What does it take for you to give a race map a 5?

It often seems that people give 5's to race maps somewhat capriciously. What qualities do you think a race has to have in order to merit a five? Originality over flow? Or what?

Unimpeding flow, personal subjective aesthetic pleasure, the ability to do the map as quickly as possible without enemies getting in your way because the author has catered to the terrible-at-N general NUMA populace, and probably of an average to longer-than-average length. It's got to be epic for me to give it a five.

It's nearly impossible to give a race 5, because race is just not the map type for it, unless it has specifications of KinGAleX listed above, which needs intense skills.

I don't think I've ever given a race map a 5, and I am still a fervent believer that in the grand scheme of mapping, no Race map has ever approached a 5 in quality.

IMO, it's kinda sad that so many will not give 5's to races that deserve them. Also, I feel people give 4's to many races that don't deserve them. These habits creates a HUGE discrepancy between low 4's and high 4's.
Anyway, back on track...what about races that deviate from the stereotypical race category? "Liberal" races, per se?

I don't know why they're called races anyway... a more fitting map to call a race is 'RUN AWAY FROM DA ZAP DRONEESZZZ!!1!11'. Races are just flowy maps.
If it has good flow, good aesthetics, and no annoying enemies, 5.

It has to be individual to a certain extent. It has to be aesthetically awe-inspiring. The route that the flow takes must be inventive. The race must create an atmosphere of some sort, and to utilize it effectively. The flow must be unimpeded, imaginative, and exiting. The race can have a certain amount of genericity, so long as it is clear the author has some of their own ideas about the genre. Enemies must be effective - close calls arent required too much, but the enemies should fit with the surrounds or atmosphere chosen by the author. The gold must be placed appealingly.
There are only a select few authors currently which i will give a 5 to on a race map. Wulfgang, Riobe, and Da_Man (and possibly yungerkid if he even actually submitted anything).
And as for what Rhekatou said, bunniesandsheep is a very talented race author, and has been here a long time. He knows a thing or two, even if he's a little rusty after his leave :P

Same, except I think I gave a few of them 5's when I was really new to NUMA. I regret it :PAmpersand wrote:I don't think I've ever given a race map a 5, and I am still a fervent believer that in the grand scheme of mapping, no Race map has ever approached a 5 in quality.
