I start with 1.424 seconds of time left and I'm at the bottom and the only gold is at the top of the map. Wtf? Am I just blatantly missing something?

At the beginning of every episode, you start with 90 seconds. This gradually decreases as you go through the episode, and does not reset at the beginning of other levels within that episode.

That is, you have to collect enough gold in the earlier levels to be able to complete the entire episode. If it's physically impossible for you to get the gold at the top of the map, you're gonna have to restart the episode. :(
