Isn't he going against Tanner for saying that there's nothing to hate about in each genre of music?

Out of curiosity, did you go to a school where the majority of your friends and/or peers listened to grunge/britpop/metal? That's the problem I had when I was about 13-16. It wasn't until I left Grade 10 to go to college until I finally started branching out with my music tastes.brighter wrote:Without wanting to condescend, it might be an age thing. When I was first big into music, around 15-16 or so, I couldn't stand the thought of going anywhere near a dance record, let alone appreciating one. Same went for hip-hop, rap, classical, classic rock, and so on.... If it wasn't grunge, britpop, or metal, I didn't want to know. And I'd tell anyone who was unfortunate enough to attempt to expand my horizons.
I thought I was cool. I wasn't that cool.
Rap and hip hop were the only two kinds of music I ever listened to really, but it was the only kind of music and culture that the majority of people at my school were willing to accept for the most part. I only listened to bands like Queen or Soundgarden when I was around my family, and even then I pushed it away for some idea that rap/hip hop was better in a way.
What I really tend to hate about music is when things become too formulated. As of now, my current dislike with mainstream rap/hip hop is that to me everything seems to have a deep bass drum, heavy bass guitar (rarely venturing out of its 1-4-5 chord structure), and a synth of some sort (we can thank L'il John for this). I appreciate artists like Zion I and Immortal Technique for being true to their music by talking about personal life struggles and their political views without submitting to the formula of mainstream hip hop; without glorifying power by belittling people. If they discuss power through belittling people they aren't promoting it but rather trying to point out why that way to power is wrong.
And the thing I hate the most? A handful of mainstream rap artists have been quoted saying that they would love to change their music, to create music for their kids or their family or their friends, or to highlight issues in the world that they want to make a point out of, but that they "can't" because that's not what sells, or because their record label won't allow it, or whatever they are bound to do by contract or money. Nobody in the mainstream is willing to change the mainstream, and so it has become a very dull, boring genre of music.
Before anybody says, "Wait, listen to this guy who is /outside/ of the mainstream," I am very persnickety when it comes to underground or independent hip hop artists. The whole genre seems to have removed itself from its roots and turned itself upside-down.
Country music falls along the same lines of being far too formulated for me to get any appreciation out of listening to it. I can't tell the difference between most country music artists.
As for anything else, I take it on a song-by-song or album-by-album basis. Either I like it or I don't. Just those two genres stated above I have the most difficulty finding anything I like within them.

That's cool, dude. But you should be posting that over in Multimedia. This doesn't really suit debate.

Kind of. Most of our school were into mainstream stuff, and I received quite a lot of flack for my musical tastes. Went as far as having my CD snapped by the resident thugs when I tried to play my music in the common room. Fine times.Manus Australis wrote: Out of curiosity, did you go to a school where the majority of your friends and/or peers listened to grunge/britpop/metal? It was mostly a reaction to that kind of bullshit, I think. Anything that was outside of my preference was liked by some dick or another. A silly connection to make, but I can see why I did it.

Generally when I say something to the like, it'll be more specific. For instance 'I hate today's mainstream rap', there is some rap I don't mind, but it isn't anything that would be considered popular.

Hope you guys don't mind if I bring up a new topic, but what was your first real experience with music, and do you think it had a lasting impression on what your tastes ran to later on?
I remember when I was about 7 or 8, a relative got me a CD player for my birthday. My parents aren't music people at all, and my friends weren't all that interested in music either. In fact, I don't think we even owned any CDs, apart from The Lion King soundtrack if I remember right. So I went to the mall one day pretty much the musical equivalent of a blank slate. I ended up buying Dookie, because I found the album name funny and green is my favorite color. I also picked up a Goldfinger CD, because I liked the movie. This led to my love of ska and punk music (I guess Green Day is pop-punk or whatever but that's beside the point.) Nowadays I'm not so into those types of music, but I still enjoy the occasional listen.

By the time I was four, I had listened to Rubber Soul about a thousand times. My parents were bigtime hippies. This explains a lot about me.toasters wrote:Hope you guys don't mind if I bring up a new topic, but what was your first real experience with music, and do you think it had a lasting impression on what your tastes ran to later on?

Allstar, by Smashmouth. I'm now a big rock/metal guy, so I'd say not on the second part of your question.toasters wrote:Hope you guys don't mind if I bring up a new topic, but what was your first real experience with music, and do you think it had a lasting impression on what your tastes ran to later on?

Meteora - Linkin Park
Stadium Arcadium - RHCP
S.C.I.E.N.C.E. - Incubus
*I actually knew nothing about these artists and just got the albums because they were on sale. They pretty set my direction of music preference.

Smash Mouth's Astro Lounge album, when I was about eight or something. Hey, I still love that album now :Dtoasters wrote:Hope you guys don't mind if I bring up a new topic, but what was your first real experience with music, and do you think it had a lasting impression on what your tastes ran to later on?
Then my dad bought a Kiss cd so at the time the only two bands I knew were Smash Mouth and Kiss, what a combination :P
When I really got into music, Rise Against was the first band I followed and they definately influenced my tastes.

People seemed to like music they heard growing up. The first two bands I listened to were the Chili Peppers and Ozzy, and I heard Nirvana and sometimes Metallica on the radio.
Thing is, most kids these days don't even know who those people are.
The only rap/hip-hop I have enjoyed listening to is the Beastie Boys, but that's about it. A lot of music these days is garbage; I mean, who makes a song about cranking a car(Soulja Boy)?

RHCP? Yes. I've had plenty of people think I'm nuts for listening to metallica though. There are those select few music enthusiasts around who know what's what, but must of our generation would be like 'Nirvanwho?' (around here anyway)SlappyMcGee wrote:Wait. Well, most kids at MY school wouldn't know anything about them. Probably ~10-15 people tops out of ~400 like metal, maybe about 30-40 with rock.

Maybe it`s just french Canada, but Amy Winehouse is more ambiguous than Ozzy.

No one at my school really likes them...except for my teacher...?
My friend asked my if I listened to "Soulja Boy" and I said "No, I listen to real music." and he laughed. ._.
