Do/would you give money to homeless persons/beggars?

I usually don't give money, but offer them food (if I have any), or offer to buy them something.

I buy homeless people food quite regularily, and like to give them things to read. Of course, they generally don't know me because I do it while they're asleep/ not there. Otherwise they may get suspicious of the boy wearing bright stripy pants and a pink hoodie.
