Tilerun Competition!

Contest Rules And Standards

Why not kick off a new forum with a shiny new mapping/speedrunning competition! =)

You (As a mapper) will make the most stunning tileset you can make. It has to look great, has a lot of playability, and have a lot of space to innovate while speedrunning on. Nothing inappropriate, such as anything graphic, racist, sexists, etc. You are allowed to submit more than one tileset, but the maximum amount you can submit is 5. No more than that. There will not be any themes, and the tiles can be about almost anything. They may be submitted to NUMA, or they may be posted here as a file or using the handy Map tag. Plus, everything is decided by you, which includes the tiles, ninja, and exit. But, there may only be a tileset, ninja, and exit.***Note that if you do not post the tileset on NUMA, they will not be part of the speedrunning competition part.***

You (As a speedrunner) then has to speedrun the chosen tileset (First round tileset would be the winning tileset, then the rest of the tilesets will be chosen by the winner of each round), finding the best route possible, and beating whoever else is challenging your skills. There will only be a week for each round. All runs must be submitted to the NReality Speedrun server. It'll be an elimination style competition, so the amount of competitors get halved each round. We will need a certain amount of people to do this, so I'll need many sign-ups. 32 to be exact. ***Any runs submitted before the round has started may be immediately disqualified. Any runs submitted to the highscore or underclock servers on NReality will not be part of the competition, so pay attention to which server your playing on.*** There will only be a week between each rounds, so when the round starts, be ready to speedrun!

You are allowed to participate in both parts of the competition. The judging criteria are as follows:

Aesthetics: How good does the tileset look. Is it "Damn" looking, or "Damn, that sucks" looking.

Playability: How playable is it. Is it fun to run around in.

Innovation Room: Is there many different ways to approach speedrunning this. Will there be a dominant route, and are there a lot of ways to improve a run.

Phases

Phase 1: First off, we will need a lot of contestants to get this thing going. It's cool that you post advertisements on your maps if you like, but it is discouraged to post it on anyone elses maps. I'll also be needing a few different people to help out with this. One of which is judges. I'll need experienced judges to help me with this. I'll also need someone to make sigs/sigbars. I can't images well yet, so I'll need a pro to make some really cool sigs/sigbars. After this is set up, the speedrunning will begin. When all the tileset makers are ready to begin, we start.

Phase 2: All tileset makers will start making tilesets. There will be about a month or so to make your tilesets, so feel free to take your time on making these. During this time, speedrunning will not be happening. If you speedrun on any of the tilesets before the speedrunning starts, and that particular tileset gets chosen for one of the rounds during the speedrunning part of the competition, you will be disqualified from that round (Pending on the run), meaning you screwed up big time.


Phase 3: Speedrunning starts. It will be a long time before this part of the competition starts, so feel free to highscore these as much as you want. I will repeat this again for emphasis. "If you speedrun on any of the tilesets before the speedrunning starts, and that particular tileset gets chosen for one of the rounds during the speedrunning part of the competition (pending on the run quality), you may be disqualified from that round, meaning you screwed up big time."

Phase 4: Finally, all the prizes will be delivered to the winners. There will be separate winners for both parts of the competition. People may part there farewells, and prepare for the TC2 (Not coming any time soon). =)

Prizes

Prizes are as follows as of the moment.

For the tileset making proportion of the contest:

First Place: First place will receive a special signature, a sigbar, 15 RCE's, and a special review on any map of their choice. If I actually like the map that much, I may just feature it, but don't count on it. =)

Second Place: Second place will receive a special signature, a sigbar, and 10 RCE's.

Third Place: Third receives a special signature, a sigbar, and 5 RCE's

As for the speedrunning proportion of the contest:

The Champion: The champion receives a very special signature, and a sigbar.

The Runner-Up: The runner up receives a signature, and a sigbar.

There are unlimited tileset makers, but only 32 speedrunning spots, so hurry!

FAQ

Q. How much time will there be between rounds, a week?
A. Yes, about a week.

Q. Maybe I just missed it in your post, but when are tiles due?
A. The unofficial limit is a month at the moment.

Q. How will competitors be eliminated each round?
A. The amount of competitors will be halved each round.

Q. What will you do if you don't get 32 speedrunners in?
A. I'll eliminate as much as it takes to get to 16, then half from there. Like if we have 28 competitors, a certain amount will get eliminated to 16 (12 will be eliminated). Then, we will continue with the halving system.

Q. Wait, hang on. Do we make an entire map and are graded on the tiles only, or just tiles?
A. You aren't to make an entire map. You just have to make a tileset, with one exit and one ninja, and have it be possible to get to the exit.

Q. Do we as tilemakers decide where the exit is?
A. Yup, everything is decided by you, which includes the tiles, ninja, and exit. But, there may only be a tileset, ninja, and exit.

Q. Is this the sequel to the TWNS-contest?
A. Only if you want it to be. =)

Q. When the maps, which we will speedrun, are submitted, we are NOT allowed to play them in any mode (speedrun, highscore, over/underclock)?
A. No, you have to post them in speedrun mod in NReality, but not anywhere else, if that makes sense. =)

Q. So are we allowed to play maps in advantage in an other mode than speedrun?
A. Yes, you are allowed to play in advantage in other modes. Thew more you practice, the better. But you won't know what tilesets will be picked, so you'll have to get pretty lucky. :evil laugh:

Q. Does the contest automatically starts after 32 runners have arrived, or when you say it starts?
A. It automatically once 32 speedrunners show up, or if this has been on hold too long.

Q. Are multiple exits allowed?
A. Nah. Just one exit.

Q. Are locked doors all-
A. No.

Q. Are gold, mines, and enemies allo-
A. No. Nothing else besides the exit, ninja, and tileset.

Q. How do we make sure you see our maps? Will it be with a special tag on NUMA? Or post the data here or something?
A. Oh yes, this is very important.

That's it! Please post here if you see any flaws or holes in the competition. Although the tileset round has started, you may still sign up for both parts of the competition if you would like. I also really need another judge, but you will have to have a bit of experience, and I'd like you to be able to keep up with the competition itself. I also still need a Signature maker guys, and I'd really like if you would help me with this. Please people, help out!

There isn't a limit for tileset makers. However, we need exactly 32 speedrunners.

Then I'm screwed for life.

We have to get in a lot, but 32 is the maximum, unless we can get 64, which is totally unrealistic I believe.

Why 32? 2x2=4 4x2=8 8x2=16 16x2=32

So...

32 halved, like the competition will go, is 16, halved is 8, halved is 4, halved is 2.

In comparision.

32/2/2/2/2/2=1::32 competitors cut in half to leave 16. cut in half to leave 8, cut in half to leave the semifinalists, cut in half to leave the finalists, cut in half to leave the champion, who will face me, even if I lose. Err...scratch that. But you guys knew that already. [/useless rant][/unfunny joke]

So yeah, I'll eliminate as much as it takes to get to 16, then half from there. Like if we have 28 competitors, 12 will be eliminated. Then, we will continue with the halving system.
