Dedication Maps

Often times on NUMA, people like to dedicate a map to someone else, which I think can be a really nice way to show someone that you appreciate something that they've done. Dedication maps are a really nice treat, when made special for the receiver. That's my main complaint - I feel like most dedication maps these days were dedicated almost as an afterthought, and for me, that lessens the message. A map that is going to be dedicated to someone ought to be made from scratch with them in mind - it's a gift, a thanks, or a reward, and it's for one person in particular. You shouldn't just be able to delete the name after "This map is dedicated to xxxxxxx for being such a pal" and rededicate it to someone else. It ought to be something more.

Agree? Disagree?

Comment.

I agree absolutely. ded maps nowadays have little if anything to do with the honoree. personally, my ded maps reflect the honoree's mapping style or mapping habits (speedrunning, etc.) otherwise, the ded is like the smiley face sticker on a child's A+ test; it looks good, and the kid won't complain, but it means squat and if you try to remove it it'll rip the paper. (I don't think that last point actually is applicable, but it makes sense.)

Oh, of course. A dedication is only as good as the effort the author put in.

I agree. The Legacy dedications to the top three for Origins, Expanse, and Zenith, /those/ are dedications. Deds nowadays are more like a shout-out for a good demo or something of the sort.

i agree. i myself give out dedications very rarely. a dedication is like a statue; it does not necessarily need to be made in the person's style, but it should be a monument to their honour and skill. in my opinion, dedications should not be given out for specific agd's or speedruns (except for predefined competitions). when i gave my dedication to da_man, i had him in mind when i started and made the whole map because he was leaving (and for no other reason).

I agree wholly. I have given out dedications of AGD's on my hardest levels for motivation, but the dedications never get noticed (even by who I dedicated it to). It doesn't seem special.

I'm not sure that rewarding someone with a dedication map for having the best AGD time or Speedrun is a bad thing. It's just that I feel like often times it doesn't matter who "wins" the dedication map - the prize would be the same regardless. I simply prefer when I see dedication maps that are a bit more tailor made for the recipient. I think one map that serves as a dedication to one person shouldn't work as a dedication to another.

I pretty much agree. DEDs are dedications. In real life, if you won some sort of trophy/prize/award, you wouldn't just give a dedication to a random person who came and lent you $5 in a time of need. DEDs should be worth more than that. And a DED like that just doesn't mean much either. DEDs go to people who really deserve it, like if someone saved your life sometime, or something like that. Then when you win that award, it would make more sense to give a dedication to that person.

something like that =3

I also agree.
There's almost no recognition towards the dedication recipient for why they got the dedication, instead, their names seem to be more like fillers for the description.
Giving dedications to the agd artists are the no-so-secret ways to attempt to get more comments on your maps nowadays.

Dedications have always served as an incentive for someone to play someone's map. And I know what you mean. I've seen many a time where dedications have just been a map with someone's name stamped in the comment.

You can generally tell when an author has endeavoured in his dedication maps though. They're the ones you really appreciate.

Even if somebody DEDs a map to someone that sucks, it is nice to know that somebody at least tried. However, I do agree that they should be much more thought out than the majority of the vague DED maps that plague NUMA. The only thing we can really do about it is make sure our maps are very meaningful when we make DEDs. Lead by example.

i fully agree with the OP.
i give dedications to people who deserve it, and try to get something of how they make me feel (or internet equiv.) into the map.

I know! Let's sue the people who make crappy DED maps!!!!

kidding.... but sometimes, you wonder. If *noobs* are giving out DEDs, and their maps generally are not that good, why do the challenge? Do get a crappy map in your name?

not pointing fingers at anyone though.

i like to ignore deds

some people get them all the time for being helpful to noobs (GTM) and some get them all the time because they challenge experienced players with lame challenges (my seconds map).

if you're gonna hand one out, you should think about it, but i personally prefer getting mentioned in a "last map" to getting a ded because then i know i really meant something to the person.

I like to create maps that reflect a person's play style or making their name into a semi-playable map or DDA.

Generally Noob Players Hand Out More DED's but as they make better maps and become more known in the community there DED's Generly Are More Meanfull :)

randomly Capitalising words Here And there doesnt Make Anything better.
Also, reading over your posts before you make them lets you remove things like "Meanfull" and incorrect usage of there/their/they're.

I cant stand "name" maps, but thats just me.

Eh, I definitely fall into the category of slapdash deds. Sure, it doesn't mean as much, but I just make the map I feel like and then throw their name in there to show my appreciation for whatever attention they gave me.

Hah, I used to think name dedications were the best type. Then I decided that maps made in the dedicatee's style were cool too. Then I decided that anything is nice, so long as effort's been put in. Damn my lack of convictions!

No no, I think that last one is spot on. There are many ways to go about it. So long as care actually was put in, it should make a decent dedication.
