I wouldn't call it flawless, I can see a few omissions I've made that I'd like to correct.

I'll be adding to/editing this a little over time.

And thanks again for the feedback.

From the prior debate, I have a suggestion to add to this guide? Inspiration is an important factor as well (not the same as personal style imo) so perhaps you should put the effects of inspiration and lack of on maps, and where to source of ideas, just as a general reference here? Imo it would be a good addition, and I know I'd try and apply it to my maps.

I already cover this to a degree in [007] when I suggest taking aspects from the world around you instead of just from other n maps.

Inspiration is inherent to a successful style, the birth and the continued evolution of.

All there is to say on the matter is make sure you take your inspiration from as many sources as possible.

I agree with 1. I beg to differ on 2. I think it would be helpful to provide examples of utilizing different sources of inspiration and suggesting sources to mappers they may not have thought of before. I have some ideas on the subject, and would love to contribute a bit by writing a mini-guide on it. I think it could be useful. If enough people agree, I would certainly write a bit on inspiration for mapping.

All I can imagine is a guide where you point at things and say: "Hey, you could take inspiration from here, here, or here...". I guess presenting actual examples can be a whole lot more effective than just stating the obvious though, so a guide on this would be great if you could find a way to put it just right. If you can do something with that I'd love to read it.

I was basically planning on talking about what was behind some of my maps (obviously I can only speak from my own experience, but I think there's enough material there), and using them to generalize some common sources of inspiration such as music, images/the real world, and other forms. I can think of at least 5 or so forms that I would discuss, and I may find more as I go along.

It seems that there's going to be a fair few guides created/submitted in the near future and because i've got one in progress at the moment, i'm worried that i'll mess someone else up or something. What's the general attitude toward there being a few guides floating around? Would it be better for me to wait a while, or do the people currently working on guides not mind at all? I'm thinking mainly of the to-be-continued legacy guide, and maybe some of the stuff you're whipping up phiedi.

It all depends on what topic you're working on. I don't think repeat guides are a good idea, so what were you planning on?

We don't hold a monopoly on writing guides, and I even if a subject has already been covered it would be insightful to read it again from another author's perspective.

Oooooh well its a secret! :P
Haha nar it will cover much of the usual stuff, but in a different way than most of the other guides, and i've got some pieces written on areas that i'm pretty sure have never been covered before. There's actually not much in mine about inspiration though, so yours and mine should be fine to co-exist :D

Okay i'll go ahead with it then.

This is really nice. In my opinion, I would have preferred some more examples of game mechanics, but this way leaves much for people to figure out.

Well, you've stated the exact reason why there are very limited examples. The less I show, the more there is for you to explore yourself, meaning a greater chance for originality.

Plus, if you really need more there are currently 171518 maps on NUMA for you to browse through.

I think this is the map to read for all mapmakers. I can't think of a person on Numa (besides yourself) who wouldn't improve their mapping after reading and applying it.
People write to me and say, "I’m giving up, you’re not talking to me." I just write them a simple message like, "Never give up," you know? And it changes their life
