Now that you mention it, I do remember you being frustrated that you couldn't take it back. I also remember tying your initial 0th, but it just wasn't satisfying enough, you know? Anyway, you probably need the beer more than I do by the sound of it, you poor sod!

Also, I'm not sure if anyone even mentioned this on the forums, and perhaps Eddy was too modest to put in in the summary, but Eddy broke xaelar's record for most cumulative time spent as grandmaster on August 2nd, 2015; it has since been added to his wiki page. Furthermore, I just wanted congratulate everyone who took a 0th since the new rankings; it's really incredible to see some of the old guard make a showing. Lastly, I was interested in seeing a Total Community Score graph; there might have been one that Seifer produced, but it would be outdated at this point. I would also suggest compiling NHigh files from this year, especially if zapkt or someone has been making regular saves.

getpucht doens't seem to have any hacked level score on the infunity boards, so I don't know where that huge score comes from. He did hack 00-2 on the Metanet server, but that score doens't appear in infunity.

Introduction

Hey there guys, so September has finished already and hence it's time for a new Rankings Update! This month there were a total 39 different 0ths being taken, with 10 of them being battled for a total of 25 times, which gives us a net total of 54 0th exchanges. As usual, I'll now proceed to thoroughly analyze - in descending order of time saved - those 0ths that are worth it, whether it is because of the time saved, the battle that took part, the changes in it's route, or the consequences it had. 0ths with little lead taken by just cleaning and not battled won't be mentioned because of lack of interest.

Highscoring

Level scene

So the biggest gain this month was a whooping 2.900 seconds in 49-0. As a recap, last month xela designed a new route for the inner section of the map, taking the 0th by about half a second, but as I pointed out in the past rankings it certainly seemed to have a lot more potential. Effectively, this month I executed a cleaned version of the route, and that resulted in an almost 3 second gain over xela, much to my surprise.

Moving on, we have 95-4, in which we cleaned 1.350 seconds. The community had discussed how to avoid the final drone bottleneck in the innovations thread, mainly TRO and jp, and of course jp came with a new, faster start, that managed to do so. This of course involved having to change the second half of the map as well. This new route involves a new bottleneck near the end with a pretty cool drone dodge. He took the level by 0.800 seconds, and I then cleaned it for a further 0.550 seconds. The final bottleneck is now limiting the score again, so further improvements will have to deal with this.

Then we have 21-0, which was cleaned by 1.200 seconds. This was one of several xela's appearances this month, he cleaned my previous run and beat me by a frame. Indeed, not much could be done since there was a bottleneck near the end. As a workaround, I innovated the bottleneck part with an ironically slower technique, but which allowed to bypass the drone bottleneck. To make it worthwhile, I compensated by doing the run cleaner up to that point. With this I retook the 0th by 0.275 seconds. Finally, macrohenry came to play and smacked us in the face with a new route, flawlessly executed, taking the 0th by 0.900 seconds.

Now we have 87-2, which I took by one frame shy of a second. There was nothing special done here except for some cleaning, which in such a long level caused a final big gain. Then we have 32-4, a level classically held by macro since 2006, which was in fact his first 0th. Last month jp rerouted the level, and macro cleaned it for a 0.625 gain. This month the activity continued. I cleaned a couple more frames by using the same route, then macro came back and rerouted the level once again, cleaning 0.225. Finally I returned and retook it by 0.475 by cleaning the route. The final gain on this map for this month was 0.750 seconds, and a total of 1.375 seconds if we include last month's gain. I want to emphasize that, after so many years, this level has been fully rerouted twice in a month.

Next we have 71-1, a level which I already held but which I improved in my episode run. I added the big corner jump innov on the left side of the map for a final gain of 0.750 seconds and some comfortability in the episode. Then comes 32-2, in which I outcleaned jp for a final 0.700 seconds gain. jp had innovated this level a while ago in the final drops section.

Another interesting one is 5-3. macrohenry proved us all that the MBD route by Raif was doable realtime, albeit skipping a piece of gold which would make the run ridiculously hard. Despite this, the route was fast enough to grant macro an extra 0.225 seconds off my previous run. I took a shot at this route and cleaned a couple frames more, but the route was already getting very close to it's max due to the final drone/thwump bottleneck (4 frames left, according to Raif's MBD). However, I noticed that if fast enough, one could take another piece of gold (3 in total) when first entering the bottom row of gold, hence having to travel less distance after the bottleneck when you take the rest of the row, saving time. This allowed me to clean a further 0.325 seconds, for a final gain of 0.600 in the level. As a suggestion, Raif isn't taking this extra piece of gold, so this could be an idea for a new MBD, although it might be impossible to be fast enough when taking the extra piece of gold Raif takes.

Anyways, we recently had action in 62-4. macro designed a new beginning for it, which together with a clean run allowed him to beat the drone in the bottom left corner of the map. After changing this part as well to cope with the new situation, he took the level by 0.275 seconds. This new route includes a drone bottleneck near the end. I later retook it by cleaning the ending after the bottleneck, and adding a little change (a jump) in the final gold section. As a suggestion, I could say that the bottom left corner drone on the way back is also beatable, allowing one to skip the corner jump and clean time, but it might be pointless because that's still before the bottleneck, and so you still have to wait, unless you change the route and take the switch first, rather than on the way back.

Another relatively decent lead came in 49-4, in which I added a couple innovs already being used in speedrun mode to clean macro's run by 0.600 seconds. These innovs are the initial bb corner kick, and the use of the bb's at the end to reach the final switch. Then we have 72-4, I initially took this level from macro by cleaning 4 frames in the final drop. jp then came with a new route that he had devised some time ago, and pulled off an excellent run with a tight ending, dodging a drone, for another 0.450 seconds. The final gain was then 0.550 seconds. Again, this route includes a bottleneck at the very end, it seems like this month is bottlenecks month. However, in this case I have the feeling it's avoidable by luring it conveniently at the start of the run.

Following in order of time saved we have 85-0, which I took essentially by cleaning, but also by adding a cool innov at the beginning that jp found a while ago, consisting on skipping a walljump. It's very possible that other people already thought about this though, seeing as it's a pretty basic innov. Then we have 33-2, a level which last month I took during my perfect episode run. macro noticed that I was doing a slow route at the top mine chamber, compared to that of Kool, and he executed it to beat me by 0.150 seconds. Thankfully, I noticed yet a faster method which avoids all the wait, and used it to clean a further 0.225 seconds. The total gain in this level was then 0.375 seconds.

In the same episode we have 33-1, the most fought level this month with a total of 4 exchanges. macro came back to reclaim his 0th in this level by 0.175 seconds, which I had taken last month. I retook it by 3 frames, he cleaned 2 more, and finally I squeezed 2 more, for a final net gain of 0.350 seconds. This was all done by pure cleaning, and the route is now very tight all around. The same amount of time was cleaned in 34-1, in which I cleaned jp's run and, again, forced the run close to the final... you guessed it, drone bottleneck.

Moving on we have some more xela activity in 59-3, he outcleaned my old run by 0.125 seconds with a very polished run, specially in the top left corner. I had to slightly innov the level by adding an obvious corner jump at the beginning to grant me some lead, and be able to retake it by another 0.175 seconds, for a final gain of 0.300 seconds. Then comes 59-4, a level which macro recently took by over 2 seconds by using the huge thwump skip on the left of the map, being used in sr mode already. I snatched it by pulling off the ballsiest ending pullable, cleaning 0.200 seconds.

We find some more xela action in 87-0. xela took this 0th off me by 2 frames by beating ANGERFIST, kryx's alias, by a frame. This was ANGERFIST's last cheated 0th remaining, and so that's another cheated 0th that bites the dust, we keep reducing the list! xela did this by applying the final chimney, which I then used to clean a further 3 frames for a final 0.125 seconds gain in this level.

Now we stumble across 48-0, this 0th wasn't battled, wasn't innovated, and wasn't cleaned by a decent amount of time, I just cleaned 3 frames by, well, being a bit faster. Why am I mentioning it then, wasn't I supposed to skip this kind of boring 0ths? Well read the intro again, because I also mentioned I'd talk about 0ths with interesting consequences. In this case in particular, this was Gutland's last 0th, so that's another classic player, as well as mysterious for having never joined the community, that falls off the 0th rankings. Will he read this and leave his beloved NUMA speedrun activity to make a comeback to highscore mode? I shall mention that in the previous rankings update we had 3 players losing their last 0th and falling off the 0th boards, and the previous one we had another 3. So we're talking about some serious figures now, let's annihilate the remaining 1-0th-ers!

Finishing off, jp took 16-4 by essentially applying the speedrun route that danielr and then myself had used in speedrun mode to take the 0th, modified to take the pieces of gold of course. This was done to avoid the previous, exactly, drone bottleneck, that affected macro's route, which was already pretty much to the limit. He pulled off a tight as fuck ending, but only managed to clean a couple frames since his new ending involves skipping the launchpad superjump and climbing manually, so while he had a big lead he lost most of it after this, however, this method is still able to improve as it's not limited by the drones anymore.

So I think that's about it, apart from the 0ths mentioned, there were about a dozen other levels that were just taken by cleaning a small amount of time, that is, the usual stuff.

Episode scene

So now in the episode territory, there were 6 episodes being taken. In order of time saved we had Ep59, which I took by 10.450 seconds by essentially pulling off the levels -2 and -4 routes, the biggest spreads in the episode. The first two levels are logically trivial, and then level -3 also required some cleansing. I think I missed half a second off all 5 level 0ths in this ep, but it's now missing 0.700 seconds after xela and I battled and hence cleaned 59-3. Then there is episode 53, which I took by 6.275 seconds. Quite proud of this one, as I only missed 6 frames off all 5 level 0ths. This is now the cleanest episode after my episode 33 was 'unoptimalized' by macro xD

Then comes episode 46 which I took by 4.275 seconds, missing 0.525 seconds off 'optimality'. Then it's episode 68, which I took by 3.750 seconds, missing a whole 1.225 seconds off the level 0ths, and episode 36 which I took by 2.775 seconds, missing exactly half a second. Finally we have episode 71, which I took by 1.625 seconds, missing 0.525 seconds. The missed time was pretty uniform apparently.

Other stuff

So I guess it's worth it to mention some other stuff and recap some stuff. First of all, there's a 3-way tie in the Top10 of the 0th Rankings, namely ska, xela and Raif are tied for 6 0ths. Furthermore, there's a brutal 4-way tie in the Top10 of the Level 0th Rankings, with the same people plus van, who also has an episode 0th.

As I already said, we had one player losing his last 0th this month, Gutland. This makes it 7 the number of players that have lost their last 0th only in this summer.

We also had another cheated run bite the dust, as ANGERFIST's last 0th 87-0 was taken legitimally. This reduces the list of cheated 0ths to only 5, while the list of legit Non-NReality 0ths remains at 4, all of them being levels in both cases. You can check both lists at the bottom of this post.

That being said, I think we can move on to the conclusion of this month's rankings.

Conclusion

I'll finish off the rankings, as usual, by pointing out the total score gains the community had during this past month. The community gained a total 14.300 seconds of Total Level Score, averaging slightly over 0.425 seconds per level, that is, 17 frames. Not bad at all, and interestingly, exactly the same average we had the previous month, 17 frames per level. On the other hand, we gained 29.150 seconds of Total Episode Score, with an average of around 4.850 seconds per episode. As we gained more TES than TLS, the difference between both decreased by 14.850 seconds, now standing at 332.575 seconds.

Introduction

What's up guys, time for the last update of 2015 and the first one of 2016. This past couple months were slow in the highscoring scene, we had a mere 10 0ths being taken, with half of them being battled for a final net of 17 0th exchanges. Let's quickly review the news.

Highscoring

The biggest change took place in 65-0, a pure framewar map. macro came up with a whole new route with which he shaved 7 frames, and I then cleaned a couple more. This has allowed to relax the extreme tightness of the prior route. This new route doubles the use of the tricky walljump. Then comes 7-4, in which oxy came up with an interesting innovation at the beginning, taking advantage of the classic slope propulsion glitch. He almost took the 0th, pretty good for his first Metanet top20. macro used it to take the 0th by 4 frames, and I then cleaned a couple more to regain it.

Moving on we have 18-3, this was the most battled level. Originally standing at .675 and already a pretty tight run, macro shaved a couple frames by sheer cleaning, and I did the same for another extra frame. macro returned and regained it by again another frame. Finally I made a slight innov by adding the bbbwj to snatch it back by 2 more frames. This level and battle reminds me to 33-1, which we recently battled and left with a really solid run all around.

I also innovated 34-3 to take ska's ancient 0th, essentially by changing the very ending, avoiding a walljump. I cleaned 5 frames. This represents another NRealitized run, with only 3 remaining, of which 2 are already tied in NReality (85-4 was tied this month as well, by yours truly). 5 frames is also what macro cleaned in 22-0, in which he really mastered the thwump push to achieve some extra speed.

Another battled level was 20-1, purely framewarish again. macro cleaned a frame with an innov based on hitting the corner rather than the slope after exiting the first chamber. I retook it by 2 more frames with the old route though. Since this level is limited by the final drone (it has to detect you downwards) there can't be much more left, unless we manage to lure it a tile earlier. In case you haven't noticed, the .2xx and .3xx scores correspond to the drone detecting the ninja two tiles later than in our runs, the .5xx runs (only swipenet's) correspond to only a tile later, and the .7xx and .8xx runs correspond to our current, fastest approach, so all different approaches are clearly delimited in this level. This gives an idea of how much room there is on each of those ranges, probably not more than 5-6 frames. I think luring it a tile earlier is possible though.

Moving on we have 26-4, in which I cleaned 3 frames by adding an initial walljump, and then 62-3, which macro took by a couple frames and I then regained by a sole more frame, both times just by cleaning the route. It surprises me how tight this level has become, considering how open it is and what big spreads it has in it.

Finally, macro took 13-4 by 2 frames by outcleaning Kool with an astonishigly polished run. This run shows how much a great final triple could potentially clean, too. And then, I evilly took 6-years-old 94-2 by a frame tying Raif's MBD, and hence breaking the 6-way tie that there was. This made Seifer lose a 0th mwahaha, however he came back out of nowhere, slightly before I did this, and tied 5-2 back after losing his tied 0th 3 years ago when Raif proved clux wrong by cleaning one more frame, first in his MBD and then realtime.

Speaking of ties, which I usually don't but that now I will since there were some relevant ones, we also had a player getting his first Metanet 0th, with xandotoaster tying 5-2 before Seifer came to do so, which is notable since it implies Seifer was lurking and noticed toast's move. Anyway, that means toaster is now in the 0th rankings, tied 11th no less. I hope to see some more activity from him in the future. I also tied 85-4, which was an ancient macro's run and hence not in NReality. Other ties were 82-2, the level van unmaxed some time ago and which as I explained I believe it's still cleanable, and also 95-0 (another non-NReality run, already tied my macro) and 26-0.

I'd also like to mention golfkid finally breaking the 71.3k seconds of TLS mark, separating himself from the lim-lat-eru peloton, and also lifdoff and innuendonewb being tangled up in a battle for reaching the Top20 Rankings first. This has already had the consequence of a total game score boost for both players, notably for inn who has mainly dedicated to episodes and who is now ranked 12th in the TES boards, and 16th in the TLS ones. I'm looking forward to seeing more progress in this battle.

Alright, I think that sums it all pretty much.

Conclusion

I'll finish off the rankings, as usual, by pointing out the total score gains the community had during this past month. The community gained a total 1.075 seconds of Total Level Score, averaging around 0.100 seconds per level, that is, 4 frames. We didn't increase our TES as no eps were taken. As we gained more TLS than TES, the difference between both increased by 1.075 seconds, now standing at 333.650 seconds.
