The add-an-innovation contest - On hiatus

Posted: 2009.01.04 (03:16)
by Meta Ing
An 'impromptu' contest, in a way. I think it's pretty unique, unless someone can prove me wrong.
Here's how it works:

Once the contest has started, I will create a simple, easy map with a fairly straightforward, obvious route. After I do that, it will be your job, to take the map that I've posted, and add something to the map that will allow for innovation. Each week, I will create a new map, and there will be a 'theme', telling you what you can use for innovations. You are allowed up to three submissions per week.

----------

Rules:
  1. You must submit your map to NUMA, (ratings may be disabled if you wish) with the tag a-a-i, and then post the link to your map in this thread. Each time a map is submitted, I will comment on that map reminding others that the map is for a contest, and was not copied off of another map that was previously submitted. You do NOT have to do this yourself.
(Note: Just in case I don't post on your map within five minutes, you should link to this contest and mention that the map is for a contest and was not plagarized off of any previous map.)
  2. You should explain the main purpose of your innovation.
  3. You may only use the objects or tiles given by the theme.*
  4. You should be able to pull off your own innovation, although you are not required. 5 Points will be deducted if you can't pull your own innovation off without fbf (frame by frame), and 5 additional points will be deducted if you can't pull your innovation off at all. No points will be awarded to anyone who posts an innovation deemed impossible and/or impractical by one of the playtesters, so make sure that your innovation is possible and practical!
  5. You may not edit the map in any way other than with the innovation. (You may not move, change, or remove any tiles or objects; only add them based on the theme)*
*Maps that add anything not listed in the theme, or edit the map in any way other than with the innovation, will be disqualified for that week, as will the mapper.

----------

Judging:

This will be based mainly on one factor:
  • The innovation created. (_/20 per judge)**
Extra points, however, will be awarded for certain factors:
  • The amount of fun retained or added with your addition. (_/5 per judge)
  • A new, previously undiscovered trick. (With demo proof) (_/10 per judge)
  • The number of innovations created with your addition to the map. (_/10 per judge)
----------

**Please note that the innovation method created will not directly affect the score. (Unless you find some new trick, then you may be awarded extra points) This means, for example, that corner jumps are not worth more than perpendicular jumps, nor chimneying than walljumping... et cetera, et cetera. The main thing (besides the extra things) that will be judged is the practicality created by your innovation. (The faster your innovation is than the given route, and the more sense it makes to use the innovation, the more points you will be awarded) Another thing to note, is that your innovation does not neccesarily have to provide a faster way of reaching the exit. If it provides a faster, more practical way of reaching a certain part of the level, or some gold, or some other significant thing in the level, that works too.

Teleporters are NOT allowed. No points will be awarded to anyone who uses teleporters, as they are not innovative.

If a faster method for doing what you were going for with your innovation is discovered on the original version of the map, you will be awarded less points.

The difficulty of the innovation should be somewhere in the middle. If your innovation is too easy to do, you will get less points, and in most cases, if your innovation is too hard, you will get less points. (If the innovation is hard, but you are able to do the innovation yourself without fbf, then points will not be deducted. Please read rule 4 for full details.

----------

I will need, besides myself, at least two other playtesters (to test the innovations) / judges. I am particularly looking for renowned highscorers or speedrunners who have a decent understanding of what is and isn't possible in this game. The points will be determined by the total of the combined scores. This means that the more judges there are, the more points there will be. This does not affect the value of your score, it only makes the number larger or smaller, depending.

----------

Notice: In order to judge, you must be able to perform six certain tricks. PM me for more info.

Map:

Here is the map with the demo data of the route I came up with:

Copy this into the replay box in userlevels and click watch replay to see the demo.
-Remember, the point of this competition is not to beat my demo, it is to add something to the map that will provide a quicker route.

Theme:

Launchpads (three maximum)
Note: This is a speedrunning round, so innovations that aid in AGDs at the same time will earn bonus points.

----------

If you have any questions, let me know, and I'll gladly answer them.

I'll judge, I'll only have time to play N on weekends once school starts.

One question. How long will each round be?

Ok, that's fine.

Each round will be one week long except under certain circumstances. (such as holidays, if any)

---

To everyone else: remember -there can be more than three judges. The minimum, however, is three.

I think you need to add a new rule. "No deletion of objects"

If I want to make an innovation on a big map, just delete all the enemies and tiles and I can do it much faster ;D.

Umm...
Rule 5 wrote:You may not edit the map in any way other than with the innovation. (You may not move, change, or remove any tiles or objects; only add them based on the theme)
Actually, rule modified for clarity.

Ok.

I've added everybody who has signed up so far to the list.

Remember - if you want to be a judge, I'm going to have to see or know your skill level. You can only be a judge if you mean certain skill requirements.

Aesthetics don't matter in this competion.

And you can judge because I know your skill level, and you meet the requirements.

OK, added Gods_Reaper, tinkers7777, and Life247 to the judges (pending) list.

No more judges unless one of these people doesn't meet the six requirements necessary.

I would love to help you judging but I'm a bit too late aren't I'm ;)

EDIT: Oh I meant to be playtester:
"I am particularly looking for renowned highscorers or speedrunners who have a decent understanding of what is and isn't possible in this game."

Well, playtesters must judge, and judges must playtest, if that makes any sense, so if any of the pending don't qualify, you can become a judge/playtester.

Actually, I really think that you should be one of the judges, as you are among the most qualifying, so you'll be the last judge.
