Inspiration Vacation!
Posted: 2013.01.22 (18:13)
Since the beginning of NUMA, many mappers have created interesting contests and projects with unique rules and guidelines, hoping to increase the creativity and involvement of fellow mappers. Some, like memoirs, vehemence or mapdraft are successful, but many others aren't. So what's the next big thing, you ask? Why, Inspiration Vacation, of course!
The idea for Inspiration Vacation came about during a conversation I had with RandomDigits about one such contest. I suggested another "round" of Moa. RandomDigits replied that Moa was a dumb idea, because Moa could not gather the "best maps of N", if maps needed to be specially created for it. In addition, Moa asked people to make the "best maps of all time" with no external inspiration or motivation. I think that RandomDigits put it nicely when he said that "he hates the maps he makes when there's nothing to try to wrap his style around."
Swayed by RandomDigits, I began to think of ways in which we could develop a fun and creative way for people to make awesome maps. Suddenly, I remembered a comment Traveleravi had left on one of my maps. Instead of text, his comment contained a picture. It clearly showed what the map reminded him of and what he thought of it. In many ways, the picture gave me a clearer understanding of his experience with my map than words ever could have. So then I thought, what if mappers were to make a map from a picture? This would give the mappers a flexible guideline. They could "wrap their styles" around it. Instead of a competition to determine the "best maps", it would be a challenge to create unique maps that convey the essence of the picture. It would be an exercise in artistic outlook and inspired thought. And so, Inspiration Vacation was born.
Rules (Important!):
Basic premise: In each "round", participating mappers will be asked to create a map that best represents the themes and motifs of the "Inspiration"- the thematic picture provided at the beginning of each round. By the end of the week, the maps should be submitted and judged. The winner will be selected by the judges.
-In each "round" there will be only two judges.
-Maps will be judged on two criteria:
1) How well does the map creatively and effectively encapsulate the motifs of the "Inspiration" --- 50%
2) How well does the map play in general? (Basically all the "normal criteria" that maps are usually judged on) --- 50%
-Each week, on Sunday, a new "round" will begin.
-The round begins with two steps:
1) A group of five mappers is revealed by the judges. These five mappers will be competing against each other in the
following week. In order to create non-biased groupings, the judges have to generate the groups randomly.
2) The newest judge will reveal an image he has selected to become the new "Inspiration"
-The five mappers selected will have the rest of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to map.
-At any point on Thursday, all five mappers will submit their maps to the judges. If a map is not submitted before 11:59 PM on that Thursday(based on the time zone of the newest judge), then the map is disqualified.
-On Friday and Saturday morning if necessary, the judges will play and review the maps (based on the criteria). They should be able to choose a winner by Saturday afternoon or so, in order to give the mappers a chance to see the results before the beginning of the next round on Sunday.
-The chosen winner of a round will become a new judge, removing the longest serving judge from his/her position. (This means that they get to choose the next "Inspiration")
-All the winning maps will be compiled into a mappack after this event has run its course.

Ok! So that's basically it!
If you want to participate, just PM me and say so, and I'll add your name to the list below!
The List
-On this list are the names of the mappers who want to be chosen to compete. If their names are blue, then they are currently participating. If their names are red, then they have already participated and will have to wait until ALL signed-up mappers have been chosen for competition, and then they will be eligible for selection again.
