I've been seeing a lot of those maps lately, where people record themselves making it on youtube, sped up with some cool music? It had me thinking; isn't watching someone actually make a map a much better measure of a good map maker than a finished product? I mean, what seperates the good from the great is often process over pudding. Erm, sorry, wasn't really thinking about the analogies. -_-

Anyways, it'd be really cool if we got more people to make these "recorded maps". It'd help new mappers get to grips with structure and placement much better than "less mine spam" or "more gold" or "less quotes", as they can actually see what they need to do. Who else thinks that this is a good idea?

It'd also be really cool if we could collect all of these recorded maps into a single place. Posting youtube and respective map links on this thread would be a good idea, and simply putting the mrmc tag in all recorded maps could really help us to put together an archive. Ideally, the more people who make a recorded map or two, the better; having some seasoned pros make videos would be much appreciated, as well as videos from up-and-comers.

If actually recording the map is an issue, just download Hypercam and give it a whirl. Then go into moviemaker and add some music or captions or whatever. I should have learnt this before I tried the horror of audioswap. :P

I'll add a link to my new recorded map when I've finished doing all this. Audio for the vid will probably still be uploading.

<~blue_tetris> First off, making a game and calling it the sequel to Tetris is like making "Butter 2: Revenge of Butter".
<~blue_tetris> And it's actually margarine.

I might do this, except I'd have to speed the video up so much that you wouldn't see anything. XD

Don't worry, clips of maps in progress would also be fine. It's still a snippet into the mechanations of a mapper. :P

HyperCam is annoying; use CamStudio instead.

Someone tell me to make a map. Then I'll record it. :p

No; a good map is a good map, regardless of how it was made (excluding using programs and such, of course). Good mapmakers make good maps. Period.

Regardless, this is an awesome thread. And...

If I recorded myself making a race, the resultant video would be like, half the size of my hard drive.

But I may record a couple of action maps - how do you speed up videos in movie maker?

There should just be a video effect labled 'speed up 2x' or something. I just drag it onto the video and it's good to go. You can do this multiple times for the same clip, too.

Mmhmmm. Sorry i haven't been updating or supporting this, my laptop has died again, and doing it all on the ipod would probably lead to suicide afterwards :p If someone else would like to compile a list, i'd be fine with it. Cheers to palemoon and co for making a load of maps to support this!

Also, maxson, what if a good mapmaker makes an excellent map by fluke alone? If he places objects and tiles randomly and ends up with a good result, is that better than methodi ally and consciously piecing together a slightly weaker map?

Well, if a good map is a fluke for someone, they aren't really a good mapper, are they? ;)

That is why I decline the title of Iron Cook and accept only the lesser title of Zinc Saucier, which I just made up. Also, it comes with double prize money!
