Finally hit the 3/4 million mark :) I'm curious to see if Eddy and/or macro have hit million deaths yet, but I'm guessing they both have. Been too long without an update, so I thought I would try and get this thread a little more active again.

I definitely haven't, I was truly inactive for the majority of 2013 as ska pointed out. Going to check now:

I started a new sol when I came back a month ago, because the old one was too big and took too long to load levels inbetween tries. You can see my original sol barely increased since my last update.

I used to sometimes suicide by hitting the closest enemy instead of suiciding. I did this so that I could watch the replay, and use it to compare on demo mode to see whether I was on track, especially if I missed some gold or a switch, had a botched ending, etc.

Does anyone else do this?

Yes, I do that on occasion. The most annoying things is thinking to myself "Oh, that was neat, I should make sure to kill myself on a drone if I screw up, so that I can rewatch it" and then I reflexively kill myself manually 2 seconds later when I do something wrong.


I wish I had the faintest idea what my death count is. I'm sure I am over 1 million though.

I wouldn't be so sure, I mean, I don't want to sound disrespectful or anything (not that this is an "accomplishment" to be proud of either :P), but 1 million deaths is way more than it seems, specially for a highscorer, only macro and I have reached it that I know of. Meta too, but he's mostly known as a speedrunner.

And considering you left for a considerable amount of time (in 2010), I wouldn't bet for it. If you had played consistently, then probably yes since that's a lot of time. golf is a perfect example as he's coming relatively close too. But with almost 4 inactive years?

Just as a reminder, back in the old forums, nobody had passed half a million, and that was in October 2008. Lim, xela, lat... none reached it. Lim probably never reached the half million, since he had stopped playing already when the old forums went down. Which is pretty awesome actually considering all that he accomplished. And you had "only" 283295 deaths when the old forums went down, if my memory is correct. Adding a couple years more, and then this return, might put you in the half a million mark at most, I'd say.

Although, this logic can countered by the fact that highscorers might lose patience more quickly than a speedrunner would for the same map. :p

I think really its the other way around. Because of the longer runs, if you die/suicide at the end of your run as a highscorer, it takes longer between deaths than if you're doing speedrunning. So while you are more prone to die, the deaths don't come as often.

Technically yes, but at the end of the day, you tend to be cleaner in shorter runs because mantaining the level of cleanliness (i.e. killing yourself as often) while increasing the length of the map would increase the time required exponentially. So basically shorter runs tend to imply many more deaths, because you can die more quickly and you tend to kill yourself more often. Most of this I can tell by experience.

A way of seeing that exponential thing I said above (which wasn't an exaggeration), is this: Imagine you have a particular run, of course you'll have a certain success percentage for each "section" of the map. Say you manage to reach the end with the desired route 1/100 tries. Now you add just a single trick at the very end, for which you have 50% success rate, so 1/2, technically an easy trick then, and barely increases the length of the run. That already doubles the average time you'll take to finish the run though, see? Now imagine doubling or tripling the length, not just adding a section.

So even though it might not seem like so, its just implausible to go for the same success rates over a long run, because the way it adds up "is exponential", if that makes any sense. You have to lower the bar a little. That's why adding length typically involves more time than adding cleanliness. Of course, this all depends on how much length or cleanliness we add, on the level... But I have extensive experience in both playing modes and that's what I feel.

Another way of seeing this is, imagine we measure the time in a certain unit. And, every unit of time, our cleanliness level makes us have a 50% change of killing ourselves. This means on average you'll reach the 2nd unit half of the times, the 3rd unit a fourth of the times,... the 10th unit 1/1024 of the times, etc. You can clearly see that as you add length, this just blows up, you would never finish the fucking run xD

Adding cleanliness isn't linear either, of course, in fact its probably "pseudoexponential" too, although that one would be harder to illustrate though. It'd still be a relatively smaller exponential though

On my first 3 .sols I had ~213.000 combined.
I started playing again on 12.2.2014 and have now 7983 deaths, which equals to about 725 deaths per day (today not counted, as it's early in the morning).
I really played a lot the last 2 weeks. (That is, the first 100 episodes, a little speedrunning and playing with the folks on IRC).

So, overall deaths are about 221k.

I just finished episodes 00-99, and have done minimal highscoring. Total deaths so far: 5604.
