Smoking, Opinions on

Well, I was just wondering what all of your thoughts on smoking were.

I was offered a cigarette today from some upperclassmen, and I said, Oh, what the hell. I smoked it, and it tasted, um, well, strange. The buzz associated with it was nice, but I don't think that I'll start smoking. The reasons being that the buzz isn't worth the price and lung cancer.

Overall, I respect the choice that people make, and people who are adamantly against any smoking are being retarded, because smoking is a personal choice.

I can't fathom smoking. After having lived in a house with two smokers for a quarter of a century, I can say with no lost confidence that smoking is *the* most retarded pastime that anyone can take up. I get the social aspect, kinda. It's something that people do socially. Wooo, good for them. I always went out on smoke breaks with all the smokers and did the same shit they did, except I burned dollar bills while they smoked. Same relative effect, too.

... okay?

I have a lot of smoker friends. I don't... have a problem with it, in that I don't need to complain about being downwind or whatever. I'm never gonna take up smoking myself, for reasons which *shrug* I don't even know. Never found any reason to. I suppose it's on principle.

My point was that the price wasn't worth it. It also causes lung cancer, so definitely not.

Horrible. One of the worst habits you can get into.

Right, but my habit is funny and doesn't kill me.

I said that one of the main reasons why I wouldn't smoke is that is too expensive for my current budget. Burning dollar bills is expensive and a felony, but who cares about the felony? It's just expensive.

I'm not condoning or promoting smoking, I just wanted to hear your guys opinions on it.
Plus, Blizz, after I thought about it, yes, that would be pretty funny!

Wait, what? That's a stupid law. Does the government own all the money in the country? What's stopping them from just taking it if they want?

Smoking is like refusing to bathe, by which I mean it smells awful and is potentially damaging to your health. Except that being unwashed doesn't require you to spend ridiculous amounts of money. Now, if people want to smoke in the privacy of their own homes, that's their decision... but I'd rather they not do so anywhere near me, particularly given that most of my family is allergic to cigarette smoke.
Wait, what? <Outlawing the destruction of money is> a stupid law. Does the government own all the money in the country? What's stopping them from just taking it if they want?
As I understand it, it's because the value of currency, inflation and so forth depend upon the amount of money in circulation. Thus the destruction of sufficient quantities of money could potentially be used to manipulate or unbalance the economy.

What? Does the government own all of the dollar bills? Just because they printed, distributed, and spend lots of taxpayer money every year maintaining their value and circulation?

[/irony]

The government owns printed money. If the government can't enforce that its printed money isn't destroyed, then it will stop printing money. People would be back to bartering. As a nation, we're all better off that the government makes trade extremely simple, cheap, and convenient for us to do. All we must do is not destroy the dollar bills and coinage that the government prints to help us keep track of our worth. Is that so much to ask?

Huh...I'd just always assumed you owned it. :/

Do you at least 'own' the value of it, ignoring the issues around owning an intangible concept. I hate the idea that the government can just take it back if they wish, without having to reimburse at all.

Smoking became uncool before I hit the age when most people used to start :)

I have a cigarette with a beer on the rare occasion, perhaps 1-2 times a month at the very most. It's a nice combination, but I've never let it become a habit.

Pshht, I've quit smoking so many times over the years... shit is trivial.
Matter of fact, I just had a few cigarettes tonight with a bunch of friends at a bar. I've at least been successful enough in my quitting attempts that I've only ever had cigarettes in highly social situations in which I'm meaningfully intoxicated, and never besides for the last almost-year.
Tuesday nights, yo. Live 'em UP.

Funny you'd mention this. I smoke, too, at parties, sometimes. I just don't find the practice addictive. I get a good nicotine high walking through bars for the evening. I think there's a certain type of behavior that makes the already-addicting aspects of nicotine moreso. I think most people should be able to overwhelm the urge to use the chemical.

Booze, on the other hand, is irresistible.

I don't smoke either,as it's just a nastyhabit and the smell your left with is the same, giving you the only chance with a GF who also smokes therefore can't smell or taste anyways

And harsher laws should be put into effect to keep people from being forced into second hand smoking... I see a bunch of kids smoking before school everyday

I smoke shisha through my hookah whenever I can find someone else who wants to do it with me. I really rarely use it to smoke tobacco, though. The shisha that I use is tobacco-free, nicotine-free and tar-free. The ingredients are printed on the package and it's literally molasses and apples. I'm still inhaling smoke and I'm not ignorant to that fact but, I mean, I sure don't want to live forever.

Oh, I should mention that I do smoke shisha on occasion. Isn't it more harmful than tobacco, or something? I don't understand my own principles either.
