it asks you on the Questionnaire Task are used by the researchers to study both implicit associations in general and the accuracy of their tests. Answers are confidential.)

Your data suggests: Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for Straight People compared to Gay People.
So, what does this mean? Am I slightly homophobic or am I just slightly susceptible to Freudian slips? Also, I think I'm in the white bars, right? Should I be sitting my parents down at this point? I'm so confused, Jean-Luc, about everything. Please don't take advantage.
