I see what you're getting at with this. But, they won't release the site officially until they know most if not all of the major bugs are fixed. As for the features, they can always work on it when it's in use.

I'm not saying they can't work on it when it's not in use, I just see them losing dedication or not catching bugs.

We need a different coder at this point. Our good guy, incluye, has lost interest at this point. Nothing will be fixed until we have someone who is experienced and who has the time.

I'm willing to offer payment upon completion of the website, knowing that it works and all that. I won't be able to pay you much, maybe $50 at the most, but it will be a new video game at least.

I would appreciate if this could become a development blog for narc as such. I haven't heard anything regarding progress for quite a while now.

Feel free to ask away about progress in IRC, it's hard to guarantee that this thread'll keep getting updated.

Right now incluye's working on redoing the behind-the-scenes work in a different language so that everything is faster and easier to manage. On the front end of things, hopefully this next iteration will come out looking more like Cooby's work (considering you guys weren't really fans of the current look).

Hi coders.

Where the fuck are all of you!? Given the current feedback from this thread, and the apparent slow-ness of Ruby as a back-end for this site, incluye has decided to start learning Scala to re-code everything.

Re-code everything. Please, please, if you have any interest whatsoever in coding and/or this community, help him out in #narc. The issue with the current NUMA is that there was only ever one coder - who's since left and is now living his own life. We need a map archive that is a community project. That, by definition, requires the input of the community. There are a decent amount of you out there, just join the channel! See how you can help. Make a map archive that's actually ours.

Addendum to Yanni's post: Scala is a lot like Java, with the added feature of having access to all Java libraries (it compiles to Java bytecode) but it has nicer, less redundant syntax. It should be pretty simple to make the jump—it took me only like a week and I never knew Java in the first place.

uh, i see guys you're trying to rescue numa. it's cool, i'm sure pretty much everyone will move to NARC. one little question though - the link in the first post doesn't work for me, can somebody post the new one? i'm too tired to dig through the whole topic.

oh, by the way, if it'll use cooby's design, it'll be amaziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiingggg

I'm righteously furious enough to extend my help in anyway I can. That said, I'm pretty good at OOP/imperative stuff. I just wish I could trust myself to trust that you'll trust me. Why don't we discuss this in the mission room. Seriously the lack of activity is getting on my nerves.

I mean honestly we're looking for a bug free archiving site with more features that arachnid just no longer has the time to work on due to more pressing tasks. It's time to correct the glitches of the past that have defined us. I'll be hanging out doing some studying.

Why do I keep starting every sentence with 'I'?

UPDATES!

If you haven't seen the sleekness of the new design, please do so!

Please report anything missing or not working correctly. There are some things we are definitely already aware of, but a detailed list of what isn't working and the details of what you're doing when it does not work would be helpful. We will do our best to make this as functional as possible in as timely a manner as our IRL schedules will allow.

Somebody give me a list of everyone who's registered their account, please? I don't want to be looking for /EVERYONE/.

Also I made an account and posted the (to my knowledge) first map.

Maybe you should add an Captcha to the Narc! I mean i think we all can agree that we do not want to have bots posting maps that actually are not maps just blank files..?
Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

Okay, so I decided to create an account and submit a map. To my dismay, my map didn't appear when I clicked on 'browse'. Turns out my map is there but it's map number 6. I guess new maps aren't showing because the maps on the site which have been imported from NUMA have kept their NUMA ID numbers and the map list is sorted by ID. New maps with new ID numbers are burried at the very bottom of the pile. Also import from NUMA doesn't work at all. :/

Nobody is going to use this website if it doesn't display new maps.

Yeah, that's because NUMA is down. Scraping is no longer possible.

NUMA periodically comes back up. Does map importing turn back on automatically? And is it fast enough to get all 220000 maps in any reasonable time frame?

No, and that would take more work than it's worth.
boustrophedon wrote:And is it fast enough to get all 220000 maps in any reasonable time frame?
No.

Maps are imported on demand. If you request an import at a certain time, and NUMA is unreachable, the import will stop and log an error. It will not queue the import and try it periodically.

Damn and blast. If we never get NUMA back we can say goodbye to all the krusch maps.
