With the recent Week of Reviews on NUMA I was pondering ways to help create a more fun and diverse way of Featuring maps. There were two ideas that I came up with during this week, but I think only one of them will be more engaging and fun.
If you haven't figured it out already, I'm proposing something I call Creature Feature where once every other Saturday we allow the members of the community who are not Reviewers to show off their Reviewing skills. There won't be a prize involved such as the Reviewer spot that was offered from Review Week, but it will give a chance to allow those who are not Reviewers to post some interesting stuff.
Now, to answer possible future questions!
How will I be able to submit a Review if I am a non-Reviewer?
This thread will be designated for you to submit a review of a map of your choice in a post. Please try and include at least 2 Reviews per post so that we don't clog up this thread with hundreds of thousands of posts.
Who will choose which Reviews get posted and which don't?
I'm leaving it up to the Reviewers to go through this thread and choose the best Reviews here. Again, for those of you who are Reviewers, it is up to you to decide the quality of a Review. If a Review is witty but has spelling and/or grammar errors, then PM the person who wrote the Review and ask them to fix their mistakes. Any unnecessary discussion in this thread will be frowned upon.
What happens if a Review I wrote is not submitted after a month?
Concerning the first question, PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT THE SAME REVIEW MORE THAN TWICE. Chances are if your Review wasn't picked up it was either subpar or it needed to be proofread and have spelling and/or grammatical errors fixed.
Is it possible to become a Reviewer if I submit quality Reviews?
While I don't want that to be the main purpose of this thread, there is a high possibility that we will use this thread to choose future Reviewers in the event that we will need more active Reviewers. This is basically an incentive to make your Reviews as unique and amazing as possible, guys.
How exactly will this fit in with the current Featured Maps queue?
This will happen on the 8th and 15th of every month and thus time will be set aside so that the current Reviewers will post a Review from this thread. It is still limited to one Review per day though, so if a Reviewer submits a Review from this thread they are not allowed to post their own Review.
Wait, so only one Review from this thread will be posted on Creature Feature days?
YES
ATTENTION: Reviewers
It is your job to make sure the quality of the Review you are posting is what you would expect of yourself when you write a Review. That means it's up to you to make sure all (most) spelling and grammatical errors are removed before posting. Please be sure to PM the person who wrote the Review in this thread to edit it themselves or ask if you can edit it for them.
Take excess discussion to another thread or to a PM. If you have any questions, suggestions, comments or concerns, please PM me.
Thank you.

Yes, there will be a schedule. Every other Saturday will be set aside for this.fireburnsfree wrote:Dude, I love the idea. I think this is a great way to make things around here more...adverse. The only question is, when does this start? Like are you going to make a schedule for this or will it start at the convenience of the reviewer?
I'm guessing you didn't read the possible questions that would be asked.Rhekatou wrote:Are you going to take out, say 5 or so days of the month for this?
Also, isn't the point of reviews not to be public until the day? So if we're submitting on a thread, it kinda ruins the point...
As for your second question, Rhekatou, when I was having people submit their Reviews through a comment on NUMA it was about as public as this will be. Sure, this is in some ways more public, since it's going to be in one place instead of spread out across other people's maps. Also, not every Review in this thread will be posted, thus you won't know exactly which maps will get Featured or not unless some person has a very obviously awesome Review.manus australis wrote:How exactly will this fit in with the current Featured Maps queue?
This will happen on every other Saturday (once every TWO [2] weeks) and thus time will be set aside on this day so that the current Reviewers will not be able to post their own Reviews and must post a Review from this thread. This does not prevent your Review from being posted only every other Saturday. Reviewers may choose to give up their spot for one of the Reviews here if they so choose. It is still limited to one Review per day though, so if a Reviewer submits a Review from this thread they are not allowed to post their own Review, and vice versa.
I think I'm more curious just to see how this works out, more than I'm worried about how it may not work out. Some people know that I put a lot of trust into this community to do the right thing when something potentially cool is staring them right in the face. Like I said above, I would appreciate at least 2 Reviews per post so that we don't clog up this thread with awful one-shot Reviews.ChrisE wrote:So the reviews by non-reviewers are to be submitted here? Why don't people play the map from here? The best reviewers get Reviewer status... pointless?
If I'm honest, I don't think this thread will work very well. It will get spammed very quickly, unless you have some way of controlling who posts here. Also, can the not very good reviews be deleted? That way, this forum won't get clogged up with rubbish.
That's just my opinion. The rest is down to you.
The Reviews by non-Reviewers will be submitted here, to help get non-Reviewers more involved with the Featuring system. We used to have a thread called, "Suggest a Feature!" and people would write their own Reviews and everyone was able to play the map if they so chose. It wasn't a bad thread and some maps were Featured from it, but it didn't detract from the map.
To be frank, I said that we'll probably look here for possible Reviewers in the future if our current Reviewers start slacking. We currently have some of the most dedicated and active Reviewers since the beginning of Featured Maps, so I don't think we'll be pulling anybody from this thread anytime soon.
You may begin to submit your Reviews whenever you like. Remember, minimum of TWO REVIEWS PER POST. Further discussion needs to be held in another thread, a PM or on IRC. Please catch me on IRC or PM me on the forums if you have any further questions. Thank you.

Good morning from us here at Food Numa Network, and our question for the day is:
What makes a map delicious?
Well of course there must be a beautiful base of tiles, layered with a sprinkle of enemies, seasoned with a touch of gold, combined with a splash of difficulty and iced with a layer of tasty game play. Then it is always helpful to have a soothing reminder that the author is one that can always be relied on to produce beautiful creations.
That’s all the time we have for today, enjoy your day and stay Frosty Numa.
Students...
This week, our top instructor, PALEMOON, has been kind enough to show us how you can be like many of the great authors here at NUMA Academy. After reviewing your pre-submitted maps, I have come to the conclusion that Mr. Jeremoon has best captured our instructor's famous mapping style. Students, please pass this around; this map, which he has titled "33-0 Act VI The Thunder Castle," is a perfect example of successful style and game play. Dearly note the abstract use of tiles and nice placement of gold.
Thank you, my young protégées. Class dismissed.

One night I discovered why my pet hamster disappeared and left a red circle in the pine bedding. Lars the zombie cat was living under my porch! I went to investigate with a flashlight when suddenly the festering, fluffy beast swallowed me whole. Inside its belly I found my poor hamster, but it had been infected by the zombie plague and tried to kill me.
Half of ACR’s maps are brilliant and the other half you don’t know what he was thinking when he made them. “zombie cats dont like the moon” was both.

Here is a map, which you can`t play long, but which inspires you and makes you smile. Yes, you can go on complaining about how lame it is, but in your backhead you`ll always be jalous you didn´t have the idea first.

As the sun rises over the bustling metropolis in front of you, a euphoric haze mists your eyes.
The journey had been arduous, the sun assaulting, every moment lingered beyond shade excruciating, however your pilgrimage was over – your labours rewarded.
Stopping for one last look at the flat horizon of the seemingly endless plain you crossed, you pause thoughtfully, before turning and stepping through the gates into the city. It was time to go home.

Bridges to heaven. Even the name sounds prestigious. The map itself is different from maps you usually play now. From the beginning, the rocket chases you out of the clearing you had started upon, and quickly leaps you up to the gold stockings. Following up on this, the gold quickly becomes a hassle while you anxiously try to attain all of it while not getting blasted by the rocket. The exhilerating effects of it was all I needed to play it over, and over, and over again until my hands were hurting from constant patterns. So I leave you here, to play this most prestigious map.

Scene 1: In which the protagonist fends off a lone gunman moving at impossibly slow speeds, while deftly climbing up and down amongst bizarrely perfect circles in search of small edible pieces of gold.

Welcome to The Numa Art Museum. Please step this way where you will meet a fine author. His name is Mekkah. He has created a beautiful piece of work. See how each brush stroke of mines and gold only compliments the foundation of the tiles. Now look how the drones furthers the magnificence. Finally the flow of everything, you see, is far too great to not fall completely in love with. Now you take a few minutes to fully enjoy Lufthansa, a real piece of artwork.

Yahoozy with a sprinkle of the somewhat obnoxious Skyline256 delivers a brave and downright audacious map that will help you start to forget about that $23,800 you lost on Wall Street the other day.
“ROFLMFAO” I hear you say, “How can a map with 45 diagonal launch pads be worthy of my attention?” Let’s just say that krusch has 95 diagonal launch pads in one of his maps. You wouldn’t question krusch now... would you?

You think you're agile? Intelligent? Try eating a peach. It's juicy outsides will keep you biting away at this until you hit its rock-solid core, where if you bite it, well... you bite it hard. Your blood will stain the concrete beneath you as you are born again to conquer this vicious map. Keep nibbling away until you are left with your victory prize: a pit in your stomach that you've filled with gold.

40 years. 40 years and not a drop of rain.
As the sky turned to fire the land laid parched, it's only nourishment quickly receding far from what was once recognised as coastline. With the mighty seas retreating from the beaches, hiding in dark fissures where the may escape the wrath of the sun, the tides have deserted, leaving only small amounts of coral, testament to the life that once flourished in this land, however, little is it known that the dry fossils are very much capable of supporting small bacteria.
Pity this bacteria is deadly to ninjas.

NUMA is an art show. Artists from around the world gather to submit their creations that have sprung from a humble beginning. Shortshift has used his [magic] paintbrush and crafted a beautiful landscape. The tiles are a rugged and harsh panorama that have a clean edge and polish. Vines and cobwebs hang delicately from the rock overhang. And then there is the jewel in the center of the map, guarded by a fierce missle launcher. I would like to invite you to enjoy this masterpiece and discover a whole new meaning of the word "epic."

Diamond on a Landmine. - by chaosraider
All of us loves someone or something. It varies; the loving object may be Rihanna, Garfield or Intel 8237 Multimode DMA controller. But one fact doesn't change: love.
So, what is love? Thinking about the dear all day? Tweeting sweet utterances about it? Drawing its picture to the door of any toilet? Buying fascinating gifts, or plucking pretty begonias from Uncle Teddy's precious garden?
What if you'd see a charming diamond on a landmine at the backyard of your school? Would you risk your life for it for the sake of a chance to give it as a gift to your well-beloved lover, or would you just leave it alone?

You are challenged with an abstruse decision; take a path that is unknown to you, or fight a dragon.
Unfortunately due to your overweight size you are unable to take the path & must inadvertently fight the dragon, whilst also avoiding the deadly red marijuana.
You currently don't have the strength or the dark energy required to slay the dragon so you must evade him, you are too weak to be able to climb to safety, but with the aid of some cheese you may just be able to gain the strength to dodge the dragons fatal blasts & escape willard.

Just change "deadly red marijuana plants that grow around dragons" to "deadly volcanic geysers that comfort dragons" and keep "Fortunately the dragon is slow & static." and get rid of everything after that sentence and you have a decent review. You are allowed to edit for yourself, you know. Just use "[]" when changing things.Aidiera wrote:Can you please slim this down to less than 99 words?Paradox-Dragon wrote:http://www.nmaps.net/215344

lord_day's 2006 puzzle jumper Quest is as epic a journey as can be created in a 2-D ninja platformer. A combination of increasingly precarious leaps and slowly mounting pressure from the locals come together to challenge travelers to their limits. The margin for error is fine; so far there has been only failure...
Nothing ingrains a map on you as much as competing on it for hours. Especially when you are against the foremost highscorer of the time and narrowly clinch the win. Touring Europe is an amazing map to play, filled with little possibilities that might shave a couple of frames from your run. An unnecessary difficulty spike or a worthwhile investment of effort? The only way to know for sure is to pull it off. Don't mistake the sparsity for simplicity, this map is as challenging and entertaining as you make it.

Nuggets may have made only 3 maps, but every one of them are amazing. For a first map, this is a complete masterpiece, with the gauss turrets and laser drones ready to kill you, a challenging seeker drone, and mine jumper sections. Overall, this has a rating of 5 for a reason. *trollface*
