One Hundred - It's *oeuvre*. Not that I really cared. :/

One Hundred
*Insert image here*
100 maps.
100 points per map.
100% competition.
Just 1 winner.
Welcome to One Hundred, the largest ever highscoring competition that has ever existed, in terms of the number of maps. The idea is straightforward. I will give you 100 numa maps. I will give you some amount of time ... 6 weeks? ... to highscore and speedrun them all. And at the end, I will give you points based on your performance on each map, a sliding scale that starts with 100 points for 0th and then goes down. Whoever has the most points (separately, in highscore and in speedrun, and overall) will earn the eternal glory of being crowned champion of One Hundred.

100 maps is no easy task. It's a test of endurance. You have to make sure your performance is up to speed on every map. It's no use just concentrating on a few maps and discarding the others. But then again, just getting bland completions on all the maps won't do too much good either. You have to strike the balance. You have to decide how much effort to put on each map so you get the best score possible.

The Format

Sign up by posting below. You should say whether you want to be in highscore or speedrun or both, and your highscore board name if it differs from your forum name. Signups close on Friday.

Once signups have closed, the 100 maps will be decided. By all of YOU. Yep, YOU get to decide the maps. What you have to do is PM me a list of some maps that you want competition on. The number of maps you get to choose will depend on how many people sign up, so there'll be 100 maps overall. There are going to be some restrictions, like the map can't have already been beaten to death by highscorers, but I'll tell you more about it when this competition gets going. But in deciding the maps this way, I won't have any more of an advantage than all you guys playing in this contest, so I might as well take part, if that's ok with you.

Then the competition starts. I post a list of all the 100 maps to highscore in this thread. They're probably not going to be resubmitted as protectedcontest because there are so many of them, but if someone wants to do that, then that's fine. Then you get some amount of time to highscore and/or speedrun them all. Probably 6 weeks, but I'll extend it if people want me to. That's it.

You get points for your ranking on each map - the scale will be decided once I have an idea of how many people are playing. But you get points for a completion and the number of points increases the better your performance, up to 100 points for 0th. The scale probably won't be too steep, so amateur highscorers might want to try their hand at this. (If they feel lucky...) I might also feel in the mood to give out bonus points every now and then, so watch this thread carefully.

Late signups will be accepted at any time, but you start with a small point penalty and you don't get to choose maps. And you don't get an extension.

And once the time is up, the winners of the highscore section, the speedrun section, and overall, will have the honour of being the Winners of One Hundred.

Poll results

Poll question: You're playing poker with a tiger. You have 10s 9d and the flop is 9s 10d Jc. You see that the tiger's tail is thrashing round violently - but just the tail. He seems to be completely unaware that his tail's doing it - it seems like an involuntary action. He places the minimum bet - what do you do?
Fold: 1
Call: 4
Raise: 5
Run screaming: 4

Scoring system has been proposed here. Incomplete list of maps is here. Deadline might be February 16th.

Edit: Contest over, for results see page 3, prizes sent out. Now I guess this thread will be left abandoned to die.

From what I experienced during BLUR 4, this isn't a good idea.
6 weeks is too long, 100 maps is too much. People will lose enthusiasm after 1 week, also there is no motivation (I mean, it's a new contest which people don't know, so it isn't really a 'prestige' to win it).
Don't know if you ever run any contest, but managing 1 map a week in BLUR 4 was enough for me, not 100 (!) of them. Seriously, it will cost you at least 10-20 hours to manage it.
Although I like the idea of doing something really big, I don't think this will work. If nothing else, there isn't any real highscoring activity.
(not in, if it wasn't clear)
Don't take it as I'm criticizing and bitching or something, I'm trying to help you get off the devil's path.

but that's the beauty of this competition i think.

Because it's so outlandishly long, only the people with real commitment would actually follow through. it's (as 999_springs stated) a test of endurance. Endurance is the key.

I'll take speedrun.

Hi. You people are going to own me, but I feel like entering speedrun. Also, I need to play N more again.

Not sure just how much commitment I'll be able to put in on this, but sign me up for both highscore and speedrun.

What Daik said. This is a test of endurance. We'll see how many people actually live up to it.

Code: Select all

import urllib
from datetime import datetime
listoflevels = # some list of level IDs
def f(x):
    # some way of working out the points

listofpeople = # list of whoever's doing it
fdfdfd = [[0, iuyuiy] for iuyuiy in listofpeople]
zxcvbnm = datetime.now()
for lkjklj in listoflevels:
    kjdfhk = urllib.urlopen('http://n.infunity.com/numa.php?mapID='+str(lkjklj))
    qerwer = kjdfhk.read()
    broccoli = [[qerwer.index(uiuoiu), uiuoiu] for uiuoiu in listofpeople if uiuoiu in qerwer]
    broccoli.sort()
    you = [lkj[1] for lkj in broccoli]
    for vcxzcv in you:
        hhggff = fdfdfd[listofpeople.index(vcxzcv)]
        hhggff[0] += f(you.index(vcxzcv))

fdfdfd.sort()
print fdfdfd
mnbvcxz = datetime.now()
print mnbvcxz-zxcvbnm
Test run for fbf's contest (6 maps) gives results in 15-20 seconds with 2.7GHz computer and quite fast internet connection. 100 maps should take 5 minutes.

just, :O

the only problem with handing it to 999_Springs I think is that the code will become indecipherable to everyone. I mean, look at his sample code. THOSE VARIABLE NAMES D:

Sorry but I can't help you here, thanks for the offer. I'm not a programmer. I know like a little bit of Python and I can do the maths to make things work, but that's it. I know nothing about Flash; if you want a detailed list of the programmers in this community it's here (read the thread, not just the first post). They're probably more suitable to your needs. Good luck.

I'm working on an project written in Flex (flash framework for building flash-web-applications) - it uses AS 3 (and MXML, but that's not important). I don't have any idea what is required for any NReality development, can you enlighten us / me?

Since you are one of those players who has the potential to beat some of the xaelar runs, handing NReality to you will ruin your highscores career as people will start to question whether your run is legit or not. Trust among top players are important... so I prefer handing NReality to a dedicated normal skilled nreality player than those Ninja Gods like you/xaelar ... sorry about that

I won't forgive you... just kidding, I get your point. However, dunno if there's any point in handing it, since 1.5 might come out (M&R didn't make a blog for a loooong time). It might be better to make a new NReality for 1.5 since I guess M&R won't include speedrun n' stuff.
Also an idea came to my mind, how hard would it be to actually code some kind of 'save states'? For demo building? Because when you pause the game, the game has to save the state of all objects somewhere, it shouldn't be that hard. Maybe the last thing to implement before you leave for good / give up NReality project? :)

Or maybe... Maybe I could just learn Flash in a few months starting from RIGHT NOW and get good at it. I was just told earlier this morning that I'm going to have to learn C or C++ by April (I know nothing.), I could also learn Flash at the same time.
