What I think is that a spark of electricity from faulty wires jumped into the gas tube leading to the central tank. This caused a short circuit, lighting the gas fumes, and blowing a hole into the side of the plane. A fracture went around the whole cockpit, causing it to break off, dooming the plane.
Some say that a missile from a U.S. Navy boat accidentally shot down the 747. This evidence has been discounted for two reasons:
1) No missile residue was ever found on or near the plane
2) The actual missiles fired were over 50 miles south of where the plane went down.
For the same first reason, a terrorist attack is also out of the question.
You decide.

when have conspiracy theories ever proven to be true? Are conspiracy theories allowed in the Debate forum?
i think it is highly unlikely that the navy shot down this plane, from your original post only (i had not heard of this incident). the navy is too well organized for that to happen, in my opinion.

Remember the time the Air Force flew a bunch of nuclear materials across the entire US en route to Minnesota or something--by accident?yungerkid wrote:i think it is highly unlikely that the navy shot down this plane, from your original post only (i had not heard of this incident). the navy is too well organized for that to happen, in my opinion.

I don't understand the question. You've given us a reasonable and logical explanation for something happening, and a reasonable and logical explanation for why a theory that some people (Who?) have is incorrect. You haven't posed any question, you've stated merely the facts of the issue. The only way something like this could get going is if the person who started the topic, or, coincidentally, somebody on the forums who frequents debate, was of the opposing theoretical side. As it stands, all we know about the case is what you've told us, and it sounds like the facts are reasonable and logical.

Well, to spark something, can you link to some articles advocating both sides of the argument?Mustardude wrote:

It seems like the OP presents only one side. "Some people say it was a missile, but it turns out all of the evidence points against that!"
It seems pretty clean-cut to me, then.

I'm not really interested in the topic, and I doubt there are many users here who knows about planes and could enter the discussion. Anyway, here are some articles about it:

Actually, it's just people trying to prove that a missile hit the plane.EdoI wrote:I'm not really interested in the topic, and I doubt there are many users here who knows about planes and could enter the discussion. Anyway, here are some articles about it:

After reading some material on it, I'm still unconvinced that it was anything besides mechanical failure. It seems like there are too many theories with little support, and the missile theory, which is the best that makes sense and is more interestand than mechanical failure, really seems to have all the evidence stacked against it.

Why did a topic about a plane accident 13 years ago get started?
