More like "i'm using an idiot operating system and not managing my memory". Cold start to firefox in 32 seconds on a pentium M, baby.

Point holds then. That's gotta suck though. I'm assuming you can't rip out the shell and whatnot then to cut down on memory usage?..

Cold start is 7-8 seconds for me. It's Firefox 4.0preb7, I dunno exactly how much faster it is than 3.x, so uh.

Even if I knew what the hell you were talking about, probably not.

Start up from shutdown takes a few minutes. No joke.

My idea was to post a pic of all my gadgets on, but I still haven't managed to get my workstation to look good, and I dunno where the camera is so basically, I have the same wallpaper on my desktop, netbook, Zen V and PSP. Looks pretty good.
Image
Have a new folder called Organizer that is basically a dropbox-synced folder. The downloads and "the nederlands ..." folders are there because utorrent is currently uploading stuff from there, so i can't really take them out of there. Except for the Music folder, the netbook desktop looks pretty much like this one in every way, except the taskbar is on top and the screen is smaller.
Image
My Firefox looks pretty amazing now. Except I dislike having the refresh button inside the adressbar. Yes, I know I can take it out of there and put it elsewhere, but I want the refresh/stop button to be on the right of the adressbar - just not inside it.
foobar is much more usable now and looks good enough. It still isn't perfect though ;_;

I meant replace the standard "explorer" shell with something a lot more lightweight, like bblean or litestep or whatever. It's kind of a massive PITA on windows.

Start up from shutdown is what I meant by "cold start", and yeah, that's really common with windows. Even in a relatively new install of 7 on my box I find myself getting frustrated at silly load times. Whatever it's putting into memory, it's not necessary for a working operating system <_<

Nice wallpaper, techno.

Oh man. I tried litestep a while back. Most confusing thing I've ever done on my computer.

Something tells me you'd hate using the non-mainstream linux distros then :P The only problem I have with litestep is that the standards for skinning are all over the place (at least they were a few years ago).

Nothing wrong with it from your average end-user's perspective though. I only use Arch because I like to have a little more verbose control over my system, and can't really afford the bloat of the more "complete" distros, so barebones is the way to go.

So get a dock, or a dedicated desktop icons program. UNIX mentality, cmon. It's not like you actually need a handful of symlinks (or shortcuts, or whatever) sitting behind all your programs at any one time. I prefer the litestep/*box approach of replacing all those icons with a menu (similar to the windows and gnome start menus) that you bring up with a right click, though I've got nothing against flashy docks either. It just seems so goddamn boring to have all those static icons :/ [/rant]
