Don't Shoot Yourself In The Foot: END! (Sorry For The Delay)
Posted: 2013.04.27 (21:44)
by ChrisE
PrologueHello. If you are reading this it's probably for one of three reasons.
a) You've seen the link somewhere, either on my NUMA map or on IRC and want to get involved.
b) You're really confused by the title and want more explanation.
c) You've seen my nick and gone HOLY SHIT CHRISE's BACK AND DOING A CONTEST I WANT IN ON THIS
Hopefully it's some combination of all three.
So, without further ado let me get down to business and defeat the Huns.
AboutIt's essentially a retiling/reobjecting competition. At the start of a round I will post a map that's been specially made. Your job will then be to either retile or reobject the map (depending on what takes your fancy).
But ChrisE! I hear you cry That sounds far too simple and surely there'll be lots of overlap between author's maps!
Well, ordinary citizen, that's what I thought. So I decided to add a little bonus. Each mapper will then take their retile or reobject and then do the reverse to it. So, if you retiled you will reobject your retile. If you reobjected you will retile your reobject. Got it? No?
1. ChrisE posts map
2. Entrant retiles map
3. Entrant makes a reobject of their retile
OR
1. ChrisE posts map
2. Entrant reobjects map
3. Entrant makes a retile of their reobject.
And if that doesn't help you then hopefully this will.
If it didn't, I'd recommend PM'ing me or not entering. Preferably the first one.
WHAT IS A RETILE/REOBJECT HELPA retile is a map in which you do not make any changes to the object placement. This includes the ninja, exit, key, switches, gold, mines, ANYTHING. For simplicity, I will allow objects to be partially hidden by tiles (see paste above) but they cannot be completely covered. I will find out and dock you points.
A reobject is the same, only you can't change the tiles. Anything else is fair game. You can't hide objects under tiles, though, that might make retiling too easy.
More InformationEach round will last ten days (to give people enough time to gather inspiration) and eliminations or similar will be altered according to entrants.
The two maps will then be submitted for judging. Yes. Both will be judged. So get your retile/reobject panties on and let's make some maps!
Maps will be judged as follows:
Gameplay /15
Aesthetics /5
Giving you a score out of twenty forty. Eighty. Forty. I realise that it's very hard to make even the worst tileset look good with objects, so I'll be looking more for how your maps play when judging. Sound fair?
Much Love.
ChrisE
I've changed the format slightly because I don't really like eliminations and lots of sign ups were busy and maybe this contest will go on for a long time with people dropping in and out SO what I have decided is that
every five rounds we will have a winner and the scores will be reset to zero. Sound fair? Good.
Please note that I will be using
the NUMA pastebin to judge maps. Feel free to post them on NUMA and link them in here, but please be aware that if you do that I'd like them to be tagged with
dsyitf, just so I can locate them easily. I may want to highscore them or something.
So, the contest is now over. So sorry for not being as prompt as I usually am, but I recently obtained a full time job so have next-to-no time to relax... Still, I have a day off today so I thought I would get my judging done.
LEADERBOARDscript: 29 + 38 + 34 + 32 + 32 = 165

vankuss: 20 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 20
frets: 17 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 17
Just so you know, if scores are tied, players are judged by their highest score.
Thanks to everybody who took part, and a big congratulations to Script for winning. A few of you have declared interest in a snake-like mapping contest similar to this one, where the highest scoring map is the base map for the next round - which is a good idea - but I will not have time to run the contest. Sorry.
I'll see you all soon, hopefully.

Which of my precious feet am I forbidden to shoot into? Left or right?

Sounds good. One question though: What if I don't have any feet; am I still allowed to compete?

If you don't have any feet then it'll be much easier for you to not shoot yourself in them, though I would watch out for arms, faces and other bodily extensions.

I noticed something thats strange about your contest Chris..
If we, the people competing, are posting a retiled and reobjected map, doesn't that mean we're just making whatever we want and posting it??
Because the two components of a map are tiles and objects.. and if ALL tiles and ALL objects are replaced, changed, or moved then that means it is a completely new map.

Blue_rocks, it doesn't mean that. If you choose to retile first, your final map has to have tiles that fit the objects of ChrisE's map. Also the vague areas of the map where ChrisE had objects should still have objects. If you choose to reobject first, your final map will have objects that fit ChrisE's map. And the vague areas of the map that were tiled should stay tiled. I say vague because the areas of ChrisE's map that don't have tiles or objects might end up having tiles or objects.
Hmmm, that explanation might be confusing... oh well.
Oh, and I will not be able to participate in the first round. :( Super busy at the moment.

I see, that is still fairly close to a completely new map though. I do like the idea though, it adds an element of connection between maps.
Count me in Chris!

The first and third maps in
this are maps I have made on NUMA. The one in the middle is a retile of the original; the final map is a reobject of the retile.
You could make any map you want, but that middle stage would be a massive risk.

Not only that blue_rocks.
If not much more in the whole creative process as a way and mapping experience. Something certainly unique and particular. Also in reality you will have two maps. Plus when you make a map normally you make it with total freedom in both cases, objects and tiles, and here no. You have limitations in methodology when creating. An while it's quite true that the final map will be something completely new, the process that brought you to it here it's certainly unique, which you will require a concrete steps, a concrete way of acting and some specific skills. In addition you have a decisive turning point when choosing whether first retile or reobject. That's why this process and this idea it's quite interesting.

Either. Some people aren't comfortable posting competition maps onto NUMA, so I will accept anything - so long as it has the link to the paste. That way I can tell if you've cheated much easier.
More details will be added on May 4th with the first update.

You should totally get someone to help judge if that hasn't already been suggested - that's a massive participant list

Yeah,
I can help with the judgement, ChrisE, if you don't mind. Actually, I would prefer to switch from participant to judge, if this could be possible?
Thank you.
