Highscore Rankings Through History

The Highscore Rankings have become a long lasting tradition and a great way to inspire competition among players. Unfortunately, the rankings are quite spread out and many of them can only be found on the old forums. Having been around for a while I was interested to see my progress over the years. To that end I began compiling a master list and now that it's finished I would like to share it with you.

v1.1 (small update)
- Only Total 0th Rankings are represented (level and episode 0ths as well as tied 0ths are counted)
- Tables have been copied verbatim (Any rankings that list proven or suspected cheaters are counted unless otherwise stated)
- Rankings 1 - 112 are included
- Special Ranking #61 included that shows Lim reaching 201 0ths

Later versions may include Top 20 Rankings
If you would like to see this implemented say so

And finally, if you find any mistakes please let me know!

Wow! This is an amazing resource for all highscorers, past present and future. I can see this being especially useful with the N highscores wiki and is an easy way to track my own progress. What will be more telling personally, is my positive and negative fluctuation of top-20s over the years. Some more things that interest me is Trib4lmaniac's resistance to johnny_faneca - I didn't realise that they had been fighting over the 0th lead from November 2005 to February, 2006. I realise this doesn't seem like a long time in the overall scheme of things but I can't remember a battle for 0th and 1st being so intense. Also, I'm impressed by Seifer's peak of 59 0ths and how he was able to sustain a top 10 0ths ranking for so long. My first top 10 0th position was the same week as zapkt's only top 10 position in the 0ths chart.

Hmm what else.. oh yeah.. and seeing that my current ranking of 5th is the highest I've been since a year ago (September 2009) with the highest being 4th was pretty cool. Also, my 16th 0th is my personal record which is cool since I had 15 way back in December 2008 ;D. One thing I don't get is
Seifer wrote:If you were to sum up all the 0ths ever held by a player it would look something like this:
xaelar 11936
Mr_Lim 6259
trib4lmaniac 5622
johnny_faneca 5375
vankuss 2838
spect 2350
lookatthis 2332
Seifer 1907
eru_bahagon 1663
naem 1340
glupi_zmaj 1288
blobglob 1144
clux 1135
jg9000 936
pokemaniac1342 875
tktktk 688
Ben_Schultz_11 632
I know for a fact I haven't taken anywhere near 632 0ths in my career lol. Does this mean say 23 people have held the 0th on 18-0 for example and I take the 0th I get 18 added to my total? or how does that work? anyway, it's great stuff and I'm looking forward to the Top-20 addition :)

I'm glad you like it!

To answer your question, basically what I did was add up your totals. So for example, say you made the top 10 list only twice in your career, the first time with 32 0ths and the second time with 14. I just added those numbers up so your total would be 46.

To be honest I was kind of running out of ideas for statistics.. I just thought this might be an interesting way to compare the players who have been on the boards many times but with a low number of 0ths (like me) and the players who have shot up the rankings only to fall off again just as quickly.

Really nice job.
I would like to see this thread made sticky.
I'll let top-20 rankings decision up to you, I'm not particularly interested in that area (but I guess there will be a lot of people who want them).

Wow Seifer, thats awesome!, great job its amazing :O !!
This must be pinned no doubt, its incredible =D

Suggestion: Also, I dont know if this would be possible, but to do like the "Player Persistance" and the "Competition Most 0ths" sections, also in days, just because we now do the rankings each 7 days, but in 2004-2005-2006-2007 they were done like each 20 days, then 50 days, then 30 days, then 120 days, then 100 days (really) :O so the list in days would be much more acurate.

However I dont know much of Excel, so if you have to change something difficult, then of course dont do it, just a suggestion.

Very nice job Seifer.

Also, i've got a ranking which prove that Lim reached 200 0th at one time. It's an old .hs file. It happened between rankings 60 and 61 (December 2008).

If it'd be possible to add this rankings to the list, it'd nice. Lim deserve it. :)

However, this file is on my computer, at my apartment. I won't have access to it until September 20, 2010.

EDIT : a simpler way is to shift the rankings 60 (november 25) by a few days :)

Thats because there were 112 days between rankings 60 and 61! And there have been many more rankings with more than 100 days between them.
Just to put an example:
Image
And there are much more examples.

Thats why I have suggested to do that 2 sections ("Player Persistance" and "Competition") also in days, as well these we already have, because in days, these two sections would be much more accurate.

I wouldn't mind including that if you can post it here and as long as no one objects.

I'm not entirely sure I understand your meaning. Are you asking me to include a column for the "Competition" table that says how many days that player held the 0th spot. I can do that pretty easily. But I don't think I can do that for the Player Persistence table (which I spelled wrong lol). The reason for that is because for many players there are gaps between being on the lists and off..

so let's say someone was on the first 2 rankings which lasted 10 days.. then they dropped off for Ranking 3 and came back for ranking 4 but then never made the list again. How many days total would that be?

Yeah, thats what I meant =D
In that case, if can include a column for the "Competition" table in days, that'd be great.
Also, I've just realized what you've said about the Player Persistence table, I wouldnt know how to do it :)

Alright, it took some work but here you go: link

Unfortunately I couldn't import the complete excel file into google docs - I think it's because I did a few things in the original that google docs doesn't support. So I've copied over what I could. It won't be as good :p but at least it's something.

Also, should I allow anyone to be able to edit the doc or leave it as viewable only?

I would like it if you could include the stats for top-20 rankings also. Although I do like my 0ths ( :P ), my main focus is more on top-20s. Also, it would be fun to see how close anybody has ever gotten to top-20 perfection. I know that Hendor or Lim was at 598 at one point, and that was when ep 00 and 00-0 were ungettable anymore, but a perfect record of 600 top-20s would be awesome to see.

Yes, I think it's imperative to show that Lim did, in fact reach 200 0th scores as it is an important milestone and one worthy of recognition.

I think both were at 598 at one point, but 00 and 00-0 were still gettable (And they got them).
59-0 and 92-4 were the 2 they couldnt get.
If the boards were cleaned, it would be possible to go for the 600 top-20s, and I would love it.

PS: I've seen you've updated the rankings with the days, thanks Seifer ;D
Now I can see, for example, that Lim was 269 days in the Top Spot, but only 5 rankings.

Yes, thank you, you were absolutely right in suggesting I add that column.

So far only the google doc has that info though, I will update the excel sheets when I have more things to include.

Seifer this is a great collection of history here. I am so glad you did this. The interactive graphs really show how much has happened in these past 5 years. It's good to see that all of this data won't be lost to time. We can now see the progression of highscores over the years. This truly show how long and by how much xela has been dominant since his rise with Lim.

Yeah, both Lim and Hendor have reached 598 missing 59-0 and 92-4 (kyrx hadn't discovered the current route yet, so people thought it was maxed.) At one point Brett_Sully had 600 top-20s but I think this was right after 1.4 came out and he was one of the first 20 people to beat the game. This probably means there were a few others with 600 as well, but this was before competition hit the boards. Now the most you can have is 597 if you are already on 59-0, but Seifer is the only active highscorer with a top-20 there. Everyone else could get 596 because of 00, 00-0, and 00-1 being locked out by hackers and 59-0 being maxed. 05-2 will most likely be the next map maxed out so tie the 0th while you can.

well, i'm back at home and found some precious old .hs file.

However, on the forums : "The extension hs is not allowed." I can send it via email.

I'll put data there :

2008-02-16 17:46:56

0 Mr_Lim - 201
1 xaelar - 160
2 lookatthis - 41
3 Johnny_faneca - 36
4 Bonzai - 18
5 clux - 16
6 Ben_Schultz_11 - 14
7 trib4lmaniac - 13
- Seifer - 13
9 blobglob - 9
- Wolfos - 9
11 Sp33dY - 8

I put the first 11 player to show i haven't ignore bonzai, sp33dy and poke (3 0th). People who weren't consider as cheater at that time.

With correct people ignored :

0 Mr_Lim - 210
1 xaelar - 166
2 lookatthis - 43
3 Johnny_faneca - 40
4 clux - 18
5 Seifer - 15
6 trib4lmaniac - 14
- Ben_Schultz_11 - 14
8 Wolfos - 10
9 blobglob - 9

Hmm, I knew that Lim went over 200, but I could never find where it happened. I am glad you still had that .hs because it seems that no one posted the rankings from the time Lim had 199 until he was back down to 198 again.
