This post only really applies to average/mediocre high scorers. I put myself in this category - I have over 50 top 20 scores, but no 0ths, and only a dozen or so are in the top 10.

My problem is that there are a few high-scoring techniques that I just can't do, so I tend to avoid playing levels that involve them. I can't chimney well, anything that involves wall-jumping off thwumps stumps me, I'm rubbish at "claustrophobic" levels which involve a lot of different movements in tight areas ... the list goes on :(

Anyway, I've found that the best way to find levels that I can high-score on is to use NHigh to find other average/mediocre high scorers and play the levels that they have scored on. The chances are that they have also got gaps in their game, and if I can high-score on one of the levels that they have beaten, then I can generally high-score on a few others as well.

I apologise for naming names, but for example 999_Springs posted about only having a few high scores, and mentioned 04-2. I hadn't played this level for a while, so gave it a go and managed to get a top 20 score. I then tried the other levels he has scored on, and sure enough I gained a couple more top 20s.

999_Springs, don't feel I am picking on you here! After all, your next step should be to check the levels I have top 20s on, as you will probably find some you can high score on now :)

Hey, welcome to the forums!

I had similar "holes" in my game back when I was around 50 highscores. There's so many little tricks in n, once you get them all down top 20's are a breeze to get. Most of them, like the ones you mentioned, just take practice. You'll get them eventually. Look at lookatthis's 2-1, he's not a great chimneyer by any means but he figured out a technique that enables him to get a top 20 on levels such as this one. Think of thwump wall-jumping as wall jumping off moving one-ways. You have to be holding the direction the thwumps in while you press jump for it to work. You've got some impressive runs, just keep playing and you'll get all these little tricks down for sure.

Yeah my brain knows how to wall jump off thwumps, it's just my fingers forget how in the heat of the moment. Levels such as 97-3 are like my worst nightmare!

Thanks for the advice though - to show my appreciation I've noticed you don't have a top 20 on 49-1 which I found fairly easy, I'm sure it won't take you more than 5 minutes to score on it ;)

Heh, that's one of about 50 I've lost in the past couple months I've been inactive. I'm going to get 'em all back soon enough (=

So this is at least half the reason why my 15th has mysteriously become a 17th.

GROWL!!!!!!! (Note to self: NEVER post about non-NReality scores.)

Now I have to go and waste another bunch of minutes downloading Python in order to work NHigh.

So this is why 20% of ALL of my scores have disappeared in the last 24 hours. I'm not sure I can retain my sanity after the Puzzle of the Exuberant and the biology project that became optional (because only 3 people out of 20 started on it) and now THIS.

Oh, and the computer from which I highscore doesn't have N completed on it. So don't tell me about levels/episodes later than episode 76 and 83.
Achievements:

Completed N and NReality.
106 N v1.4 highscores.
I used to maintain 1000 NReality Level Top20 Highscores - Ranked 0th
Former Owner of Episode 169, way back when.
I've taken 10 Metanet 0ths. 6 of them lasted <2 days. I don't have any of them anymore. >:(
Third Place in BLUR 4 highscore.
Not highscoring anymore until v2.

I have found that once you get your first couple highscores, it gets easier to get more from there on out.

Also, going back to filling in holes in your playing, what I think is probably the best way to improve is to find a level that uses that particular trick early in the level, and try to highscore that. With it being early, you don't get frustrated by not being able to consistently get there to practice it. For example, I would recommend 25-2 for practicing triple jumps off a slope and up a wall. It doesn't take much to set up for it, is almost ideal in the run up, and is really all it takes to get on the highscores there. Just browse through the levels and look at some of the highscores until you find a level that helps you with a weaker part of your game. Alternatively, you can make a map in NED, or search for one on NUMA that serves the same purpose.
[16:24] <@golfkid> I'm pretty sure I will literally scream if I die on the last column of 78-4 at this point
[16:25] <trance> Oh, yeah. That level.
[16:29] <@golfkid> lol
[16:30] <@golfkid> It looks so simple
