Hip-hop
I was watching MTV last night, and this hip-hop awards thing came on presented by flavor flave (who must be the funniest man on earth), and then a load of fatties and chavs walked on and started to murmur crap about sex, whores, and guns, and I just thought, 'what a load of shit', then I listened carefully to it and realized that they were actually fantasizing about it!
I listen to Jay-Z, because I like the beats and it's good stuff, I don't particularly like the lyrics, but he isn't glorifying street life, because he's been there and he's seen what a shit hole it's like. I hate these people who glorify it, because they haven't seen what it's like, they're just influencing pathetic kids.
My parents think hip-hop is what makes the streets full of crime and homeless kids (in England anyway), I think they're part right, part wrong, because I listen to /some/ rap, and it's actually OK.
Discuss.

All Im saying is theres a big difference between rap, hip hop and R'n'B. That and alternative rock beats all of them :P

Rock?
ROCK?!!?!!
R&B beats alternative rock by a mile.
And saying that, that heads high song on Saints Row 2 OWNS YOU ALL.

Its a matter of perspective, lets leave it at that. :)
That said, this is going to lead to some interesting arguments...

I like old school hip-hop like Jurassic 5, Soul Position, DJ Shadow, RJD2, Blue Scholars etc. Basically hip-hop that doesn't talk abut guns, bling and bitches like gangster rap.

Although still not quite my style of music (I prefer rock/metal), I'd much rather listen to that then the newer crap.wedgie wrote:I like old school hip-hop like Jurassic 5, Soul Position, DJ Shadow, RJD2, Blue Scholars etc. Basically hip-hop that doesn't talk abut guns, bling and bitches like gangster rap.

I listen to hip hop, but as bad as the lyrics get, I don't take them to influence my actions. I prefer being myself, rather than trying to live the life of a gangster.

If you were to tell the general American public in the 70's that disco was flippin' retarded, not a whole lot of people would listen then, but decades later it's an embarrassing part of the history of our culture.
I think we might have a similar sort of situation here.

I like music that sounds good. Some "gangster rap" sounds good. Bone Thugs N Harmony and old school Dr. Dre come to mind. Most of the rap/hip-hop I listen to is not gangster rap, but I'm not going to refuse to listen to something because the lyrics are dumb. I prefer higher quality rap like Jay-Z, Atmosphere, MF Doom, or Blue Scholars.
Where would Cypress Hill fit into all of this? And come to think of it, not every Bone Thugs song is about gang violence or drugs, just the vast majority.

...I suppose I'm sort of obliged to say this. The only rap that I really enjoy to some extent is Common, but I don't give that very much of a listen anymore. I think what I like most about rap is the rhythm and flow involved. I'm not as much into the lyrical content or electronic background effects. Come to think of it, a track with a guy rapping and no beat would be kinda interesting. But I digress; just like anything, some of hip-hop is good, and most of it is not.Techno wrote:Now I'm waiting for Skyline's post.

I'm not convinced that the gangsta rap craze can last much longer, it's reached the level of pompous ridiculousness of 80's hair metal and the time is ripe for a a grunge style backlash. The misogyny, homophobia and pathetic braggadocio that is so prevalent in gangsta rap can be off putting, although I do still enjoy Jay-Z and some Biggie.
Of course, not all rap is gangsta rap and I find most of my favourites here, MF Doom (and aliases), Company Flow, Aesop Rock, Anti Pop Consortium, The Roots (somewhat gangsta), Lupe Fiasco, Public Enemy etc. As well as Aussie hip hop acts, TZU and The Herd.
And to back up GTM, the difference between rap and hip hop is that hip hop encompasses an entire urban culture, including MCing, DJing and Graffiti. Rap is just an aspect of hip hop.

I don't think we've really embraced hip hop culture much here in Australia, especially not in the west, but there's a few good aussie acts I occasionally listen to.

I, for one, think hiphop is total bullcrap.
Some rap is good (only Beastie Boys)

Come to think of it, the way rap is performed and the way people used to dance to disco have quite a few similarities.Tsukatu wrote:If you were to tell the general American public in the 70's that disco was flippin' retarded, not a whole lot of people would listen then, but decades later it's an embarrassing part of the history of our culture.

did somebody say gangsta rap?
ah, MC lars. what an interesting artist.Phrase about my gun, rhyme about my loot
Phrase about these haters I sometimes have to shoot
Rhyme about my clothes,
props to my hometown (Carmel Valley!)
Lyrics that say nothing - cause that's how we get down
Phrase about my clique, don't step to me punk
Gratuitous rhyme about keeping it crunk
Bigots to our genre, we do it our own way
It's just too bad our songs don't have anything to say!

The lyrics to a lot of rap I've heard is just terrible. I don't mind as much if the music is good, however, most of the time it's just repetitive beats with no complexities.

Pretty much how I feel about it too. It isn't that I can't appreciate the music itself, but come on. I don't really get how someone can have the dignity to rap the same line of lyrics over and over again... and again.George wrote:Ahahahaha!PALEMOON wrote:did somebody say gangsta rap?
