Why is N so addicting?

Talk about the classic version of Metanet Software's amazingly popular freeware platformer right here!

i really like n game, but one day i stopped to think WHY? Why is n game so fun to play? What is in the game that makes it the only thing I tend to do on the computer (besides homework)?

the reason I like it seems to be that the controls only have three buttons. Sure, other games with 20 buttons to keep track of are fun, but sometimes they can get confusing.

another reason is that n game tends to be a dodging game. I like the fact that the only goal is to get to the door when its open. Also the AGD's but thats another story.

WHat are your reasons that you like n game?

Topic corrected. It's N, not N Game. ;)

I know for sure I wouldn't still be playing N if it wasn't for NED and this community. They are the two reasons which make it addicting for me.

I think it's the five maps per square, squares arranged in columns format. They act as save points so that nothing gets too tedious. Plus Mare and Raigan were damn good mappers.

I don't find n game addictive. N, on the other hand, I love for the same reason as l_d.

I'm only around these days because of this community. My interest in N has been prolonged by the various activities and events at the forums and IRC.

It's odd how most say community keeps them around - I think we've all gone through phases; Some are still discovering N for the first time, some are still discovering Ned or NUMA for the first time, some are getting into Map-Packs and collabs, some are discovering the IRC, some discovering Vent. Us ancient fellas, however, seem to have drifted *away* from the community, and now just keep in touch as people. It's an incredibly strange cycle, but one that I think every community ends up going through.

Well, when I was mainly in to playing N, I played it because it was...addicting. I would play the levels just so that I could beat the game, and the fact is, the more I failed at a level, the more encouraged I was to continue on to beat the game.

As for mapping, I got more into mapping when I joined NUMA and the N community, as many have already said. :)

I've stuck around for the highscoring. I get a sense of accomplishment knowing that I can complete a level in the 20th fastest time or less, ever, for anybody in the world.

But you do have to factor in the fact that there are only so many N high scorers out there. But it's a good perspective to view your achievements.

While it is true that there is a limited amount of highscorers, there are a lot more people who have played/beaten N. I thought I remembered a thread from the old forums that asked how many people had beaten N, so I did a quick search. This is what I found (and it looks like you started the thread, George):
tktktk in Sep 2006 wrote:just over 500,000 people have downloaded N. The problem is that it's impossible to know what percentage of people actually beat it. If you figure that maybe 1 in every 100 people that download it end up beating it, that comes out to roughly 5000. If you figure 1 in every 500, the number goes down to 1000. So it's probably somewhere within that range.
That was about 2 1/2 years ago, and I'm willing to say that the number of people who have beaten N has probably doubled, especially with the added exposure from N+. So, using tk's lower estimate, that means there's been 2000 people who have beaten N. Getting a top 20 therefore means that you're in the top 1% of everybody who has ever completed the level. Talk about levels in the first column, and the number of people who have completed those is much higher, putting you at an even higher percentile rank. So, viewing it in that light really makes it impressive, in my mind.

And, I have also stuck around for the community. They have certainly made my stay here more enjoyable. And not to minimize anybody here, but I especially like the highscoring community. It gives me instant competition via IRC, and input on how I might be able to improve.

Because:

*You can make your own levels and play it,
*Submit it to NUMA,
*İt's so simple,
*You've bragging rights when you beat it,
*Very frustrating but somehow fun,
*And you can play other peoples map and rate it.

That's quite good for a freeware game I think.

Actually, since the .sol disaster happened to me (I beat 90 episodes and my computer broke so I had to do it again), I'm not playing N with the passion I used to have. I still love it, though!
I also feel kind of dedicated to the game after over a year of playing, and I'll know I'll beat it... once.

But yeah, the community is what keeps me mostly to it.

Haha, Inspired, I had to look back and see what I had said before. I do still remember looking up that thread. Fun times...

I still feel the same way about it, being able to say that I have one of the best times on a level/episode out of so many times that its been completed.
