Seriously.

I don't think there is an appropriate way to restrain ignorant people from making generalized statements about other cultures and religions without infringing on the public's right to say what they want.

Why is it assumed that the public have a right to say whatever they want? That is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard. I severely doubt that it is true (defamation surely is illegal in the states!), and if it is, then that seriously needs amending.

Because unless your talking about breaking a law or something then the 1st amendment has got you covered...

Whatever newspaper Reagan got those words from, however, is pretty spot on. It's amazing how you can use the term "liberty" to sell any proposition whatsoever to Americans, even a curtailment of rights in order to protect an idea. It's important to preserve the liberties of your nation by fighting legislation. It's also important to divorce legistators and Presidential administrators from the President himself--but I doubt anyone will ever do that, ever.

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring in saying that the deprivation of inherent freedoms is kind of the Democrat's modus operandi.

It's times like these that I'm glad I live in Canada. At least when our rights are taken away we don't throw a tantrum.

This is obviously disappointing, but I don't think all is lost. The limitations on free speech apply only to racism and religious discrimination, specifically in the form of stereotyping. Depending on how broadly interpreted this limitation becomes, we might have a problem, but the fact remains that it's not like he's making criticism of the government illegal or something. I also doubt that that's coming at any point in the near future.
You are still free to make informed criticisms of race and religion, so long as you don't stereotype. I'm not seeing how this is so catastrophic.

I think it is because those greedy Jews want money. I am Jewish, can i stereotype my own religion or is that illegal?

I'd be taking the news harder if my expectations for competence from people in power hasn't been dwindling so much over the years.

Unfortunately, no. It's not smart for him to say things like that but it's legal.

Although, there's nothing innately wrong with cracking down on stereotypes of religion. That's a problem created by having no religion of state - stereotypes hurt people in the same country as you.
